here is no better gift we can give our children and ourselves during Christmas than to give service. I remember some of the favorite gifts I got for Christmas as a child--a real cooking toy oven, a gymnastics mat, and an art farm--but I dont remember the dozens and dozens of other toys that I got over the years. But etched into my memory, perhaps forever, are the moments of service that we gave to others. Doing secret santa for others is one of my favorite memories. I smile to think of the feelings of excitement and happiness that filled me while secretly dropping gifts and notes off to people with my brothers and parents. I remember clearly as a teenager the Christmas that my mom asked us all to pick a wrapped present under the tree with our name on it, before we opened it, to give to a family in need. I dont remember one gift I got that year, but Ill never forget the wonderful feeling of charity my mother created in us. My grandmother passed away a couple of years ago, and my grandfather is often very lonely. Last Christmas, every time I saw my grandpa, he seemed to have a special twinkle in his eye. There was a family in his ward that was secretly doing the 12 days of Christmas for him. He told us the details almost everyday of what they dropped off, the notes they left, etc. He looked forward to that everyday. I remember almost being moved to tears as I realized the joy this family was brining to my grandfather. Its so important that we go beyond the decorations, the lights on the house, and the gifts and stockings. Christmas will be most memorable and special for your family when you reach out and do something special for someone else. Here is one idea your family could do for a special family, widow, or single person in your ward or neighborhood.

Angels We Have Heard on High

Day #3

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play And mild and sweet the words repeat, Of peace on earth, good will to men. I thought how as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had roll'd along th' unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men. And in despair I bow'd my head: "There is no peace on earth," I said, "For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men." Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men." 'Til ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth, good will to men! Come to Bethlehem and see, Him whose birth the angels sing Come adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord the newborn king. See him in a manger laid, Whom the choirs of angels praise Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, While our hearts in love we raise.

Good will henceforth from heaven to man, Begin and never cease!
Day #5 While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night
While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. "Fear not!" said he; (for mighty dread Had seized their troubled minds), "Glad tidings of great joy I bring,To you and all mankind. "To you, in David's town, this day Is born of David's line, The Savior, who is Christ the Lord; And this shall be the sign: "The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands,And in a manger laid." Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels, praising God, who thus addresses their joyful song: "All glory be to God on high, And on the earth be peace:

Good will henceforth from heaven to man, Begin and never cease!"While our hearts in love we raise.

The Night Before Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; "Now! Dasher, now! Dancer, now! Prancer, and Vixen! On! Comet, on! Cupid, on! Dunder and Blixem! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"

Day #10

Holly Jolly Christmas

Have a holly, jolly Christmas; It's the best time of the year I don't know if there'll be snow, but have a cup of cheer. Have a holly, jolly Christmas; And when you walk down the street Say Hello to friends you know and everyone you meet. Oh, ho, the mistletoe hung where you can see; Somebody waits for you; Kiss her once for me. Have a holly jolly Christmas, and in case you didn't hear, Oh by golly, have a holly, jolly Christmas this year. .

Star of Bethlehem
Song: Star Of Bethlehem Lyrics Star of Bethlehem shining bright bathing the world in heav'nly light, Let the glow of your distant glory fill us with hope this Christmas night. Star of innocence, star of goodness gazing out since time began, You who've lived through endless ages view with love the age of man. Star of beauty hear our plea, whisper your wisdom tenderly. Star of Bethlehem set us free make us a world we long to see. Star of Bethlehem, star up high, miracle of the midnight sky, Let your luminous life of heaven better our hearts and make us fly. Star of happiness, star of wonder you see everything from afar, Cast your eye upon the future make us wiser than we are. Star of gentleness, hear our plea, whisper your wisdom tenderly.
