AFTER the sporting fever of the Olympics fades,
there is an artistic time ahead in Heswall, with
the Riverside Players performing Calendar Girls at
Heswall Hall this month and preparations moving
apace for the towns arts festival in October. Heswall
Operatic Society are holding an open evening ahead
of their 100th anniversary celebrations and the St
Peters Singers are encouraging new voices for their
performance of Handels Messiah.
In this edition weve got news from Heswall Sea
Scouts, local weddings, police news and nostalgia,
as well as the regular features, including book

Operatic society seeks new members
Heswall Operatic Society are looking for new members to take part in their 100th
anniversary production next year. The concert will feature songs from Andrew Lloyd
Webber musicals and the likes of Les Miserables and Oliver. Call the society on 07812

Shopfifters could be named and shamed
Heswall Neighbourhood Policing Team is working in partnership with the Wirral
Chamber of Commerce and traders to identify persistent shoplifters.
This is with a view to naming and shaming them along with seeking Banning Orders,
Bail Conditions and CRASBOs to deter them.
The installation of upgraded CCTV and the expansion of the Shop Link radio system
will help in providing intelligence and evidence in order to prosecute all offenders.
Suspected thieves arrested
POLICE responded to concerns about burglaries in vulnerable businesses and homes
in Heswall by providing a highly
visible presence. A number of
individuals were stop checked,
with two arrested on suspicion of
shoplifting and burglary.

Heswall Flower Club will meet
on Wednesday 5th September
for its combined AGM and
demonstration evening at Heswall
Hall starting at 7.45pm. Following
the AGM at 8pm demonstrator
Shirley Robinson, from Timperley,

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is
used in spray-function toilets?

Laughter is the best medicine
Staff at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and their families
turned out in their hundreds for a knockout day of fun, silly games and physical
exercise at the Arrowe Park Hospital.
More than 600 people attended Treating Yourself Well Day, the second such event
in the Trusts pioneering Fitter for Health campaign, which aims to support and
encourage staff and their families to take part in regular sport or physical activity.
Drink drivers convicted
THREE Heswall people have been convicted of drink driving. A man from Sandy Lane
was fned 100 and banned for three years for an offence in Downham Road South. A
woman from Pye Road was fned 75 and banned for 17 months for the same offence
in Downham Road South. A man from Delavor Road was banned for 18 months and
fned 370 for drink driving on Thurstaston Road, Irby.

An Evening with Johnners (centenary
edition): Brian Johnston (edited and
introduced by Barry Johnston)
In early 1993, at the age of eighty, the
legendary cricket commentator Brian
Johnston embarked on a nationwide
theatre tour with his one-man show
called An Evening with Johnners.
This book, frst published in 1996
and containing all the material from
the original recording, is now republished
as a centenary edition updated by his son Barry
Johnston and illustrated by John Ireland. Never
a professional cricketer himself but always the
games most enthusiastic fan, Brians skill and
warmth as a master raconteur shine through on
every page as he recalls his early years at Eton
and Oxford, his war service in the Grenadier
Guards and his remarkable broadcasting career at
the BBC for which he worked for nearly ffty years.
There are hundreds of hilarious memories, stories
and anecdotes all told in hi inimitable friendly style
as well as many of the outrageous puns and jokes
for which he is so well-known. A fantastic gift idea
for anyone who loves cricket.

Ireland: the illicit meetings in
a rundown cottage outside
the town and assignations in

With these memories comes something
much darker- the more recent recollection of
the daughters suicide ten years before. As
he re-visits the place where she died he is
also made to revisit his youth and come to a
new understanding of what happened when
he was a teenager.
This novel is a joy to read for the sheer
beauty of the language; several times I had
to stop and re-read a sentence to get the full
favour of the words. There is gentle humour
in it too and the author has a wonderful
knack of addressing you, the reader, as
though you and he are having a conversation
together alone. A real treat.

My Cool Shed: Jane Field- Lewis
Building on the success of My Cool Caravan and My Cool Campervan
in 2010 and 2011, this follow-up book celebrates the humble and not so
humble shed, from artists studios to beach huts, and the diverse ways
in which owners are styling them. My Cool Shed features 35 sheds,
small cabins, garden rooms, beach huts, modern architectural mini
masterpieces and other small spaces given purpose by their owners
to pursue their hobbies, careers, creative endeavours or just to fnd some peace and solitude.
The book shows a wide range of well styled and elegant sheds, cabins, dens and hidewaways
in attractive locations. The owners stories and accompanying style notes offer insight as well as
inspiration. This is not a how to book, , but more of a feel good book and provider of inspiration.

Fiction: Ancient Light: John Banville
In this stunning new novel from the 2005 Booker prize-winner we meet
Alexander Cleave, an actor who thinks his best days are behind him,
remembering his first unlikely affair as a teenage boy in a small town in 1950s
Ireland: the illicit meetings in a rundown cottage outside the town and
assignations in the back of his lovers car on sunny mornings and rain-soaked
afternoons. With these memories comes something much darker- the more recent
recollection of the daughters suicide ten years before. As he re-visits the place where she
died he is also made to revisit his youth and come to a new understanding of what
happened when he was a teenager.
This novel is a joy to read for the sheer beauty of the language; several times I had to stop
and re-read a sentence to get the full flavour of the words. There is gentle humour in it
too and the author has a wonderful knack of addressing you, the reader, as though you
and he are having a conversation together alone. A real treat.

Sport: An Evening with Johnners (centenary edition): Brian Johnston (edited and
introduced by Barry Johnston)
In early 1993, at the age of eighty, the legendary cricket commentator Brian
Johnston embarked on a nationwide theatre tour with his one-man show called
An Evening with Johnners. This book, first published in 1996 and containing
all the material from the original recording, is now republished as a centenary
edition updated by his son Barry Johnston and illustrated by John Ireland.
Never a professional cricketer himself but always the games most enthusiastic fan,
Brians skill and warmth as a master raconteur shine through on every page as he recalls
his early years at Eton and Oxford, his war service in the Grenadier Guards and his
remarkable broadcasting career at the BBC for which he worked for nearly fifty years.
There are hundreds of hilarious memories, stories and anecdotes all told in hi inimitable
friendly style as well as many of the outrageous puns and jokes for which he is so well-
known. A fantastic gift idea for anyone who loves cricket.
