Issue 11, August 3rd, 2012

From the Principal - Fiona Kelly As this is the first newsletter for the term I feel the need to say Welcome back to term 3, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. It does however feel like we have been back for a lot longer than two weeks! You may have noticed a big flurry of activity followed by a visit from a film crew yesterday. This was the ABC. On tonights episode of 7.30 WA there is a report about schooling in Western Australia and we were asked by the media unit of the Department if we would allow some filming here at our school. This of course was a great publicity opportunity for our school, except for the fact that the front of the school is a building site and the lawns at the back had turned to mush from over use! In a bit of a panic I phoned a friend who just happens to be co-director of GREENACRES TURF FARM. As you can see Peter saved the day and had his contractors here within hours of my call providing us with new lawn at an amazingly generous mates rate. It was also Greenacres that provided the lovely lawn up the back of the school that the kids all love. An interesting twist to the media report is the fact that the Independent Public School initiative is being discussed. Unfortunately in the recent round of offers North Fremantle Primary school was not successful. Although disappointed that we missed out (48 of 141 schools were selected) I have had some initial feedback that we were very competitive and should definitely apply again next round. I will receive more details at a feedback meeting next week and work with our school council to prepare for next time. Now for a few reminders: BURSWOOD CONCERT: Its this Monday night. Please purchase a long sleeved black bird shirt for the performance. Students need to be at Burswood by 6:30pm. All details are in the information note sent home by Mrs Branch. WHOLE SCHOOL PHOTO: We are having a whole school photo taken next Tuesday morning. This photo will feature in the cookbook the P&C is publishing later this term. Could all students please wear school uniform any one of our range will do! ACTIVITY CHARGE: This charge covers all excursions and incursions for the semester. This includes swimming later in the year. In a couple of weeks time we are having an external financial audit. It would be fantastic if we could have all outstanding monies paid as soon as possible. Thanks for your support. FUN RUN: Come and cheer on the kids its this Wednesday morning at 9am. PLEASE CLOSE THE GATE : The story on page 3 of today's West Australian is a timely reminder as to why we need to keep the Junior primary area gate shut. Please ask your children not to climb the gate.

Room 1 - Lisa Miller Welcome back everyone! From the chatter in our classroom it sounds like everyone has had very enjoyable holidays and the children have come back to Kindy eager and ready to tackle three days per week. Last week we started talking about the Olympic Games. Some of the busy activities we have done have been collaging the 5 Olympic rings and doing paintings using the Olympic colours of red, black, green, yellow and blue. This week we learnt all about

Room 2 - Liz Smith Thank you once again to the P&C for funding six iPads for our school. The children in Pre Primary have begun exploring apps that will support their learning, we took the iPads on a walk around school using the camera app.

Room 3 - Bev Lane This week the children in room 3 have been making wanted posters about themselves. They had to write descriptions of themselves including measuring their height and writing their full names, address and phone numbers. Then they had to think of a crime to commit! Jordeys crime was being to be too cute. Parents should have received new spelling folders by now and home readers if requested. Please come and see me or send a note if its all too confusing. Room 4 - Claire Henneberry We have had a wonderful start to term three; it is great to see everyone fresh and ready for another term. We have been learning about The 2012 London Olympics and we have even designed our own Olympic Torch and Australian Uniform they look great! As the Fun Run is getting closer, we have also been practicing our running and it is great to see that everyone is trying really hard to improve their fitness levels!

Room 5 - Monica Parkes/Leanne Vinci We have had a great start to Term 3 and are looking forward to a busy term. In Literacy we have began our new novels for 4 Roles of the Reader and are preparing to write a report on the Olympic Games. This semester in Science, we will be focusing on Chemical Sciences. We have been discussing the properties of the states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) and the movement of the particles within each state. Today in collaborative groups the students designed a science investigation to discover if the states of matter can be changed. Stay tuned for the results of our investigations! Silent card shuffle has been the collaborative strategy we have used when reviewing and learning our new maths topics. Not speaking is the hardest part of this strategy. Using a KWL has helped us review the terminology we know and want to know. Drama - Jill Rickers Rm 3 have script called Priscilla and are learning about scenes. So far we have some fierce dragons. Rm 4 are learning about middle eastern culture as we act out an Aladdin and magic carpet theme. Rm 5 have been working on their persuasive speech by auctioning off their partner.

Art - Margie Campbell NAIDOC WEEK The last week of term allowed the students of NFPS to work again with Aboriginal Choreographer Simon Stewart. He worked with each class every day discussing dance moves, explaining the origins of the moves and some history of the people and places that these dances originated from. Once again the children were captivated by his stories and dancing. It was wonderful to watch the children perform at our special NAIDOC week assembly. Following the assembly the students mixed across the age groups and participated in a rotation of activities ranging from clay work and boomerang painting to sport. It was really lovely to see the older students embrace their responsibilities, and caring for the younger students assisting and directing them with the tasks given. The focus was on the recognition of the symbols used in traditional and contemporary Indigenous painting and for students to make their own stories using these icons. Thank you to Nicole for making the Pre-Primary headbands, Simon and Sarah and the other parents who came along to the classes and provided support. Art Well having finished second term on an Arts high, we have followed up with some Aboriginal artwork. Looking at how different Indigenous artists use colour and blocks of colour in their stories which depict icons to tell stories. The stories and colours chosen by the students were very impressive. Term 3 clay work Clay is now our focus for term three and all classes have started. Our focus is on useable art pieces, so pottery that students will be able to take home and use at home everyday. We will be completing the entire process of making, drying, firing, glazing and re-firing. This process will take some time, which is a lesson in patience as students who wish to take their soft clay bowl home on the same day are realising. It will be a wonderful experience for the students to learn how the whole process of pottery is created from the initial creation of a piece of work to the finished glazed product.

Councillors Report Music News Our amazing choir has been rehearsing to prepare for our performance on Monday night. We are all very excited and oozing with energy when singing. We hope our audience enjoys our performance. Well done to Room 4 and 5 for putting extra time to sparkle our performance at lunch times . Student Council This week our Year 7 students were lucky enough to receive their graduation t-shirts and jackets. The girls look fantastic and our proudly wearing their new gear. Thank you to the P and C for donating the tshirts and organising the printing.
