Signs of the times

Some Torontonians were caught off guard this spring when a series of official looking signs started to appear in downtown neighbourhoods. Mark Daye, a 4th year graphic design student at the Ontario College of Arts and Design (OCAD) explains: Instead of rebranding a product or service for my 4th year thesis project I chose to represent a local population that usually gets overlooked. I re-coded official signage and affixed 30 of them to poles in the downtown core with messages pertaining to an obvious but ignored urban sub culture. The goal was not only to catch people off guard by creating signs that acknowledge the homeless population on a seemingly official level, but to get people to think about codes of behaviour, conformity, acceptance

and to maybe spare some consideration for the homeless who live mostly ignored in the city, blending into the background just like the signs. Recently, we met Wilma de Bruyn a political activist who wants to represent the NDP in the provincial Toronto Centre Riding and what a powerhouse with her business experience, her legal experience; she is a positive forthright breath of fresh air on social issues and provincial finances in general from social services that pull teeth instead of repairing them, from provincial governments that steer money to their friends for political favour she is a firebrand sorely needed in the City of Toronto and comes prepared with a range of experience arming her to tackle a broad range of very real issues facing Toronto today.

The Discovery Channel, however, was willing to break this silence and has covered the matter in their Best Evidence series in an episode entitled Chemical Contrails. The Discovery Channel website poses this question: Across the planet, millions of people have seen them - jet aircraft vapour trails lingering in the sky. Are these just regular contrails - the carbon and water vapour exhaust from commercial planes - or are they potentially toxic chemical trails emitted intentionally as part of secret geo-engineering experiments or weather-weaponization tests? According to award-winning Canadian journalist William Thomas, back in August 1997, the late Dr. Edward Teller presented a paper prepared by the US governments National Academy of Sciences to the 22nd International Seminar on Planetary Emergencies in Sicily, in which he suggested that: Increases in average world-wide temperature of the magnitude currently predicted can be cancelled by preventing about 1% of incoming solar radiation from reaching the Earth. Since debtors are always subservient to creditors they tend to accept the status quo without questioning the inner workings of the banking system. Permit me to clear this blatant misconception that banks lend their depositors savings. Banks do NOT lend out their depositors funds, they create and lend out brand new money. Graham Towers, a former Governor of the Bank of Canada, pointed out that: The banks do not lend out the money of their depositors. Each and every time a bank makes a loan, new bank credit is created, new deposits, brand new money. This money is created by the authority of the borrowers signature on the promissory note and is in turn issued by the bank. This new money for any loan or mortgage that is issued by the bank, is not fiat money since it is originally backed up by the collateral, assets or personal IOUs, pledged by the borrower at the time of the loan request. The other key question related to the creation and issuance of money is: Does the bank create the usury portion of the loan or mortgage being granted to the debtor? The direct answer is: No, banks never create the usury portion of any loan or mortgage. The usury portion of any loan or mortgage is the direct cause of the exponential growth of debt for individuals, businesses and governments. Our system of orthodox economics functions with the design flaw of usury under the jurisdiction of economists who commonly accept the fallacy that bankers lend their depositors savings and pay them a fee for doing so. It is sufficient to know that most businesses operate with bank loans and their usury costs are simply added to the retail price. Most economists also support the fallacy that usury fights inflation. The real truth is that usury causes inflation. Researchers have provided sufficient evidence to prove that bankers create the money supply when they make new loans. Producers, otherwise known as free enterprisers are forced to gamble by borrowing newly created principal to pay for production costs. To survive in the marketplace, these producers must then inflate their selling prices to cover their principal loan payments, plus the usury which was never created. Think about it! The total products and/or services which are priced to include the principal plus the usury can never be sold since consumers will not have enough dollars available. Therefore, a minimum amount of products and/or services will remain unsold and consequently a minimum number of producers will fail and experience foreclosure. As John The Engineer Turmel says: Just as there are insufficient chairs for all to survive the musical chairs death-gamble, so to, there is insufficient money for all to repay the principal plus the usury and survive the mortgage (deathgamble). John points out that the word mortgage is derived from the French words mort meaning death and gage meaning gamble. In summary, the odds of survival in any financial games where the function of usury is at play are always determined by the rate of usury. John also shows mathematically that the amount of foreclosures is proportional to the amount of collateral confiscated. Some say it's physical, as in big, muscular, and tough. In other words to some strength depends on wether one can beat another in fights or lifting heavy objects. Then there are thoses who believe one who does not cry or show any emotion, is showing strength. Therefore if a person holds back emotions and pretends to not feel or have emotional reactions is stonng. Many believe it's in ones faith. Of course in their own respects all of these examples are shows of strength. But are they or any combination of them true human strength in totality? Almost any body can become physically strong with proper exercise, food, and rest. As all of us know just how to hide our emotions and use them to manipulate and control. Anyone's faith works for them due to the belief, and can become stronger with nothing but that belief in whatever one believes their greater power is. Along with good morals and ethics, as well more time spent within thoughts of love, God and prayer, growth becomes strenght. Lets take a look at physical strength. Say I have always been able to clear a room upon getting into a fight or have been able to lift one hundred pounds of silver right off the floor, with one hand. This, most people, would look at as strong, and it is but this strenght is purly physical. Even though I have huge strong mussels and a real mean punch, how easily do I get angered or frustrated? So I have mental strenght enough to control this physical strenght? Many people I have met with great mussels shape and strength, also have strong tempers, are easily frustrated and show little or no emotional balance. What if I am short tempered, highly emotional, and get out of control at the drop of a dime, but can kick the hell out of five guys at once. Am I balancd within my strenght, or jsut physically strong? Then take the person who shows no tears, anger, or any emotions. After a while of this type of emotional behaviour leads to not caring and then heartlessness. We have found that people who close or hide their emotions from themselves also close emotionally to all of humanity. These people will eventually become incapable of feeling anyone elses tears along with their own. Then how strong is it to only take what you want, and throw away the rest because it makes you frustrated, sad or angry, and you dont want anyone to know you are so weak that you react to emotional experiences. Is that not what an emotionless person is doing? Is being separated emotionally from all others, {which renders one dis-compasionate}, a true sign of strength? Now the person with such faith but hides

