Primary Care Alcohol Pathway

Piloting a pathway for alcohol problems within primary care

Overview of project
The project aimed to pilot a care pathway within primary care for people with alcohol problems. It was based upon best practice and current NICE guidelines. As part of the pathway clinicians proactively screened individuals for alcohol misuse, offering brief interventions when appropriate. The objectives of the project were to: Increase both the number of screens completed and brief interventions delivered. Improve the number of appropriate referrals to the Community Alcohol & Drug Service. Reduce alcohol related harm and admissions to secondary care by ensuring the appropriate interventions were delivered at the appropriate time.

Leadership Challenges
Engaging with and stimulating interest amongst GP

practices within the Clinical Commissioning Group. Implementing change at a time of major upheaval in the NHS due to the shift in commissioning responsibilities. Dealing with the competing priorities of organisations and individuals.
Managing staff facing an uncertain future.

Progress/outcomes
The project was presented at the Clinical Commissioning

Group clinical meeting. The care pathway has been approved by member practices. Training has been secured at no cost. GP practices have signed up to pilot the project. Staff training in brief interventions is due to take place in the Autumn.
