SigEp Moms Club

Cal Delta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at San Diego State University

Welcome Back to the Parents Club!

Welcome back to the SigEp Parents Club (previously called the Moms Club) at San Diego State University! The lazy days of summer are behind us. Schools back in session at SDSU and our sons are waking up before the crack of noon to get dressed, forge for food, attend classes and build a lifetime brotherhood with their fellow fraternity brothers of SigEp! As a mom, Im excited my son has joined this particular fraternity. Its well known in the Greek system that SigEp is a different kind of fraternity. One that has different ideals that our sons benefit from. One that promotes higher learning and centers on the values of Sigma Phi Epsilon; Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. Its worthy to repeat these idealsVirtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. These are the qualities that we parents pray are rooted deep in our sons. Having a close brotherhood with other young men who share these same important values is essential. I think we all agree that our sons have found a wonderful home with SDSUs SigEp fraternity. The old saying A parents work is never done still holds true even when our sons are away at college! The Parents Club is designed to support the fraternity through acts of service and events held at the fraternity house and other locations around San Diego State. Through this Parents Club, we hope to add a difference to the everyday life of our sons. Theres so many ways we can give supportfrom sending surprise notes and care packages, to collecting essentials needed for the new fraternity house, to buying items on the fraternities Wish List. We Parents can make a huge difference in the lives of our sons!

SigEp Exec Board Planning for Another Great Year

Dear Parents, After a long summer of planning, the Cal Delta Exec Board has exciting plans for the Fall 2012 semester. With the achievement of a five year plan that was devised only three years ago, we have embarked on a new approach that we hope will reinforce and enhance the Balanced Man culture that has driven our Chapter to prominence! This plan, entitled The Initiative includes a variety of strategies which apply to each of the Executive Leadership positions. The most visible change that has come out of The Initiative is a reformation of how we conduct meetings in order to accentuate the idea of our fraternity as a forum for the most involved men on the San Diego State campus. The Initiative also includes the posting of a giant map in our chapter house where members can post the meeting time and location of the Recognized Student Organization (RSO) they are a part of in order to draw SigEp Members to become more involved in other forms of association besides Sigma Phi Epsilon. Other programs include a new and enhanced Academic Advisor Program, established by our Chaplain, Phil Giori. This program aims to boost up our average GPA by providing assistance to Members who are falling behind on their academics. The program includes advisors who have excelled in their field of study, as approved by the Chaplain. These advisors conduct weekly tutoring sessions and are available for Members in their corresponding field of study. In addition to the Academic Advisor Program, Sigma Phi Epsilon has made a large leap forward in establishing itself as a Residential Learning Community by instituting a universitycertified class entitled SigEp Academic Success (BA100). This class has been incorporated into our Sigma and Phi challenges and provides an opportunity for Epsilons to mentor junior members by teaching certain sections of the class. The class is taught by Christine Probett, who is also the assistant dean of the business department. At the moment Sigma Phi Epsilon is just finishing this semesters rush week, almost 400 young men showed their interest in Sigma Phi Epsilon by attending our various rush events. Out of this 400, we have chosen 45 new members who embody the values of a Balanced Man. A few of these new members will be looking forward to receiving our Balanced Leader Scholarship (BLS) at the BLS banquet which will be taking place at the San Diego State Alumni Center on October 1st. The celebration is focused on the fraternitys principles of Virtue, Diligence, Brotherly Love and the Balanced Man ideals of a sound mind, sound body, and healthy spirit. At the banquet, undergraduate brothers, Balanced Leader Scholarship Finalists and alumni will be recognized with awards and scholarships. Cal Delta will also be looking forward to a variety of events this semester including a Paintball brotherhood event and Parents Weekend. As a part of this weekend, we strongly encourage all parents to attend our Barbecue and tailgate before the Aztec football game against Hawaii on October 6. As a part of this event, we are proud to say that brother Jeremy Poincenot, a member of our fraternity who became legally blind his sophomore year will be speaking about his experiences in Sigma Phi Epsilon and how he became the International Blind Golf Champion and an inspirational speaker. The event will also be attended by our Alumni and Faculty Fellow. All the Best, Nadir Bouhmouch-VP Communications on behalf of the SigEp Executive Board

How Parents Club Helps Out

After discussion about what the SigEp Parents Club can do to help the fraternity, the subject turned to how to afford all these great ideas. While researching the other Parents Clubs across the nation, we discovered that each Club has yearly dues of between $35 - $45. We agreed on dues of $40 for each Parents Club members in an effort to finance the activities and to buy a few of the Wish List items for the fraternity. Take a look at page 1 to see the entire Wish List our sons have. Parents Club dues are $40 per year. The money will finance the activities of the Club and buy Wish List items for the new fraternity house!

Please send in your dues today so we can keep doing even more for Delete our sons and the good of SigEp!

Meet Ron Smith - Chapter Counselor and Alumni

Dear Parents, Welcome to SDSU and the California Delta Residential Learning Community, Sigma Phi Epsilon! My name is Ron Smith and I work with the Chapter members as their Chapter Counselor. The Chapter Counselor works directly with the Chapter Leadership and members to help them have a more successful and meaningful fraternity experience. An alumnus of SDSU, I joined SigEp in the fall of 1965. I hold a B.A. and M.A. from SDSU and spent 33 years working in the Escondido Union School District as a teacher, Asst. Principal, and Elementary School Principal. I retired in 2008 from Bernardo School, where I served as founding Principal. I met my wife of 41 years, Molly, during my time in the fraternity, as well as some of my best friends in life. I started my interest in effective leadership during this time by getting involved in chapter activities and trying to emulate the best and most effective leaders in our chapter and on our campus. Speaking for all Cal Delta Alumni, it is our hope that your sons have a similar positive experience. Our mission is to guide and sustain the chapter so that this can happen. If you ever have questions or concerns about your son or chapter activities, I hope that you will contact me, using the information provided in this newsletter. Thank you for your support. Your sons are truly amazing and we look forward to their many successes and happy memories. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during the upcoming events during the SigEp Family BBQ on October 6. All the Best, Ron
