Where does it come from?


The classical guitar
derives from 3 main stringed instruments.

Lute Vahuela Baroque Guitar

The classical guitar was a 19th century


development from Spain.

Very similar to the three aforementioned


instruments.

Known for its full and rich tone, along


with the ability to perform complex melodies.

Pioneered by musicians such as


Andrs Segovia in the 20th century and John Williams, who is still regarded as one of the finest classical guitarists in existence.

Steel-string Acoustic

A later development of the


Classical guitar.

Steel strings to produce a varied


sound.

Heavy duty feel. Larger than a


Classical guitar.

Prominent acoustic guitarists


include famous guitarists like Eric Clapton.

Unplugged - massive steel-string


album.

More unknown artists like John


Faney.

Electric

Guitars struggled to be heard. Massive race to perfect amplification. Les Paul experimenting with
microphones.

Adolph Rickenbacker and George


Beauchamp collaberated.

Guitar made available by 1932.

Solid bodied, usually wood. Features pickups. Most commercial instrument of


today.

The electric guitar has a massive


influence over modern music.

Most genres. Rock and Roll (Johnny Be Goode 1958)

Punk (God Save the Queen - 1977) Indie (Hummer - 2007)

Guitar brands
Guitar becomes commercialised. Fender Gibson

Fender
Leo Fender was an electronics repair
man, but built amplifiers and decided there was more money in that.

In 1965 Fender sold his company to


CBS for $13,000,000.

Fender
Fender started out by making the
Telecaster.

Branched out. Today has a


massive lineup.

Stratocaster is most
recognised.

Gibson Orville Gibson originally made


mandolins, he set up Gibson Guitar Corporation to sell these.

Les Paul was working on an


amplification method in the 1920s-30s.

They teamed up and the Les Paul was


released.

The Les Paul has become a signiature


look of the electric guitar today.
