Article debate En 6

Individual and in group Individual: Search for an article on the Internet or in one of the files of the English department. Choose an article that you find interesting. The article must be at least one page long, no pictures/photos included! (Check with me before you start working with it!) The first step is to read the article carefully. Make sure you understand it and learn all new words in the text. (Write down and translate the words!) Think about who wrote the article. Is it trustworthy? Is there a hidden agenda? Is there a message or a purpose with the text? Prepare an oral summary of the article. Use keywords from the text. What are your opinions and thoughts about the topic? Does the text arouse any questions/feelings or ideas? With your article as a starting point come up with three interesting questions that can be discussed in a small group. The questions may have to do with the specific topic of the article or the topic in general. Example: if your article is about the September 11 terror attack, your questions could be:What can be done to prevent/stop terrorism? Are you afraid that something like that will happen in Sweden, why or why not? What do you think about the security at airports nowadays, more than ten years after the attack? Do you feel safe? The questions must be handed out to your group members a couple of days before the debate! In group: Debate leader Present your article title/writer and give a short summary of the topic. Tell your group about your thoughts and opinions about the article/topic. Present your questions and start a discussion/debate in the group. Make sure everyone in the group gets a chance to speak, help them and involve them in the discussion. When you take part in the debates Read through everyones questions carefully in advance and prepare your opinions/answers so you can be active in the discussions. You may have to look up some words, you cannot do that during the debates!

Things to consider: When you make a statement there might be someone who disagrees and wants to argue with you. Then there might be a good debate between the two of you! A debate is a battle with words, an exchange of opinions. And just as in a football games you have to stick to the rules, or the debate wont lead you anywhere. Try to think about the following: Use facts and not your personal feelings Stick to the subject and dont attack the other person: He is just stupid Dont generalize by saying: Everybody knows, Everybody does Dont use hostile or aggressive words like: That is bullshit
