Spain Builds an American Empire Aug 13, 1492, Columbus sails to the Americas Oct 12, 1492, he lands in the Americas Columbus named the Native Americans Indians He originally set sail for East Indies not the Americas He named the land San Salvador Sep 1493, Columbus sets sail again He had 17 boats with thousands of people on them 1500, Pedro Alvarez discovered Brazil The Spanish wanted to claim the Americas because of gold and other valuable things Spanish people also enslaved Native Americans usually for mining 1507, a German named the new world America after Amerigo Vespucci The Spanish brought their ideas into the Americas and cause cultural diffusion Hernando Cortez and other Spanish explorers after him were called conquistadors which meant conquerors Spanish male slave owners often raped Native American women America was fully conquered during the 16th century April 1542, Coronado discovers the Grand Canyon Coronado went all around the Americas in search of gold and silver
