Two traffic crashes occurred the morning of July 31 in Pittsfield Township, causing traffic backups for motorists in the area along US-23. A 33-year-old Ann Arbor woman was critically injured when her vehicle crossed the median at about 7:30 a.m. on US-23 near I-94 and struck a cement wall on the northbound side, according to the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety. A second crash occurred later in the morning on Michigan Avenue right at the US-23 exits and although this crash is considered minor, its location created traffic backups in the area. At 7:38 a.m. July 31, township firefighters responded to the accident on northbound US-23 near I-94. They found the Ann Arbor
woman unconscious and pinned in the drivers seat of her vehicle. Firefighters removed the cars roof and drivers side door using hydraulic rescue tools and reciprocating saws, according to the press release. Michigan State Police temporarily closed US-23 in both directions to allow for a landing zone for a helicopter, which was initially requested due to the possibility of an extended rescue effort. The firefighters and Huron Valley Ambulance provided care for the critically injured woman once she was removed from her car about 21 minutes after the first firefighters arrived on scene. Emergency responders were then able to transport her to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital without the need of the helicopter, which was cancelled.

Of the five council positions, only the Ward 5 seat will be contested in the November election. Wards 1 through 4 had only Democrat candidates and will go uncontested for their positions in November, barring a writein campaign. Chuck Warpehoski beat Vivienne Armentrout, snagging 56 percent of the vote in Ward 5, according to unofficial results released by the county late Tuesday.
