Review: A Metro Nightmare
The novel is one of the few books available in the market which deals with the problems of todays
generation without giving lengthy sermons. The story as a whole is a fast paced suspense thriller which
keeps the reader glued to the novel till the last page. The author has used his life experiences to make
the story real and interesting. The story is primarily based in Delhi and Bihar but the author has
described many cities in the novel like Kochi,Trichy ,Jamshedpur and Kolkata which appeals to the
people who like to travel.

The story starts with a suicide of a young girl named Gauri who
jumped to her death in front of a Delhi metro train. The investigation of the suicide is carried out by two
police officers Yahsvardhan and Arjun Singh. At first they suspect that she has killed her husband and
then committed suicide. With the help of an ATM card found with the deceased girl they trace the
company where her husband Siva worked. They visit the company NHEL and got the address of his
flat. In his flat they found a laptop and some diaries in which Siva has described his past life. They
found that he had married to Gauri in a court in presence of two witnesses- Pooja and VPN Singh .
Arjun tried to trace the witnesses to know the real story. In the meantime they also found a police report
against a person named Rohit against whom the couple had filed a report of harassment. Yahsvardhan
delved deep in Sivas life to find out the truth. Meanwhile in an another plot, Pinki-Yahsvardhans
daughter is in love with a boy Mithilesh who happened to be college friend of Siva. The past story of
Siva dealt with how he had to deal with the parental pressure to succeed in the competitive world but
he could not fulfil the wishes of his parents who had very high hopes for him. The story proceeds when
he joins NHEl and start preparing for civil services.

Meanwhile there were two love marriages in his family. His eldest brother succeeded since he was a
highly paced officer but his other brother had to succumb to the wishes of his parents. Siva also fell in
love with a girl who happened to be the sister of the Bhavi just elder to him. However he faced severe
objections and also failed to qualify civil services. They married secretly but soon his mother died in
mysterious circumstances. When he went to his home he also died and later on his wife committed
suicide. While Yahsvardhan was going thorough the investigations he found out the love story of his
daughter and Mithilesh. Meanwhile Pooja and VPN also narrated their version of the story to them.
Mithilesh and Pinki were hounded out of Delhi. At the end Yahsvardhan and Arjun were able to solve
the mystery behind all these deaths and Mithilesh and Pinki managed to convince their parents.

Although the story is a thriller, the author has put forward his views on the love marriage(both inter
caste and intra caste) , the undue pressure on the child to succeed in the examinations, the
backwardness of his home state Bihar and resurgence of Bhojpuri culture, the reasons behind Saas
Bahu friction and male chauvinisms in the society. The story has its own share of love, drama, comedy
and action a perfect material of a bollywood film. All the characters of the novel are well described
and all plays important role in the story. The only weak point of the story is its ending which is abrupt
and could have been better. Also some part of the story could be cut short to make it a compact story.

Nowadays market is flooded with the novel having the same old plot- campus love stories with a little
twist The author has tried to do something new in his maiden venture

