Frederick County Report
Terry Stanton says he makes the
best salsa in the Valley, and has the
award to prove it.
In fact, he does. Last year in Au-
gust, he won the Judges award for
the best non-professional salsa at
the 2011 Salsa Fest sponsored by
Winchester Parks and Recreation
and got 98 per cent of the peoples
vote.
He entered the contest at the en-
couragement one of his work bud-
dies who must have tasted and liked
the salsa, then began making and
selling it in quantity after winning
the award and seeing the response
of the fans who voted for it.
Had nobody who hasnt liked it
after tasting it, he said proudly.
People came back to the show
and wanted to buy salsa and I gave
away all that I had, he said. He also
gave away a generous sample to this
writer, and instantly created another
fan.
In October, the relocated River-
side, California native started pro-
ducing Dos Loco Gringos Salsa in
the USDA-inspected kitchen in the
back of the Bearly Believable Gift
store in Stephens City.
After the shop closes-and after
a long day as terminal manager at
Atlantic Bulk Carrier Corpora-
tion in Strasburg-on production
days, he puts on gloves, apron, hat,
goggles and a respirator, and starts
chopping and mixing the salsa. Te
raw peppers can burn the skin and,
Te fumes take your breath away,
said Chris Cregar, owner of the gift
shop.
Te recipe has an interesting his-
tory dating back 37 years ago to
Riverside, where he and his dad,
a former mess sergeant in the U.S.
Marines, had a catering business.
Te business got its name Dos
Loco Gringos (translated to mean
two crazy white guys) from an in-
cident that happened when he and
his dad were making salsa for one
of his dads friends who managed a
cantina. One day Terry was sitting
at the bar waiting for a vegetable
order delivery. Te bartender asked
him if he wanted some salsa and a
guy at the bar-obviously not a salsa
fan-said, You wont like it because
its true Mexican salsa.
When Terry walked back to the
kitchen and started chopping the in-
gredients for the salsa, the guy asked
him what he was doing. To the mans
astonishment, Terry told him, Im
making true Mexican salsa.
And when someone else said
Teres a crazy gringo back there
making salsa, my dad and I said we
must be two crazy white guys be-
cause we hand-chop everything.
Currently, since his father passed
away a few years back, he is a one-
man business.
I cant fnd anyone crazy enough
to help me. Now Im just one loco
gringo, he said with a chuckle.
Teres no secret to the recipe,
he said, because all the ingredients
are listed on the label, but he uses
the freshest ingredients he can fnd.
Te USDA says food must have a
shelf life of 45 days and I only keep it
for 30, so its always fresh, he said.
In fact, my business philosophy
is that I make the freshest I can ev-
ery time, he stated.
Flavor is the frst thing. In most
other salsas its the heat you taste
frst, but mine is favor frst and then
the heat comes on you, he said.
He uses three types of peppers-
Serrano, Habanera and Jalapeno,
plus tomatoes, garlic, lime juice, ci-
lantro, salt, pepper and sugar. Varia-
tions of heat range from Debutante,
which is very mild and graduate up
to Mild, Regular, Hot, and Extra
hot.
Te diference is in the amount
of peppers in the batch. Extra hot
has 130 peppers per a fve-gallon
batch, he said.
Every time he sets up, he uses new
samples because he wants people to
taste what they will be buying that
day.
Peppers change their heat. It var-
ies a bit and sometimes the Regular
tastes hotter than the Hot. But well
always have samples and chips to try
for free. Its better to try before buy-
ing, to see what the right heat is for
you, he said.
Future plans include adding Ghost
and Scorpion peppers to the basic
recipe to create more heat catego-
ries. Tese have Scoville heat ratings
so high that people will have to sign
a waiver if they want to eat them.
It will be basically the same rec-
ipe, as far as the favor, but Im not
sure how hot it will be, he said.
Terry doesnt claim to have a
Hispanic background, but said that
many local Hispanic people like his
salsa, and cites a quote from Ray L.
Gonzalez, who posted a recommen-
dation on Facebook.
It reads in part, I am a salsa fan.
I have tried all the store brands.
when Chris told me about Dos Loco
Gringos Salsa I said I will give it a
try. Well I did and I loved it. I love
the real spicy one because I love
spicy foods. If you are into salsa then
look no further because this is it!!!
He sets up at festivals all around
the area and he and several others
have created a small Farmers Mar-
ket outside the shop every Saturday
from 8 a.m. to noon.
Last Saturday we had 11 local
farmers and crafters. Weve created
a following, and have a bunch of loy-
al customers, he said.
He will be at the Pageant of
Steam Show in Berryville from July
27-29 and also at the Yellow Barn
event at Shenandoah Caverns in
Quicksburg in November.
To order larger amounts for par-
ties in one-half to fve gallon batch-
es, give him at least a weeks notice
and he can make more if needed.
Hell also make up special orders
for larger amounts, and will deliver
within a 30-mile radius.
He ofers membership in a Salsa
Club so members can buy 10 pints
and get the 11th one free.
Salsa can be purchased directly
at Bearly Believable gift store at 118
Elizabeth Dr., located in the Martins
Shopping Center near the Martins
gas station in Stephens City, and on
Saturdays in the parking lot at the
Farmers Market.

