Electrical Tests on 330kV Line (Tests performed at the 330kV DC TL Shiroro Abuja) 1.

. General The following electrical tests should be performed before the energizing of the line Sequence of phase and Continuity

2.Equipment The equipment used is: High voltage Tester, type PGK 0-150kV (made Bauer)

3. Tests 3.1 The following tests to be performed on every phase will detect eventual faults between phase and ground. (see attached sketch) The voltage will be increased from 0 to 50kV. If after 1 min the voltage has not dropped the test is considered as successful. 3.2 The following test to be performed on every phase will detect eventual faults between phases. (see attached sketch) The voltage will be increased from 0 to 50kV. If, after 1 min, the voltage has not dropped the test is considered as successful. 3.3 The following test to be performed on every phase will confirm the sequence of phases. (see attached sketch) If the voltage cant be increased, the test is considered as successful. Note: The voltage applied is 0-50kV / 1 min Line disconnector terminals at Shiroro and Katampe substations will be used to perform these tests.

Note to record sheet for 330kV line high voltage tests During the tests on B phase it was not possible to increase the test voltage, therefore a fault on the line was indicated. In order to determine whether the fault was on the line or in the terminal equipment at the substations the equipment at both ends was disconnected. The fault was found to be still present. Attempts were made to calculate the distance to with inconclusive results because the available test equipment was affected by static induction on the line leading to inconsistent readings on which to base the calculation. At the same time, search parties had been sent to look for earth connections at sites recently worked at without success. After discussions in which it was concluded that the fault was probably a fine earthing wire used for static discharge which would be very difficult to find by either a land party or a helicopter, I suggested that the line be energized to blow the fault clear and then be energized one more time to show if the fault had cleared. There was no objection from the other parties present. The line was first energized at 16h32 and tripped after a very short while (probably less than a second) with the protection at Shiroro recording a Zone 2 fault. After reseting the relays the line was re-energized at 17h06 and this time did not trip. The ABB Contractor
