Three Cheers for Chiropractic!

Bodybuilders and fitness people have been using chiropractic very extensively in order to stay healthy and fit. I found it was better to go to a chiropractor before you get injured. We are a perfect team the world of fitness and the world of chiropractors. - Arnold Schwarzenegger* So there you have it. The infamous actor/athlete/politician believes chiropractic is the way to go. We couldnt agree more! Chiropractors have had a bum rap for decades, but like anything of worth, its place in the world continues to grow and gain acceptance throughout the world. According to dictionary.reference.com, the word chiropractic is the combination of chiro, which means hand, and practice, which means practical. This word was coined in the late 1800s. So, a chiropractor, would mean, in my own words giving a practical hand to those in need. I kinda like that. It has nice ring to it, and it is exactly what todays chiropractor should be all about: Using the practical, natural way to care for your health through highly skilled and trained hands. In this day and age of GREEN, what could be better? We are finding that in order to survive and create a healthy and natural lifestyle, we need to get back to time tested and careful preservation of our resources, and this definitely includes our bodies. Instead of worrying about little green men, we need to focus on BEING green men and women. Chiropractics approach is natural, works with the body, and doesnt try to trick the body into health. It gently allows it to simply return to optimal performance built into it from the getgo of time by a very wise Creator. Since this is National Chiropractic Month, we will take a deeper look at how this profession came about, what the latest research is showing, and just what chiropractic entails. Its 1 gonna be good, so find somewhere comfortable and lets get started. http://drlavanga.com/blog/?p=219

The History of Chiropractic

Western medicine is relatively new you know, the pills we are prescribed, the cures that deviate from simple natural healing. Although much of our modern allopathic medicine has roots in the research of famed Hippocrates, of the Hippocratic Oath which all doctors take, we have evolved into so much more than practical medicine. China and Greece are the founding contributors to the idea of chiropractic. According to the American Academy of Chiropractic (ACA) website, writings from 2700 BC discuss spinal manipulation to relieve back pain. Hippocrates, (460-370 BC) believed that dis-ease came from a combination of the environment, what we ingest, and our lifestyle. Wow, was he smart! Today, it seems as though we try to control everything but ourselves. We indulge in all kinds of unhealthy activities (which is NO activity at all, in some cases), consume everything but wholesome, healthy foods and drinks, expose ourselves to a wide range of harmful environments, and then try to fix whats broken by using pills, chemicals, and other artificial remedies. But we Americans are smart too, and we have had a steady return to holistic, natural cures, including chiropractic care. Our beforementioned Hippocrates was actually a huge proponent of healing hands, and wrote entries describing it in his journals. In fact, he is quoted as saying: "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases". Fast forward about 2000 years to the 19th century. Our modern chiropractic (practical hands on treatments) was developed by a man well versed in the knowledge of his day concerning anatomy and physiology. DD Palmer, who started the well-known Palmer College of Chiropractic, tried his theory out on a janitor who was having hearing difficulties. It worked, and the profession of chiropractic was born. See our website for more information about DD Palmer. www.wellspringfamilycare.com

MEL GIBSON, on chiropractic care:

"You get hurt all the time. All you gotta do is just, like, eight takes of running down a hill and you twist an ankle, I got a chiropractor to come along to the [Patriot] shoot, because they can actually stick you back together within 15 minutes. He used to come every other week, from Los Angeles to South Carolina, spend a week and work on the entire crew. All the stunt guys were like, 'Oh, fix my disc.' He's putting their discs back in. The guy's amazing."

November 2012 For those of you who also like the team approach here are 4 suggestions for when you visit any new health care provider: Be sure to include everything you do or use when filling out the history form. This applies to vitamins and supplements you may take, and any complimentary medicine providers. Alert your provider of any changes you may make to your regime at your next visit. Help your provider stay informed. If you thinking about adding something new, do careful research, and ask those providers you trust, questions about the idea. Your healthcare provider needs your input in your care. There are so many options open to todays patients that every provider will not think of every possible avenue. Help them help you: be proactive.