where they can do the least amount or no harm to others. There were many question asked at a community meeting last week. Are the Dixon Hall people able to truly answer them to the communitys satisfaction? Questions like: 1. Is the staff at this facility, going to make sure that these men do not drink Listerine and Cheep Wines in paper bags, in the parks or on Danforth Avenue itself? 2. Are these staff members going to make sure that the pimps and drug dealers do not accost the community folk? 3. Knowing the state of the mentality of the homeless, are our children and women safe on the street at all with this situation happening? 4. What kind of permanent help are these men actually getting. 5. Who is going to take the responsibility for a child or woman, from the community getting attacked, molested or worse if it does happen?
Just to put forth a few, and there were many more. I believe that we need homeless shelters but, where we put them is ultimately important, as well as seeing to it, that they offer what these people truly need as well as shelter. In the past our shelters have offered merely shelter and bare necessities, which was good, when we had no real solutions to the problem, but now that we know so much more about the reasons for homelessness, the abuses that made the situation so huge, and we do have information, care therapy and guidance to help heal the damage done, we need to reconstruct them all. We have all learned by now, that if one is abused and does not get proper care, therapy and guidance to heal from that abuse they --- WILL -- re-abuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the reason that many of our street people are continually in and out of jail for drugs, alcohol, violent offences and assault charges. Also it is the reason that many homeless people are referred to as crazy, insane, and disturbed. An abuse victims reality, thinking patterns, and overall mental state is damaged severely due to the abuses endured. These problems must be attended to before any abuse victim can truly live within our family communities without hurting themselves and others. In this light putting a Mens Hostel within a community of young children is completely ridiculous. Due to their emotional illnesses, these men could very well abuse some of the community children along with themselves as they are highly self destructive. As well as that, I am sure that families walking down Danforth Avenue together on a Sunday afternoon, do not wish to see a few hundred men staggering down the street, or sitting in the park drinking Listerine or cheep Wine from a bottle in a bag. Yes children do need to learn about these

things sometime during their lives, but not as young children and babies and not on an every day consistent level. ----------------------------------------------

