DAILY LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Unit Topic: Poetry Lesson Focus: "Bringing it all Together"-Analyzing Poetic Devices Standard/Benchmark: CE 3.2.1 Recognize a variety of literary genres and forms (e.g., poetry, drama, novels, short stories, autobiographies, biographies, multi-genre texts, satire, parody, allegory) and demonstrate an understanding of the way in which genre and form influence meaning. CE 3.2.2 Identify different types of poetry (e.g., epic, lyric, sonnet, free verse) and explain how specific features (e.g., figurative language, imagery, rhythm, alliteration, etc.) influence meaning. Motivation/Accessing Prior Knowledge (The Hook): Students will access prior knowledge and review material by sharing their thoughts on the poems they analyzed the night before for homework. (5 min.) Students will be told that the goal of todays activity is to understand how each of the literary devices we have studied work together to creating meaning and develop themes in poetry. (1 min.)

Learning Activities/Assessments* Students will be given a copy of the poem Digging by Seamus Heaney (1 min.) Students will read the poem aloud as a class, then discuss its meaning/theme and identify the shift. (Approx. 5 min.) Students will be placed into six groups to annotate a specific device at work in this poem (Approx. 10 min.): o Groups will be assigned one of the following: Rhythm and Rhyme, Symbolism, Diction and Tone, Imagery, Sound Devices, or Figurative Language o Each group will be given a copy of the poem on an overhead transparency o Groups should work together to identify how their literary device brings out the theme or meaning of the poem o As they discuss this, they should annotate the poem on the transparency Groups will take turns presenting their findings to the class, using the overhead to show the class their annotated poems. The class will stop to discuss key ideas. (Approx. 30 min.) Closure A brief, teacher led discussion will end the class period. Students will be reminded that the goal of this activity was to become more aware of how all of these devices work together to contribute to the meaning of a poem. (Approx. 3 min.)
