An elderly woman living at the
Wheatland Lodge was a victim of
phone fraud recently, adding yet
another crime against seniors to
the toll in Strathmore. Police say
this wasnt your average fraud, it
had been kicked up to another
level. The elderly woman received
a phone call from a man claiming
to be her bank telling her that she
needed to take out cash to help
them catch a criminal.
This male asked her to with-
draw cash. It sounds like he was
sort of portraying like it was go-
ing to be a sting, to catch a bad
guy, said Cnst. Shannon White of
the Strathmore RCMP. What was
different about this fraud, White
says, was that the man asked for
her to meet him with the cash.
We do get telephone fraud
and they ask for money to be
sent or they ask for a money or-
der or theyre looking for credit
card information; what concerned
me the most about this one was
that they were actually asking for
her to meet them in person, said
White.
Its concerning that its been
stepped up to a different level, be-
cause then you wonder, are they
going to rob her? Is there going to
be violence? You always have to
worry about their physical safety.
The woman did not fall for the
scam, but police are concerned
this type of fraud may happen
again.
They prey on seniors who may
be more willing to trust and to
help somebody out. Its always in
the form of to help, said White.
The RCMP urges everyone to
keep on the lookout, to watch out
for scams like these.
Please dont be fooled, please
never meet somebody in person,
never take out money [for them]
said White.

Every summer the Strath-
more Municipal Library
hosts a summer reading
program. Its meant to be a
chance to get kids out read-
ing while having fun during
their summer holidays. Each
year there is a different
theme to the program. This
years theme was Imagine.
The program was huge
this year, I think the theme
has a lot to do with itour
co-coordinators had really
cooked up a great program
The summer reading program Imagine at the Strath-
more Municipal Library has ended for another year.
Everyone was encouraged to take part in fun carnival
like activities, with games, obstacles and of course face
painting on Aug. 24. Following the carnival, the movie
The Lorex was shown for everyone.

for the kids, said Carmen
Erison, assistant director of
library services.
With a theme like imagi-
nation, the sky was the limit
and honestly it was wonder-
ful.
The co-coordinators were
Janine Owl Child and Kris-
tine Deisman. Libraries
across Canada used the
theme Imagine this year.
The TD Summer Reading
Program picks the theme
for the program every year.
Weekly themes on the
other hand were chosen by
us, under the Imagine um-
brella, and those we chose
based on what we thought
would work, suggestions
made by TD, and also based
on some pre-planning
phase reading that we did,
said Deisman.
We loved Superhero
Week. During this week
participants learned about
the histories of popular
comic book characters, cre-
ated their own superhero
personas, participated in
superhero training, faced
superhero challenges, and
became certifed superhe-
roes, with a ceremony and
certifcates and everything,
said Owl Child.
During superhero week
the kids were also taught
about real people with su-
per-human abilities, such
as a man immune to the ef-
fects of electricity and ab-
normally strong babies.
Owl Child said she re-
ceived a lot of positive feed-
back from parents about the
teaching element that was
implemented this year.
Every program we ran
we showed kids a Power-
Point or a Prezi.com pre-
sentation that we created
ourselves to teach them
about something related to
the theme of the week, said
Owl Child.
So we taught about su-
perheroes, real pirates and
princesses, different ways
to tell stories, mythological
creatures, fairies, gnomes
and dwarfs, said Deisman.
The kids also learned
about them from a frst na-
tions traditional perspective
as well, and about infuen-
tial people in the world.
Fridays were often flled
with scheduled feld trips
such as one to the Strath-
more Fire Department,
Wheatland EMS and more.
August 24 marked the end
of this years summer read-
ing program, which was a
hit with everyone.

Pennies for MS bring Strathmore near the top spot
After driving by A&W one day and seeing that they were collecting pennies
for mS Bev Slater, with Global Training Centres accounts receivable depart-
ment took a challenge to work to see which department could bring in the
most. A total of $718.95 was raised between all of the departments. With
a goal of $10,000 this year, the money from Global Training Centre brought
the total up to $11,318.95 as of Aug. 24.
This is probably enough to put me at number one in Alberta. Were going
for $15,000 next year, said Will Whatley, Strathmore A&Ws manager. Joni
maunsell (left), Debby Bingham, Will Whatley, Jaycee Peters, Kyra Peters,

After a summer storm on Aug. 14 gust-
ed through with winds at approximately
100 km/h residents of Siksika Nation are
asking for aid. The storm caused severe
damage to several families homes, mak-
ing them unlivable. High winds tore the
roofs off houses in the most extreme
cases. The storm was one of a kind, and
with only a thunderstorm watch in ef-
fect, residents of Siksika were caught
unawares by the severity of the storm.
[It was] something Id never seen be-
fore, Ive seen a storm front form poten-
tial tornadoes but thats not what I saw
coming at us, said Tom Little Child, Fire
Chief for Siksika Fire Department, this
came in hard and fast.
People have vacated their homes and
have lost many of their things to the ele-
ments. They have been forced to move
in with family members or have been
assigned temporary accommodations by
the Disaster Services Committee. Most
of these families have lost everything,
explained Little Child.
Unfortunately, here on the reserve
its a little bit different than people liv-
ing outside the reserve (who) may have
insurance. A lot of the homeowners
out here unfortunately do not have in-
surance, so once everythings gone, its
gone, said Little Child.
The band has been working for the
past two weeks, fnding and providing
the necessities for people affected by
this disaster.
The band has done a substantial
[amount], myself along with the Disaster
Services Committee, we have found tem-
porary housing for (people from) the se-
verely impacted homes. So those families
now have a roof over their head. Family
Services and Social Services came forth
big time providing emergency food,
emergency shelter, emergency clothing,
we did that for two weeks, he said.
Its clear with the amount of damage
caused and by the number of families
who have been severely affected ap-
proximately 15 Siksika needs more
help. Wesley Water Chief contacted the
Strathmore Times asking for the help
Siksika needs.
I guess its on behalf of the nation
members who cant speak for them-
selves. Im trying to assist the disaster
committee [to] help the people who
need assistance. I mean, not everybody
would be asking for donations, so I
guess Im speaking on their behalf, said
Water Chief, I see it as my role to assist
in any way that I can.
The Disaster Services Committee in
coordination with Siksika Family Servic-
es Department, White Buffalo/FCSS is
accepting fnancial contributions to help
these families in need as well as general
hygiene products and household items.
The Siksika Fire Hall is accepting dona-
tions during regular business hours. For
more information call the Fire Hall at