personality, with little ego and few senseless attachments, is best able to defend against this, but this is exactly what enrages the psycho-bully. Studies of psychological bullying show that it is impossible for any one to defend against a gang up or mobbing by psychobullies. Even the target who tries to flee the situation is often pursued. The only thing that stops this behaviour is for it to be forbidden by those the psycho-bullies dare not defy; those with enough power, or the great majority of the onlookers to the bullying. A discussion of the whys, and the tactics, of psycho-bully attack and of defence from it, is worth a few articles. Here we are looking at a single example of how this behaviour is used as a means of social control. the smiling Buddha Call her K. She has been a peace activist for a long time. She once dealt directly with prime minister Trudeau about nuclear disarmament. In the early 1980s she was actually nominated for a nobel prize. She talks little about it, but she has achieved much for the local Buddhist community and for various progressive causes in Toronto. She is also a Buddhist minister. She is not of Asian descent. Because of all this, she has over the years been subjected to the usual sorts of ignorance and spitefulness. Only in the past few years has she run afoul of some really vicious people who really to want to destroy her. They have had her in jail for most of the last two years. She has never found out exactly what is being alleged against her. Her freinds did not know what had happened to her, or were afraid to do anything to help her. The local Buddhist community is apparently paralysed with fear of the Toronto police. The details of this story are vague, not because anything about her story does not add up, given what we know about how the police and courts really work. It is hard to know what to say that does not risk putting her back in jail. The system keeps its victims isolated and terrorized. the story The person at the root of Ks problem is Dave Meslin. He is a founder of the public space committee in Toronto. He is responsible for the tacky city idol contest prior to the last civic election. K came into contact with Meslin and some associates of his when she was involved with a guerilla gardening group. Despite the dramatic title, this was about planting flowers in unused plots of ground around the city. Meslin was rejected in some sort of sexual advance to K. He then started a classic mobbing campaign against her. She was followed home and her windows smashed. This lead to her eviction. Strongly glued posters were put up around her neighbourhood with her picture retouched to make her look sinister. These posters warned people that she was a dangerous person and people should call the police if she harassed them. When she tried to defend herself by publicising the harassment, demanding that it cease, and that people take a stand about it, she got blocked from various internet forums. People began refusing to talk to her. It seems her very attempts to defend herself from slander and harassment were used to justify the next step against her; to arrest her for harassment. The psycho-bullys power is to turn everything upside down and inside out. the injustice system The cops arrested her at her home. She was hustled in front of some aged crank judge who kept her locked up for two years. He has now retired. K was given no chance to get a lawyer, though a lawyer does not usually do much good. She was given no chance to get her side of the story across. There was no effort to even create some conditions under which she could be released on bail. The aim was to keep her in jail until she was broken and destroyed. She described one hearing where some evidence was brought to justify keeping her. Meslin claimed he was afraid of her for his life. K is a small and thin woman. It was alleged she is insane and is not actually a Buddhist or a minister and there is no temple where she claims there is one.

Some police meat heads finally had the idea of going and seeing if there was a Buddhist temple there. They found there was and K was a member of a religious community there. This did not cause them to revaluate why they were holding K. While in jail, K refused to eat prison food, but demanded her Buddhist vegetarian diet. She ate very little for four months, endangering her life. Some of the prison guards stood up for her, risking their own jobs. You are not a criminal they said, so why are you in here? K was let out for awhile and then arrested again. Since she has been on the street again the harassment has continued. Meslins cronies have approached her and claimed that she is following them. They told her they want her to die in jail. Recently the police pounded on her door at midnight; the same cop, Torkey, who seems to have been co-ordinating this persecution for two years. standing up Most people would be completely destroyed by this kind of experience. I have talked with people connected to the mental health system who say a good number of cases of mental breakdown in Toronto are from police harassment. It seems Ks religious beliefs, and the mental discipline and objectivity taught by Buddhism have got her through this so far. But how much crap does one person have to live through? Ks situation is not an isolated incident. It is not a mistake. Meslin and the other people involved are not even very adept at persecuting her. A minimally competent police force would have at least charged them under section 140 of the criminal code, dealing with making spurious charges against people. This persecution of K is being organised by the police. They are going to keep after her until she has a heart attack or nervous breakdown. Or, until further harassment is forbidden. This means, by people beginning to stand up with K and refuse to let her be isolated. Only when there is a strong network of people willing to shield victims of policeorganised black-bagging will there be effective social movements in the city.

