Committee: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Topic: Strengthening a Coordinated Emergency Response to Humanitarian and Natural

Disasters Country: Republic of Cte dIvoire Delegate: Samir Nadim Ghobril Floods, droughts, epidemics, earthquakes, hurricanes. These are just a few examples of natural disasters that could cause discord and instability in countries all over the world. Without proper rapid response to such events, Cte dIvoire believes countries affected by such disasters would suffer greatly. In 30 years, the Republic of Cte dIvoire has witnessed over 20 natural disasters, and is persisting to finally reach a promising solution that guarantees the proper response to both natural and humanitarian disasters. Cte dIvoire has suffered many misfortunes recently, mainly humanitarian ones. The army, guided by Soumaila Bakayoko, has proven to be a great advantage to the crisis. Peacekeeping troops have been spread out all across the nation, and have been working hard to provide people in need with the shelter, protection, and nutrition they so desperately require. Cte dIvoire has also suffered from many floods in the past years, and was hit by a flood very recently in 2011, which threatened about 27646 people, and would have led the country to complete chaos if it werent for the fast response teams such as the Red Cross. NEED MORE NATIONAL ACTIONS/NGOS? Worldwide response teams are vital for the development of third world countries. Cte dIvoire has great collaborated with both Merlin, a response team founded in Britain, as well as the country of Liberia, during severe medical crises. Another agency that has been involved in providing nutrition to Ivorians in need is the MSF or Mdecins Sans Frontire, who have aided citizens in need during the war and other such disasters. There have also been many contributions with the ICMRT (Ivory Coast Medical Relief Team), which was founded in the US and provides Cte dIvoire with a huge amount of medical supplies and medical assistance. To say that worldwide response teams are at their best would be a lie to ourselves, and to our citizens as well. The world today still witnesses countless problems, be them humanitarian or natural. Nations need to work hand in hand to finally reach a better, less worrisome, more peaceful world. First world countries should invest in forming international emergency response teams and providing less developed countries with the required resources for their survival. Developing countries should also work on forming their own response team, for every countrys main duty is providing its people with aid and security.
