ones is a family name in circle track racing that has been around for many years, and Andy Jones plans to keep it going for many more. This young gun from Princeton, Minnesota has grown up at the track and is now showing what he has learned; taking on the world's fastest, most exciting form of circle track racing...winged sprint cars!

Coming from a family of modified racers, sprint cars is an entirely new beast, but it hasn't shown difficult to those keeping an eye on Andy. He started racing go-karts at age 6, and did very well, but at age 9 decided to stop and travel with his Dad, Dennis who was racing at tracks around the country. It was Andy's Dad inspired him to start racing at all. He remembers hanging around the garage with his Dad, two uncles, and his grandpa. Growing up around and with his Dad in the race car, Andy always knew he would be behind the wheel and in the cockpit himself one day!

ANDY JONES #73

Not Just Spinning His Wheels!
Andy's first win happen to fall on lucky winning numbers; 7/7/7. It was a memory he remembers clearly. "My family was there, and having been around my Dad plenty of times when he won, I knew how that felt, but to see the faces of my Mom and Dad when it was me holding the checkered flag, was priceless," said Andy. From then on, Andy's success kept building. So far he has won in every class he has raced and achieved some very special honors. Andy admits he didn't just jump into the driver's seat of a sprint car, instead it started with go-karts early on, then into a B Mod, where he had pretty good success for the few years he ran them. In late 2009 he was given the opportunity to run a modified car for Steve Bjorgan. Andy took that opportunity and shined in Cedar Lake, winning his first time that night ever racing a modified. The 2010 season consisted of a few B Mod shows as well as the Mod car, and finished 3rd in the Como Modified Series points. It was also in 2010 Andy was able to run a sprint car six short times, but ended up breaking a motor so it would end the season for them in that class. After some discussion and decisions made with the team, 2011 was when they took on Sprint Car racing full-time! With all of the focus on that car, Andy took home the hardware for 4 feature wins, and finished in the top five and ten almost every race. With so much success right out of the gate and this being only his second full year running a Sprint Car, it was hard to believe when Andy said, "It was a huge learning curve to come from a mod into these animals." I've heard words used to describe sprint cars such as: animal, beast, wild, crazy, wicked and so on, but sometimes only a driver can put the correct words to how it feels to control one. Andy helped from his point of view. " There isn't really any perfect way to describe it. For me, I guess if you take the fastest, wildest roller coaster in the world and try to be in control of it. From the fans stand point it looks like we are just driving, but when you're trying to hook up 700+ horsepower on basically an ice skating rink, it's hard. We adjust the wing back and forth, pull tear-offs, drag the break to hook up the tires, plus try to think about maneuvers, possible issues ahead and plan for it before something happens. All of this in only moments around the track." Many racers push for faster cars and more action, but is Andy one of 'those' drivers? "Truthfully it never crossed my mind, I always grew up around modifieds, so that was my lifelong dream until the Mastell family came along and changed all of that for me, " says Andy. Andy was friends with Behn, a family member of the Mastells. Behn used to go racing and spend time with Andy at the garage until he started racing himself. In conversation on night Behn happened to mention that his uncle had bought a sprint car, which instantly got Andy's mind 'racing'. He was able to make contact with him, and one thing lead to another until he would officially be sponsored by Mastell Brothers Racing. "The Mastell's are the new owners of St. Croix Valley Raceway, and have changed the track and been such a huge asset to the

