1996 after servIng as 0eputy CommandIng Ceneral. He graduated from
the US |IlItary Academy In 196J wIth a commIssIon In the nfantry. He
earned a |aster of ScIence In operatIons research from the US Naval
Postgraduate School. HIs mIlItary schoolIng Includes the Armed Forces
Staff College and the US Army War College.

SIlvasy saw combat duty In three dIfferent countrIes. n 19641965 he partIcIpated
In the US InterventIon In the 0omInIcan FepublIc wIth the 82nd AIrborne.
From 19661967 he served wIth the 101st AIrborne 0IvIsIon In 7Ietnam. n
198J he was back wIth the 82nd AIrborne for the InvasIon of Crenada.

Some of SIlvasy's key duty assIgnments were as 0Irector of the DperatIonal Plans and
nteroperabIlIty 0Irectorate for the JoInt Staff at the Pentagon. n Korea he served as
AssIstant ChIef of Staff for the UN Command In Seoul. He also served as 0eputy ChIef of
Staff for 0octrIne and 0evelopment wIth the US Army TraInIng and 0octrIne Command In
Fort |onroe, 7IrgInIa.

High Ground, the stately Veterans Monument located on
the grounds of the Vinton War Memorial honors past Vinton
and Roanoke County residents who were killed in action
along with military men and women who have or are currently
serving.
The handcrafted monument is the first piece of public art in
Vinton. The name of the monument, High Ground, came
from a Vietnam War veteran who said in battle, a soldier
always looks for the high ground. Likewise, visitors crossing
the compass plaza to the octagonal pavilion will find their
attention drawn ever upwards: up the broad steps, up the
rough rocks and terraced fountain, to the granite panels in-
scribed with the names of fallen soldiers and up again to the
bronze American flag. Finally, the visitors attention will be
drawn to the inscription encircling the architectural-cast
concrete lintels overhead: HERE PAUSE AWHILE TO
BLESS THEIR SLEEP WHO FELL IN WAR TO SAVE
OUR PEACE THEN GO RENEWED AND BUILD THE
LIVES THEY LOST FOR YOU IN GOD WE TRUST.
