LoudounCountyPublicSchoolsSuperintendentDr.EdgarHatrickreferredtohimselfasthe schoolsystemsCEOduringaLoudounChamberofCommerceeventSept.6. Unlikeotherindustries,publicschoolsdontgettosetproductionquotas,Hatricksaid.Asa CEO,Ivehadtoadjusteachyeartoanincreasingnumberofstudentsandtheincreased diversitytheybringtoourschoolsystem. Theevent,whichbroughtseveralofLoudounsmajorbusinessesandschoolstogether,focused ontherealeconomicsofeducation,accordingtoHatricksspeech. Since2001,LCPShasopened38newschools22elementary,eightmiddleandeighthigh schools.AccordingtoHatrick,LCPShasaddedmorethan36,000studentsinthelast12years. LoudounCountySchoolBoardChairmanEricHornberger(Ashburn)spokeonthefourBs budgets,boundaries,businessandbettermentthatneedtobeaddressedwiththeschoolsystem andareintheboardsdirectviewofworkingtoward. Theschoolboardissetonsettingamorerigorousscheduleforthefallinordertosetnew attendancezonesforthetwoelementaryschoolsthataresettoopeninAshburnayearfrom now. Theprocess,Hornbergersaid,involvesatotalof13existingelementaryschoolsthathouse 10,000students. Justtoputthatincontextforyou,bycomparison,theprocesslastfallofestablishingan attendancezoneforthenewFrederickDouglassElementarySchoolinLeesburginvolvedonly nineexistingelementaryschoolsandlessthanhalfthenumberofstudents,Hornbergersaid. Hornbergeralsopointedoutthatthiscomingspring,theboardhastotakeupthesameprocess againfortheopeningofanewmiddleschoolandtwonewhighschools. Itismysincerehopethatgoingforward,theSchoolBoardwillmakebetteruseofitsexisting policyandestablishattendancezonesthatenablemorekidstoattendschoolsclosetohomeand withothersintheircommunitywheneverpossible,hesaid. Movingforwardwiththenextbudgetcycle,Hatricksaidtheoperatingbudgethasonly increased8.5percentversustheenrollmentgoingup20percent.Bythis,Hatrickpointedout, theaveragecostperpupilhasdropped9.3percentsince2009andisrankedoneofthelowestin theMetropolitanWashingtonarea. Asforteachersseeingraises,Hatricksaidwiththegrowththecountyhasseensincethe economicdeclineandtheconstantdemandfornewschools,itsbeenaroughtime. HatrickexplainedLCPStriedadoptingFairfaxCountyssalaryschedule. Wewentthroughaperiodoftimewhereweweretiredofbeingatraininggroundforteachers. Wevejustfallenbehind,Hatricksaid. ButwiththefourBsHornbergerpointedout,Hatrickreassuredissuesofmakingtheschool systemoperatesmoothlywillbeaddressedappropriately.