Police in Canada can put almost anyone in jail for months or years without evidence. It is because people can not believe it that the black bag is such a powerful tool of social control. The last article I wrote asserted that we in Toronto are living under a subtle type of police state, which makes any form of social activism ineffective. Its power is in that nobody sees it as what it is. They just see infighting between groups and individuals, and frequent police mistakes. People decide that all activists are assholes and despair of ever forming effective movements. What needs to be asked is how the assholes always seem to get whatever funding and support is available and do nothing with it, while good people with good ideas get no support. And, why the cops are so consistently interested only in the assholes side of the story.
There are more scientific terms for all these assholes; antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. The term psychological bully or psycho-bully best describes what they are and what they do. It is very hard for most people to deal with psychological bullying from somebody with no conscience, who is willing to do anything to reduce their target to a state of helplessness before eliminating them. The city government of Toronto is contracting a private firm to supply and maintain the citys street furniture in exchange for the right to rent advertising space on them. Opponents are mainly focused on advertising as such, rather than on this antidemocratic process.
One aspect of Torontos the financial crunch has been the panicked ideas for raising new revenues or sloughing off costs. There is no shortage of opportunistic business concerns exploiting this panic, or politicians and bureaucrats to front for them. Among the more brazen of these opportunists are the advertising industry. The ineffectual hysterics of their public space opponents makes for amusing political buffoonery. What is not amusing is that we will be stuck with these Ad biz monstrosities all over the city for a long time. But there is no public will to do anything serious about it. There is nothing wrong with moderate advertising. And Toronto was not Paris by Lake Ontario before the ad salesmen showed up. It is a drab, brown and grey city. There is an obvious solution for the problem of regulating public advertising. some useful information, resistance to them declined. There is not much to look at in a subway tunnel; a little advertising actually brightens the scene. The city bureaucracy has the idea that if the city got advertising companies to pay for the citys street furniture, then the city could get free benches, garbage cans, and bus shelters, and have someone else handle the maintenance. It could collect a little money from the advertising sales. There has been great resistance to the new garbage cans but we got them anyway. They are sunk into the concrete, poorly made, and designed to be billboards rather than trash receptacles. The collection doors keep falling open into the roadway, creating a great hazard. Next we got the megabin, fortunately only as a test. They blocked the view completely and were useless as trash receptacles. The test is over and the megabins are gone. But the ad biz keeps rolling onward. Now we have trucks that roll around the congested downtown all day, making nitrous oxide and distracting drivers with advertising. The city bureaucracy recently announced the results of a design competition and recommended one companys ad space cum bicycle posts and newspaper boxes over the others. The public had little chance time to respond before it was rammed through the executive committee. The options are laid out as a choice of company A, B, or C, all with very similar designs. There is no option presented for managing public space in a different way. nothing better to see. It must be regulated. This is why ads facing the roadway, and ads on buses or on billboard trucks, are bad; they distract drivers. There are so many entities wanting to communicate a message and a very limited amount of media through which to communicate. Crowding destroys the effectiveness of all advertising. There are only so many clean ad spaces around. An ad does not look good, and is not very effective, when it is half hidden behind a tree, or another advertisement. Sometimes advertising is poorly done or in poor taste, but there is not that much of it; ad companies carefully monitor the effectiveness of their ads. The ad business would be better if there was some independent regulating mechanism. street and transit advertising and public furniture corporation in the same way it incorporates a housing corporation or a utilities corporation. If it is not able to do this, possibly due to provincial antimunicipalism, it must be made able to do it. Shall we call it TSTAPFC? It should have a monopoly over all advertising or artistic display in public places. It would have the money to enforce its monopoly. It would design whatever public furniture is needed, using public consultative planning methods to adapt everything to local needs and pattern languages. It may intersperse paid advertising with work contributed by local artists. It would be the censor of all this brilliant effort. No doubt, also the object of invective for what it allows as well as what it refuses. It would allow advertising put keep it reined in, and keep more objectionable forms out. It could buy and maintain public furniture out of advertising revenue, and probably still return a p ro f i t t o t h e ci ty t reas u r y. It would maintain whacking big bulletin boards wherever people want them. It would have resources to track down people who are abusing these boards, or posting notices in inappropriate places, and force them to desist. It could even operate the network of public pay toilets which are in each companys proposal, and which would make Toronto a much more livable and civilised cit y. This takes getting rid of the idea that nothing can be done in the city unless a private company can make money off it. It is the public which should make the money from the use of public space. This takes the citizens of the city finally taking control of their city government back. That is not happening any time soon.