Te Leo M. Bernstein Awards,
afectionately known as the Leos,
were frst awarded in 2001 during
Wayside Teatres 40th Anniversary
Season. Te Board of Directors of
the Wayside Foundation for the Arts
nominates and bestows the Leos on
individuals who have performed re-
markable and outstanding service to
the arts in our community through
their eforts and contributions to
and on behalf of Wayside Teatre.
Without question the awardees from
the past 10 years are a distinguished
group of individuals.
As we open this play about love
and passion, it is appropriate that
the Board of Directors of the Way-
side Foundation for the Arts has
selected three individuals who have
demonstrated their passion for the
arts by their support of Wayside
Teatre. Each of these gentlemen
display, not only a love for Wayside
Teatre and what the arts can bring
to our community, but their actions
demonstrate the best of what being a
volunteer can mean to an organiza-
tion, a community, and to the arts.
Tey join a distinguished rank of
fellow awardees, and add even more
luster to this group of supporters
who have been so much a part of
Wayside Teatres history.
It is Waysides great pleasure to
announce and present this years Leo
Awards to the following individuals.

dia Services

Douglas Clay Arthur, Sr.
Doug Arthur is a veteran, runs a
law ofce in Strasburg, and is a long-
time supporter of Wayside Teatre
and the arts. Mr. Arthur served as
a Board Member at Wayside from
2004-2009 and again in 2011, and
spent much of that time as a mem-
ber of the Executive Committee.
His service extends to many other
organizations in our community: as
Town Attorney for Strasburg for 25
years, as a member of the Board of
Directors at Shentel, as Chairman
of the Board for First Bank, and as

Town Attorney for Mt. Jackson. His

support of the arts also goes beyond
Wayside: he plays a variety of musi-
cal instruments, including guitar,
bass, and ukulele, and has even done
so on the Wayside Teatre stage.
Additionally, Mr. Arthurs legal
expertise has been invaluable to
Wayside Teatre over the years.
He has a wife, Suzanne, children,
Clay and Sarah, and grandchildren
Hannah, Lydia, and Henry. Way-
side Teatre is grateful for Dougs
service, and to his family for their
support as well.