We are pleased t o int roduce Mr. Shiv Kumar on t his online newspaper,
who recent ly launched his debut novel A Met ro Night mare. The book
has been published by Leadst art publicat ions
A brief background about Shiv Kumar he was born and brought
up in Bhagalpur. Aft er doing his schooling from Mount Assisi , he
went t o Delhi for complet ing his t welft h from Modern School
Barakhamba Road and t hen went t o BI T Sindri t o complet e his
engineering in Elect ronics and Communicat ion. There aft er he
j oined BHEL and have served at various places in West Bengal,
Bihar, Jharkhand , Ut t ar Pradesh, TamilNadu, Kerla and now
working in Noida office.
angvani: Hi Shiv, it s great t o have you on our online newspaper. We
have read A Met ro Night mare and f ound it pret t y int erest ing. We could
f eel t he dif f erence in t he st yle of writ ing as t he st ory progressed. The
way suspense was built up in t he init ial chapt ers and it progressed
subsequent ly was awesome.
Shiv: Everyone who has read t he book said t hat t he suspense in t he
st ory kept t hem glued t o t he book t ill t he end. When I st art ed t o writ e
t he st ory I want ed it t o be f aced pace so t hat readers cannot resist
reading it and I t hink I have succeeded.
angvani: The middle of t he st ory seems t o be your aut obiography. I s it
so?
Shiv: Some event s of t he st ory are def init ely inspired by own lif e but
overall it is a f ict ional st ory. I n f act I believe every aut hor get s
inspirat ion f rom his own lif e.
angvani:The end of t he st ory is unconvent ional. Why did you choose
t his ending?
Shiv: Well, I t hink everybody want s a happy ending t o a st ory and
especially a love st ory and so I t ried t o present a happy ending. Some
liked it ; some could not digest t he ending.
angvani: The last f ew chapt ers are very f ast paced, in f act like a
bollywood f ilm. Do you want it t o be made int o a f ilm?
Shiv: Our f ilms are expression of what we t hink. Many people have
comment ed t hat t hey would like t o see my st ory t urned int o a f ilm.
angvani: Bhagalpur is f amous f or a lit erary genius Sharad Chandra. Do
you wish t o be like him?
Shiv: I can never dream t o be like him. But now a days Bhagalpur or we
can say Bihar as a whole do not produce qualit y writ ers. I n f act people
all over t he count ry know Bihar f or all t he wrong reasons. I j ust want t o
change t his percept ion. I n t his novel I have t ried t o highlight reasons
f or our backwardness of our st at e and I will cont inue writ ing about
Bihar.
angvani: The maj or t heme of your st ory is love marriage. You have
t ried t o j ust if y it . Do you t hink it will be accept ed in Bihars societ y?
Shiv: I have not j ust if ied it but have put my views about it . I n f act I
have devot ed a chapt er where t here is heat ed debat e bet ween t he
police of f icer and t he wit ness of t he marriage and it has got lot of
reasoning.
angvani: You have devot ed one chapt er t o your spirit ual belief s. Do
you t hink people will agree t o it ?
Shiv: Again it is my personal view. Readers are f ree t o agree or
disagree on it .
angvani: How do you t ake out t ime f rom your busy work schedule t o
writ e t he st ory?
Shiv: I most ly writ e when I am at home in t he evening. My wif e is
cooperat ive on t his!