other arguments
Another result of disorganised city government is that there is nobody to enforce sign laws. Illegal signs and billboards are proliferating. The citys artists want spaces in which to inflict their masterpieces upon us. Graffiti artists are the most obnoxious about this, howling about freedom of expression. People want to put up posters. Posters can get excessive. The citys efforts to ban or restrict posters keep getting shot down by the courts, because it tries to simply ban, rather than regulate. A problem with posters is that many, even most, of them are for commercial concerns. There are companies that put up posters for pay, who are known to interfere with people trying to advertise community events. Public space must be public, but it cannot be free. There must be some system of regulating it for the public good. This would make practical public bulletin boards on each block, which many voices have called for.

ad wars
The ad biz has exploited the concentration of power in the mayor and executive council, and the disempowerment of the citizens, to muscle their way into public space. It is being called the great sidewalk sale or the selloff of public space. In the transit system, there have always been ads above the inside windows of buses and along the sides, and billboards along the subway platforms. There has long been advertising on benches and bus shelters. There has long been resistance to large American style billboards. Resistance to the big video billboards is even more hysterical. Resistance increased when they started painting whole city busses, and installing video screens on the subway platforms. The painted busses looked ridiculous. But after the monster screens were downsized and included

Most people are not bothered by moderate advertising. They would rather see a brightly coloured advertisement in front of them than a bare, grey wall. Advertising does fill a social and economic function. You might notice that much advertising is better done and more pleasing than the dreck that goes around it. Murray Dobbins latest: Today's Topics: 1. SES Poll - most reliable (Murray Dobbin) Dear friends... This is the poll I have been waiting for to tell us what is really happening in federal politics. I follow all the polls all the time and some are much more reliable than others. Some I don't trust at all - specifically Strategic Counsel by pollster Allan Greg. Greg has his own agenda and played a key role in the '88 election of Brian Mulroney. He recently did a poll immediately after the Harper budget - something most pollsters don't do because they know that people change their views once they have time to digest a budget (this poll showed Harper in majority territory which no other poll has done). The SES polling is consistently the most accurate and in the last election its predicted vote was virtually identical to the actual vote. She argued that the idea followed the language, not the language following the idea. Further, others have postulated that and idea cannot be completed without being articulated. The two really follow each other. A person has a vague notion or thought; the person uses or invents a word for the notion or thought, and the thought becomes a fully existing idea. The State of Israel was founded on the premise of Never again, where Jewish men and women would never be subjected to the type of bigotry and persecution that led to the Holocaust in World War Two. Ironically, the type of mindset that led to that particular holocaust is no longer bigoted and the activities are no longer counted as persecution. These are described under the blanket term Anti-Semitism. The world has come to accept that bigotry and racism are wrong; they are the product of trailer parks and backwoods redneck enclaves. The deaths of millions of blacks in slavery embarrasses whites to the point that they are willing to forgo any and all negative emotion based on race and give people the benefit of the doubt. Anti-Semitism is different. A new word, after all, creates a different frame of mind It describes this thing differently from racism. The need for the invention of a word suggests that an Anti-Semite is NOT a racist. And AntiSemites are NOT bigots. An Anti-Semite is an AntiSemite. Even the terms themselves are irrational. People that are homophobic arent really afraid of homosexuals, as the term suggests. Nor do Anti-Semites hate all Semitic people; in the broader sense, Palestinians and other Arabs are included under that term.