Papa Johns rated no. 1
Limited service restaurant. By American
customer satisfaction index,
With highest category score in survey history
Papa Johns score best among all companies in
June report, including airlines, express delivery and hotels
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 19, 2012) Papa Johns is tops in customer
satisfaction among limited-service restaurants, according to the 2012
American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) released today. Papa
Johns achieved the highest score ever by an individual brand in the
Limited Service Restaurant category, and it is the 11th time in the
past 13 years that Papa Johns has posted the highest score among
national pizza businesses.
A lot of people want to own quality, but it takes time and costs
money to own quality, said John Schnatter, Papa Johns Founder,
Chairman and Chief Executive Ofcer. For more than 27 years, Bet-
ter Ingredients. Better Pizza. has been the foundation of everything
we strive for as a company. Its this long-term commitment to quality
and providing our loyal customers with excellent service and superior
quality pizza that has driven our success. And we will continue apply-
ing these core principles throughout every facet of our business.
In addition to the top overall ACSI rating for limited-service
restaurants, Papa Johns score of 83 tied the highest rating in the Full
Service Restaurant category. Papa Johns also earned the highest score
regarding product quality, service quality and customer loyalty in the
individual ACSI ratings for pizza businesses.
We know our customers expectations are very high and our team
members work hard to deliver on those expectations including
investing in technology and providing pizza lovers with benefts not
found with our competitors, Schnatter said. We take great pride
in the ACSI ranking, and it is a real testament to our franchise and
corporate restaurant operators and team members, and their focus on
delivering a superior-quality product with excellent service.
Te ACSI ranking comes on the heels of the 2012 Harris Poll Eq-
uiTrend Study naming Papa Johns as its 2012 Pizza Brand of the Year
due to the companys quality and consumer preference for Papa Johns
pizza.
About Papa Johns
Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Papa Johns International,
Inc. (NASDAQ: PZZA) is the worlds third largest pizza company.
For 11 of the past 13 years, consumers have rated Papa Johns No. 1 in
customer satisfaction among all national pizza chains in the American
Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Papa Johns also was honored by
Restaurants & Institutions Magazine (R&I) with the 2009 Gold Award
for Consumers Choice in Chains in the pizza segment. Papa Johns is
the Ofcial Pizza Sponsor of the National Football League and Super
Bowl XLVI and XLVII. For more information about the company or
to order pizza online, visit Papa Johns at www.papajohns.com.
About ACSI
Te American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) is a national
economic indicator of customer evaluations of the quality of products
and services available to household consumers in the United States.
Te ACSI uses data from interviews with roughly 70,000 customers
annually as inputs to an econometric model for measuring customer
satisfaction with more than 225 companies in 47 industries and 10
economic sectors, as well as over 100 services, programs, and web-
sites of federal government agencies.
ACSI results are released on a monthly basis, with all measures re-
ported using a scale of 0 to 100. ACSI data have proven to be strongly
related to a number of essential indicators of micro and macroeco-
nomic performance. For example, frms with higher levels of custom-
er satisfaction tend to have higher earnings and stock returns relative
to competitors. Stock portfolios based on companies that show strong
performance in ACSI deliver excess returns in up markets as well as
down markets. And, at the macro level, customer satisfaction has
been shown to be predictive of both consumer spending and gross
domestic product growth. Te Index was founded at the University
of Michigans Ross School of Business and is produced by ACSI LLC.
Te ACSI can be found on the Web at www.theacsi.org.