cooperat ive on t his!
angvani: How did you get t he inspirat ion about t his st ory?
Shiv: Well I always want ed t o writ e a suspense st ory. I had writ t en a
st ory in my class magazine in Mount Assisi. I f ound some of t he event s
of my lif e f ascinat ing enough t o be t old as a st ory. I combined my lif e
experience t o my desire of writ ing suspense st ory and got t his st ory.
Now a days most of t he novels writ t en by I ndian aut hors are based on
t heir campus experience. I wished my st ory t o be dif f erent .
angvani: Dont you t hink t he pricing of your novel will hurt t he sales of
your novel. Now a days novels of good writ ers like Chet an Bhagat are
available in less t han Rs 100.
Shiv: I believe if my st ory is good readers will read it even if it is priced
at Rs 200. Even t his is not more. As I have already said in my
promot ion mat erial t his is less t han a price of Pizza or a bot t le of
whisky!
angvani: This is your f irst piece of work t o get published. How do you
f eel regarding t his lucky break? Can you t ell us how you approached
Leadst art Publicat ions and if any ot her publisher, and t he process t hat
f ollowed? A lot of aspiring aut hors st ruggle t o get not iced and your
answers will def init ely help t hem.
Shiv: Well, t his is a long st ory. Nobody want ed t o t ouch A Met ro
Night mare as it was t he work of a f irst - t ime aut hor. I had f inished t he
manuscript about a year ago and approached many publishers but
none responded. Finally, Leadst art publicat ions agreed t o publish my
st ory. This publicat ion values t he wort h of new aut hors and hence
gives t hem a chance.
angvani: How did you come t o choose t he t it le A Met ro Night mare
f or t he book?
Shiv: This is indeed a st range name. Some people t hink it is relat ed t o
night mares people f ace in met ros or a ghost st ory. But t he meaning of
t he t it le is also a suspense which is revealed only in last chapt ers.
angvani: Apart f rom t he love st ory you have also t ouched ot her issues
in it like- unmindf ul complet ion t o get int o I I T or I AS , regionalism,
dowry and ot her issues. How did you balance t hese issues in a single
st ory?
Shiv: I have int roduced various sub plot s t o highlight t hese issues and
it has merged well wit h t he main st ory.
angvani: What is t he response of your novel?
Shiv: People have enj oyed reading my novel. The great est compliment
I got was in Bhagalpur where someone t old me t hat he has writ t en a
line f rom my novel on his working t able f or inspirat ion. The line t hough
not a part of t he st ory is- One get s what one deserves and if anybody
t hinks t hat he has not got what he deserved it was because God
wished it like t hat .
angvani: What kind of works do you plan t o publish in t he near f ut ure?
Shiv: I am working on anot her manuscript which will be a polit ical
suspense t hriller. The set t ing of t he st ory again will be in Bihar and
Delhi. There will be lot of suspense and act ion in t he st ory. The st ory
as usual will be f ast paced wit h a message and a short but cut e love
st ory.
angvani: I s your book available at Bhagalpur?
Shiv: Yes, it is available at all t he maj or book st ores at Bhagalpur.
Leadst art has a good dist ribut ion net work and it is available at all maj or
st ores in I ndia. I t has also at t ract ed f airly good reviews.
angvani: How do you f eel about Angvani?

A Metro Nightmare A BookReview
JAN 25 Posted by Nish
Gosh, this month has been busy, busy, busylong days and long nights
making up for all the fun I had this last month. But, still managed to get in
a good amount of reading. What I have been unable to do is log and review
all the books I readso you can expect a bunch of long-pending reviews
coming up shortly. Apologies to all you great writers whose books are in my
reading/review queue, I am reading them, and will be reviewing them
shortly.
One of the first books I picked up this year was A Met r o Ni ght mar e
by Shiv Kumar. This is his debut novel, and his choice of subject is
refreshingly different.
The story starts off with a mysterious suicide. A lovely young girl
jumps in front of a passing train, leaving behind a suicide note saying
that she has killed her husband. The police in charge now have to
investigate her death, and try to find her dead husband.
As the investigation proceeds and more details emerge about the life of the dead girls
husband, it becomes a love story chronicling an inter-caste love affair. In the process, the story
talks about the social issues of our day conflict between generations, people struggling to
develop an identity of their own in a world where engineers/IAS officers/IPS officers are the
creme de la creme and the rest just struggle along.
My t hought s on t he book:
This is a surprisingly good read. I loved the way the book is structured, the easy way it moves
from one chapter to the next, the way the suspense is built. I even liked the surprise ending,
normally I dont like surprises at the end of the book but here I do. I loved the character
development no heroes or heroines herejust a pair of normal-in love couples trying to
navigate their way through life.
There is a faint autobiographical feel to this book, and that only intrigued me further. I mean,
we have all read ghastly tragedies in the newspapers about honor killings (where brothers and
parents of the girl kill her and her lover if they dont approve of the relationship), and suicides
on railway tracks. This book provides a little peek into what could have gone wrong for people
to resort to such violent ends. Did the writer himself face such a situation? Obviously, his life
story has a happy ending .

Coupl e of t hi ngs t hat coul d be bet t er :
z The book could have been better edited to remove a little of the preachy monologues that slow
the pace of the book somewhat.
z The printing quality of the book could also be a little better.
Apart from these nit-picks, I liked this book a lot.
