(a) For u = (x1 , x2 , x3 ) and v = (y1 , y2 , y3 ) in R3 , dene (i) the scalar product u v of u and v; (ii) the norm u of u; (iii) the vector product u v of u and v. 2. In R3 , let (a) be the line through the point P = (4, 1, 2) in the direction u = (1, 1, 3). (b) be the plane through the point Q = (1, 1, 1) with a normal vector n = (3, 1, 1). Find (i) the vector equation of the line ; (ii) the vector and cartesian equations of the plane ; (iii) the point P that is the intersection of the line and the plane . [4] [8] [8]

MATHEMATICS: GEOMETRY (a) Dene what is meant by saying that the three vectors u, v, w in R3 are linearly dependent. [5] (b) If u = (x1 , x2 , x3 ), v = (y1 , y2 , y3 ), w = (z1 , z2 , z3 ), express in terms of a determinant the condition that u, v, w are linearly dependent. (a) Dene what is meant by the complex conjugate z of a complex number z. (b) Express the complex number w = 3 + i in the form rei . (c) Show approximately w and w on the Argand Diagram. (d) Use (ii) to evaluate ( 3 + i)7 + ( 3 i)7 .

(a) Dene what is meant by a conic in R2 .

(b) Write down canonical forms for the four dierent types of irreducible conics, and sketch them. [6] (c) If P is any point on a parabola P with focus P0 , and T is the point where the tangent at P meets the axis, show that P0 P = P0 T . [10]