CAM? Whats Under Your Hood?

Some call it alternative medicine, some call it complimentary care. Some just call it CAM, or Complimentary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Boltons style of chiropractic care is highly integrative and utilizes the team-care approach. Some chiropractors have gone so far into alternatives they stand alone. There are many persuasions within the field, and there is a great deal of documentation on many of them. Dr. Bolton leans towards a more conventional style of medicine, combining the wisdom of modern science research of the Western world, as well as the principles of natural therapy. It is important to him that patients have a team of healthcare providers, each coming from their own niche and expertise to bring the best possible outcomes for Cookeville residents. Dr. Bolton is well respected in the community for his contribution to the excellence of our healthcare, and is adamant about staying progressive without being led into unproven or questionable territory. You are in good hands with Dr. Jim Bolton. As part of the complimentary team, Wellspring Family Chiropractic provides therapeutic massage therapy. As we all know, muscles, ligaments and other tissues are an integral part of the skeletal system, abducting (moving away) and adducting (moving towards) in order to create agility and movement. Additionally, it is sometimes recommended to have a massage so that the angry muscles dont undo the adjustments of the bones. http://nccam.nih.gov/health/tips/ttt

Move it, Buddy!

The benefits of moving continues: improves depression, selfesteem and sense of well-being, increases daily energy, and reduced stress. Hows that for a return on your investment? Finally, we get to the application of all this wisdom. What do we do if we just hate exercise? We have compiled a list of activities that may not seem like so much work. Just be consistent in your endeavor to move. The suggestions on the following list will bust excuses like I dont have time, it is too hard, and its so boring! Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, and Chi Gong These are great for resistance exercises. Walk the dog and take the stairs. Move while watching TV. Just dont sit down; bend, jog in place, lift small weights, whatever you can do to stretch, move, and get your heart rate a bit faster. Park your car at the farthest parking space possible from the store. Do it yourself. Instead of asking someone who is up to do something, get up and do it yourself! Take the kids (grandkids) to the playground and actually play with them. Instead of trying to take a big load of groceries in, take several small loads over several trips. Garden, sweep the driveway, or mop the floor. Play video games that require you to move. The point is we can add exercise to our life style without a lot of effort. Small steps can keep our body and mind in better health.

Keep Busy and Remove Restraint

Believe it or not, the title of this article, Keep Busy, and Remove Restraint is the root word meaning of our word EXERCISE! Our ancestors did not need to exercise. Their entire life was one of staying busy and making things happen, unlike our button-pushing, remote-access world. Because of our wonderful technology, our efforts no longer have to be extended to physical movement like our forefathers lives did. This is why the medical world is constantly harping on us to exercise! Exercise has been the issue of countless frowns (these dont count as exercise), and groans. We even feign being busy to avoid keeping busy and removing restraint. Go figure. Since movement is vital to our health, it is important to include this subject in our National Chiropractic Month newsletter. According to Keep Your Brain Young with Exercise, an article published on September 25, 2012 by Dr. Donald M. Petersen, Jr. publisher of Dynamic Chiropractic Magazine, exercise is the key to a quality life. He further states that REGULAR exercise reduces the risk of heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer and other types of cancer, and fibromyalgia. It also lowers blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and increases your life expectancy and attenuates cognitive impairment and reduces dementia risk. (Peterson, 2012). In a Mayo Clinic article, Physical Exercise as a Preventative or Disease-Modifying Treatment of Dementia and Brain Aging by E. Ahlskog, et al (September 2011), it was further stated that rats and mice who used treadmills and running wheels, have significantly better outcomes in memory tests than their sedentary counterparts. Tests on primates produced similar findings. This, in turn, gave the brain better neuroplasticity which is the how the brain employs memory and learning abilities.