& author Melinda Myers
Add a little extra color and mo-
tion to your summer garden with
containers designed to attract birds
and butterfies. Many garden centers
continue to sell annuals throughout
the summer and many of these mid-
season annuals are a bit bigger, pro-
viding instant impact.
Its easier than you think to at-
tract birds and butterfies and the
good news is you dont need a lot
of space to do it. Container gardens
give you the ability to attract wild-
life to your backyard, patio, deck or
even balcony. Simply follow these
four steps and your garden will be
flled with color, motion and a sea-
son of wildlife.
1- Provide food for birds and but-
terfies. Include plants with fat dai-
sy-like fowers like pentas, zinnias,
and cosmos to attract butterfies.
For hummingbirds, include some
plants with tubular fowers includ-
ing nicotiana, cuphea, salvia, and
fuchsia. And dont forget about the
hungry caterpillars that will soon
turn into
beautiful butterfies. Parsley,
bronze fennel, and licorice vines are
a few favorites that make great ad-
ditions to container gardens. You
can even create containers that will
attract seed-eating birds. Purple
Majesty millet, conefower, coreop-
sis, and Rudbeckias will keep many
of the birds returning to your land-
scape.
2- Include water for both the
birds and butterfies. Its a key in-
gredient and a decorative small
shallow container flled with water
can be included in a large container.
Or include a free-standing birdbath
within your container collection. I
used a bronzed leaf birdbath in just
this way. It created a great vertical
accent, added interest to a blank
wall and provided a water supply
for the birds.
3- Give them a place to live and
raise their young. Add a few ever-
greens, ornamental grasses, and pe-
rennials to your container garden.
Use weather resistant containers
that can tolerate the extreme heat
and cold in your garden. Ten fll
with plants that are at least one zone
hardier. Or add a few birdhouses.
Tese can be included in the con-
tainer or mounted on a fence, post,
or nearby tree.
4- Skip the pesticides, please.
Nature, including the birds you
invite into your landscape, will de-
vour many garden pests. Plus, the
chemicals designed to kill the bad
guys can also kill the good bugs
and wildlife you are trying to at-
tract. And, if pests get out of hand,
use more eco-friendly products like
soaps, Neem, and horticulture oil
as a control mechanism. And, as
always, read and follow label direc-
tions carefully.
And to conserve time and energy,
try using one of the self-watering
containers or hanging baskets that
are on the market. Tis helps to
make it both easy and convenient
when time constraints and vaca-
tions get in the way of providing
ideal care. I recently tried using
one of the Gardeners Supply Easy
Roller [2] self-watering containers. I
flled one with wildlife-friendly pe-
tunias along with papyrus and gold-
en moneywort. After a fve-day trip
during hot dry weather I returned
to fnd my container garden in great
shape and hummingbirds visiting
the fowers.
So gather your family and get
started planting your wildlife con-
tainer garden today.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A
strong social whirl brings a new round
of good times to fun-loving Rams
and Ewes. Cupid also is busy aiming
arrows at single Lambs hoping for a
heart-to-heart encounter.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A
romantic incident could take a more
serious turn if the Divine Bovine con-
siders meeting Cupids challenge.
Meanwhile, a professional opportu-
nity is also about to turn up.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A bit
of hardheaded realism could be just
what the Twins need at this emotion-
ally challenged time. Face the facts as
they are, not as you want them to be.
Good luck.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22)
Many opportunities open up. But you
need to be aware of their actual pros
and cons. Check them all out and make
your choice from those that offer more
of what you seek.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) A more
stable situation begins, allowing you to
feel more secure about making impor-
tant decisions. Meanwhile, be sure to
meet your project deadline so you can
move on to other things.
VIRGO (August 23 to September
22) Congratulations. A new personal
relationship thrives as you learn how
to make room in your busy life for this
wonderfully warm and exciting emo-
tional experience.
LIBRA (September 23 to October
22) A new contact opens some doors.
Thats the good news. But theres a
caution involved: Be sure you protect
your rights to your work before show-
ing it to anyone.
SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem-
ber 21) A former colleague might seek
to resume a working partnership. Ask
yourself if you need it. If yes, get more
information. If no, respectfully decline
the request.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to
December 21) Good times dominate
your aspect. So why not have a party to
celebrate a loved ones success? And
do invite that special person you want
to know better.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to
January 19) The shy side of the Sea
Goat soon gives way to your more
assertive self. This should help you
when it comes time to speak up for
yourself and your achievements.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru-
ary 18) A new period of stability will
help you deal with some recently
reworked plans. Once you get your
current task done, you can devote
more time to personal matters.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20)
Things are finally much more stable
these days, so you can restart the pro-
cess of meeting your well-planned
goals with fewer chances of interrup-
tion or delay.
BORN THIS WEEK: You love
being the brightest light wherever you
are, and people love basking in your
warmth and charm.

On Aug. 9, 1936, at the 1936 Ber-
lin Olympics, black American track
star Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold
medal of the Games in the 4-by-100-
meter relay. His relay team set a new
world record of 39.8 seconds, which
stood for 20 years.
On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-
29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the
worlds first atom bomb over the city
of Hiroshima, Japan. Some 80,000
people are killed as a result of the
blast, and another 35,000 are injured.
At least 60,000 more would be dead by
the end of the year from the effects of
the radioactive fallout.
On Aug. 7, 1959, the U.S. unmanned
spacecraft Explorer 6 is launched into
an orbit around the Earth. The space-
craft featured a scanner that transmit-
ted a crude picture of the Earths sur-
face from a distance of 17,000 miles.
The photo, received in Hawaii, took
nearly 40 minutes to transmit.
On Aug. 11, 1965, in the Watts
neighborhood of Los Angeles, a riot
began that eventually ranged over a 50-
square-mile area. With the assistance
of thousands of National Guardsmen,
order was restored five days later. The
violence left 34 dead, 1,032 injured,
nearly 4,000 arrested and $40 million
worth of property destroyed.
On Aug. 8, 1974, President Rich-
ard Nixon announces his intention to
become the first president in American
history to resign. With impeachment
proceedings under way against him
for his involvement in the Watergate
affair, Nixon finally bowed to pressure
from the public and Congress to leave
the White House.
On Aug. 10, 1981, Pete Rose of the
Philadelphia Phillies gets the 3,631st
hit of his baseball career, breaking
Stan Musials record for most hits by
a National Leaguer. It was only Roses
2,886th game; it had taken Musial
3,026 games to set the mark.
On Aug. 12, 1990, fossil hunter
Susan Hendrickson discovers three
huge bones jutting out of a cliff in
South Dakota. They turned out to be
part of the largest Tyrannosaurus rex
skeleton ever discovered, a 65 mil-
lion-year-old specimen. Amazingly,
the skeleton was more than 90 percent
complete.
