Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study Not all needs of a person to live are material things. There are those things which satisfy and gives value to our existence. These are the need s to love, to be loved, to communicate and to be accepted in the society that he /she belongs. It is considered vital for us to live, that we make friends and so cialize to others with confidence and courage. And so, one should look good and presentable to gain confidence in his/her daily interactions with other people. Grooming is considered already as one of mans vital for living. A nd cosmetics is one thing a woman or a teenager could not lived without. It woul d be easy to blame a $50 billion cosmetics industry for fueling the fire of cosm etics consumption. In North America alone, thousands of millions of dollars are spent on personal care product each year. The industry employs thousands of peop le, from truck drivers and chemists to marketing experts. Of all consumer goods, personal care products are the most heavily advertised. Scientific principles a re used to make these products. However, the first use of cosmetics happened in Egypt around 3,000 BC. Oils and scented flowers were combined to produced perfum es as the ancient Greeks do. Dangerous chemicals in cosmetics are also nothing n ew. Mercury, white lead, and even poisonous belladonna were all present in some of the beauty concoctions made in the Middle Ages and Renaissance in Europe. It was 1920s America, however, that gave rise to what we know as the cosmetics indus try Not surprisingly, cosmetics industry trade groups declare that l ead and other toxic substances are present in such small amounts in most of the cosmetics product. Even these products are not intended to be ingested our bodie s absorb chemicals through the skin, as is demonstrated by the efficacy of items like the nicotine patch. Toothpaste, hair conditioner and gels, deodorant, body lotion and make-up are all applied to various porous surfaces on our bodies. Ac cording to EWG, a research group that maintains a database of 25,000 cosmetic pr oducts, only eleven percent of the more than 10,500 ingredients in personal care products have been assessed for safety. One third of these products contains at least one chemical linked to cancer. Organic and natural cosmetics are much more popular in Europe th an in America. In todays world, the act of buying organic cosmetics is an act in direct support of higher quality, bioactive ingredients. Organic and natural cos metics will take the leading role in the future of the cosmetics industry, not b ecause they are non synthetic, but because they are real. One of the personal care needs of most teenagers today is acquir ing healthy and attractive hair. These are expensive hair products sold in the s tores but the prices are not affordable to many teenagers and to most of these p roducts contain chemicals that were considered as threats to the health for it c ontains various chemicals. To solve this problem, available local plants that pr oduce flowers rich in pectin and other muca as fluids can be a good source of in gredients for preparing organic hair polish. Flowers like those of Gumamela, Yellow Bell and Euphorbia may co ntain nutrients for maintaining healthy hair. To save money from buying expensiv e and to be free from dangerous commercial hair polish, gel for hair can be prep ared from local plant materials. Thus, this study will test the effectiveness of the flower gels of Gumamela, Yellow Bell and Euphorbia as organic hair polish. Statement of the Problem General

The purpose of this study was to conduct an experiment to test t he effect of the gels of Gumamela particularly its flower stems, leaves and stem s as the hair teenagers with the end in view of gathering information for the de velopment of organic hair care product from local plants.

Specific Specifically, this study was designed to answer the following qu estions. 1. What is the level of acceptability of the stiffness of hair samples appl ied with the gels of flowers, leaves and stems of Gumamela? 2. What is the level of acceptability of the glossiness of the hair samples treated with the gels of flowers, leaves and stems of Gumamela? Hypotheses Statement of preliminary answers to the specific problems are fo rmulated as follows. 1. The nd stems of 2. The mela is the stiffness of hair samples treated with the gels of flowers, leaves a Gumamela is the same? glossy effect on hair of the gels flowers, leaves and stems of Guma same.

Significance of the Study Target beneficiaries of the findings of this study are the follo wing groups. 1. Hair care and beauty experts. Findings of this study will provide inform ation about the possibilities of using local plants as source of ingredients for the preparation of hair care products which are safe and cheap. 2. Community. Findings of this study will give insight to the residents of Palompon, Leyte and other towns for new job opportunities related to the develop ment of the innovative hair care product from local plants. 3. Researchers. Findings of this study will serve as a baseline information for conducting similar researchers in the identification and testing of the eff ectiveness of other local plants as materials or ingredients for hair care produ ct. 4. Botanists. Findings of the study will give more information to the plant researchers about the benefits gotten from Gumamela, Yellow Bell and Euphorbia. This research would serve as foundation to related and future researches. Scope and Delimitations of the Study This experiment was focused on the testing and evaluation of the stiffness and glossiness of hair applied with the flower, leaf and stems of Gum amela. Participants in the testing and evaluation of the effectiveness of the fl ower gels were randomly selected high school students who are currently enrolled in Palompon Institute of Technology in the school year 2009-2010. The testing a nd evaluation were done for three months from January to March 2010. Surveys wer e conducted by using questionnaire in order to test the effectivity on hair base d on stiffness and glossiness. The selected students given samples for them to u

se and then rated. Definition of Terms For clarification of the meaning of the concepts adopted in this research, the following words are defined. 1. Flower gel. Is the sticky fluid extracted by pounding and squeezing flow er petals, leaves and pounded stems of Gumamela. 2. Glossiness. Is the characteristic of the hair that shines after applicat ion of the hair polish made of flower gel. 3. Hair Polish. Refers to the preparation of the mixture containing substan ces or chemicals of the flower gels that keep hair smooth, glossy and soft. 4. Smoothness. Is the characteristic of the hair that gives gliding touch w ithout roughness after application with the hair polish made of flower gel. 5. Softness. Is the characteristic of the hair free from brittleness after application with the hair polish containing the flower gel. 6. Scalp. Is the outer covering of the head where the hair is attached. Conceptual Framework This study is anchored as the concepts as presented in the follo wing conceptual framework.
