PRIEGO CASTLE

1. What does the name Castillo de Priego refer to? We give the name Castillo de Priego to an ancient Moorish fortress that was restored in the XIII and XIV centuries. It is a large fortified complex. 2. Why is the Castle so austere? Because it was built for defensive purposes. It is a military fortress, not a palace. 3. But, did people live in it? Yes, they did. The third floor was thought as residence, so it is more decorated than the rest. Its windows have lancet arch and Nasrid capitals.

4. What was the purpose of the other floors? The first one was a water tank (aljibe) and the second one was a warehouse.

5. The castle is surrounded by several towers. Which of them is the one called Torre Gorda? The Torre Gorda (Torre del Homenaje) is the quadrangular tower. This tower is very important because it was declared as a Monument of National Historical Artistic Interest in 1943. 6. How high is it? The tower reaches a height of 30m., although it is now partially submerged. Activity: Find, at least, three marks the masons carved on the rocks and then draw them.
