MAWP (ASME) The Boiler and Pressre Vessel (BPV) code defines the Maximum Allowable Working Pressure

(MAWP) of a vessel to be the pressure that will create stresses in the shell that equal the allowable stresses given in the material section of the code. The piping code has similar criteria, but they call this the "Design Pressure". DESIGN PRESSURE The design pressure is essentially the most severe condition of *coincident pressure and temperature expected in normal operation. MAWP The maximum allowable working pressure for a vessel is the maximum pressure permissible at the top of the vessel in its normal operating position at the designated coincident temperature specified for that pressure. * Coincidence A coincidence is an event notable for its occurring in * conjunction with other conditions, e.g. another event. As such, a coincidence occurs when something uncanny, accidental and unexpected happens under conditions named, but not under a defined relationship. Conjunction A conjunction is a part of speech that is used to connect two or more words or phrases. Examples of conjunctions are the words "and" and "but."
