Assembling electrical wiring support systems

Knowledge to be assessed and evidenced:

1. What are the specific safety practices and procedures that you need to observe when forming and assembling electrical wiring and support systems? To include: any specific legislation, regulations or codes of practice for the activities, equipment or materials. include BS7671 and OSG and what sort of rules they tell you about conduit and trunking, ie cable capacities, fire barriers.

2. What are the hazards associated with forming and assembling electrical wiring and support system components and how can they be minimised? Name 3 hazards when cutting and bending conduit and trunking

3. What are the hazards associated with the tools and equipment used and how can they be minimised? Such as: using bending and forming equipment, handling long lengths of pipe and trunking, using solvents and adhesives. Give an example for each when 1.bending and forming equipment; 2.handling long lengths of pipe and trunking; 3. using solvents and adhesives.

4. Why is it important to wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment? Name 3 types of ppe you would wear when handling, forming, gluing, drilling or bending conduit or trunking, and say why you would wear it.

5. Why is it important to keep the work area safe and tidy? Forming and cutting conduit and trunking can use a lot of space and can become messy. Explain what sort of mess can be made and why its important to tidy up before and after.

6. How do you interpret circuit diagrams, wiring diagrams and specifications used for the assembly? Name 3 examples of information/specification to do with conduit and trunking, that you can obtain when looking at a job sheet.

7. What are the various types of electrical wiring and support systems and how are they used? Give 3 examples of where you would use PVC and metal conduit, and trunking, and say why you would use one and not the other.

8. How do you mark out lengths to be cut taking into account any allowances? Such as: for bending, screwing, gluing. Explain the process of measuring and cutting conduit and trunking and how do you make sure its not too short.

9. What are the methods of holding workpieces without damaging them? Such as: use of pipe vice. Explain how you stop the conduit from being damaged in the conduit vice. The vice that you shouldnt use for conduit and why. What do you do to stop trunking from being squashed?

10. What tools and equipment are used in the cutting, bending and forming operations? Such as: the use of conduit bending machines, threading equipment, hot air torches and bending springs. Name all the tools you use when marking, cutting and bending conduit and trunking.

11. What are the methods of producing bends and sets in conduit materials? Such as: 90 degree bends, offsets, bridge sets. Describe how you have formed a double set or a right angle in metal conduit

12. What are the methods of bending plastic conduit? Such as: using hot air guns and springs. Explain how you have made a right angle bend in plastic conduit.

13. How do you produce fabricated bends in trunking and traywork section material? Such as: bends, Tee junctions, double and saddle sets. Describe in detail, step by step, how you formed any ONE of the following in trunking: right angle bend; tee piece or joining 2 pieces together.

14. What are the methods of forming screw threads on ends of conduit? Describe step by step the process of forming a thread in metal conduit.

15. How do you use appropriate tools to remove all sharp edges and burrs? What tools have you used to get rid of sharp edges after cutting conduit or trunking.

16. What are the various fittings used to assemble conduit, trunking and traywork systems? To include: screwed fittings, cemented fittings, straight connectors, bends, Tees, inspection fittings, light, power and control outlet boxes. Name 5 or more different items you have used to join equipment together ie

17. Why are inspection fittings important and how are they used? Such as: elbows and junction boxes. Junction boxes and conduit boxes have lids, what is the advantage of this?

18. What do you need to look for when checking finished components/assemblies? Such as: dimensional checks, position and angle of bends/sets, out of alignment, loose connections, insufficient supports, damaged threads, deformed pipe around area of bend, burrs and sharp edges that could damage cables. Give 5 checks you think your tutor would be looking for when assessing your conduit and trunking assessments.

19. How do you check alignment of components? To include: use of plumb bobs, levels and by visual means. What do you use the ensure your work is vertical and horizontal, and how does it work?

20. What are the methods of supporting and securing the components? Such as: position and spacing of supporting brackets and devices, using pipe clips, saddles and supports. How do you fix conduit and trunking to your board?

21. What problems can occur with the installation operations and how can these be overcome? Name 2 problems YOU have experienced this year with conduit and trunking, and how have you fixed them?

22. When should you act on your own initiative and when should you seek help and advice from others? Specific example with conduit or trunking

23. Why is it important to leave the work area in a safe and clean condition on completion of the assembly activities? Such as: returning tools and equipment to the designated location, cleaning the work area and removing and disposing of waste. Specific example with conduit or trunking