Page 5

racing community," says Andy. "The first night they opened they had 360 sprint cars there!" Andy feels that night outweighs so many of his achievements to this point, racing for the Mastell's on opening night, against some of the toughest guys on the track, such as Brooke Tatnell , Jerry Richert Jr, to name a couple......and taking home the win! As far as this season, Andy admits he isn't sitting where he would like to be. Mother nature has been one of the culprits, mixed with a little bad luck. They started with two cars, running the '08 car the first few races, and due to that 'back luck', they switched back to the 2010 car, where Andy says he feels much more comfortable. To add to their tough start this year, they also lost a close friend and big asset to the team. Ron Fleischer passed away May 21, 2012 after battling a short battle with lung cancer." It has put a huge damper on our racing and the whole team," says Andy. "He was a great friend to all of us, and always a happy guy who loved to go racing. His wife and two daughters keep telling me I was the son he never had, and how he lived for my racing. I remember when I first got a sprint car and called him up. He always told me he wanted to be a part of a sprint car team! We did our best the last two years with him and we will always cherish the memories with Ron in Victory Lane and around the garage. We have given it our all to continue on racing in his memory, but things are just not the same. It's kind of hard to go out and wheel a racecar

and have the right mindset after something like that has happened." Even with the rough start, Andy is determined to run consistent races and taking home some wins, in memory of Ron, for MBR, for his friends, family, and fans! He is excited for the new 410 motor on its way into the car, and hopes it will help push his career even farther. With everything this young athlete has done and accomplished, he is extremely appreciative of everyone who has stood by him and supported him. Andy would like to thank his Dad, who has been his biggest supporter since day one! "He's always been there to help me, and to tell me when I'm doing something wrong!" (jokingly said Andy). He also wants to thank his Mom, Wendy and sister, Jessica, for always being there and putting up with the numerous 'difference of option disagreements' between father and son. The Mastell family, for the chance to prove himself, and for being such a great support for him and the sport. Also to Nate, Mike, Ron, Jethro, Justin, Carly, The Fleischer Family, Mastell Brothers Trailer Service, GRP Motorsports, Premier Used Truck Parts , Angus Meat Market, Stewart Plumbing, Bjorgan Trucking, Speedwerx, Jones Chassis , Warren and Lorna, Norm And Karren, Vicki and Terry, Sandy and John, Mellissa, Andy, Kaylee and Khloe! WORKING ON WORKING
Getting America Back To Work
I recently had an opportunity to do a training class for a local company. As I was trying to get a gage on the experience level in the audience, one question I asked was Has anyone been unemployed recently? It wasnt what I expected, but I got absolutely no response. I asked does anyone think we have an unemployment problem in America, again no response. I finally asked does anyone have one relative that is unemployed. Literally every hand went up. There is a big disconnect here, that some people that have been employed dont get to see the struggle that Americans are having getting work with a decent wage. I see it everyday. Technically, in my world as a self employed individual, I get to experience the job market every single day. If you had to define self employed, it is basically sometimes working waiting for employment. Take a look at our economy, the reason we are sucking wind is the job market blows. If people are not working, people are not spending money on a variety of things. Lets take the once thriving adult toy industry, also known as cars, bikes, watercraft, and sleds. The industry is suffering because of the economic situation in the United States; yes the great super power has one knee on the ground. Job loss, home foreclosures, credit cards maxed out, bank-

ruptcy, high gas prices, and no spending. It is a damn shame that shape of economy is where it is in 2012....but wait we have a bunch of politicians riding white horses that are publicly stating they can get us out the mess. The problem is, some of these same politicians are the same decision makers that got us into the mess to begin with. Dont you just love it when they campaign that they want to extend their hand and reach across the aisle. My message is reach across this!!! You cant tell me that while this bull #&*@ campaigning that is going on that someone cant get creative to get America back to work. Heres a couple of statistics to chew on. According to the June 2012 report from the Bureau of Labor statistics 12.7 million Americans are out of work, 8.1 million Americans are in what they classify as involuntary part-time workers, basically meaning that they were forced out of full time positions in a part-time situation. Whats that mean to the American employer? Reduced hours, possible reduced wages, no benefits, and a workforce that is scared to death about making a stink, be-

cause they are fully aware of the job market situation. Do the math thats a little more than 20 million Americans that have a gun to the head. If you havent been there, it sucks, its depressing, its stressful, and its embarrassing to be the head of a household, single mom, or returning Veteran to be walking the streets banging on the doors looking for a job. Speaking of our returning veterans why is it so difficult for the men and women that stepped up to the plate to protect us from the tyranny abroad, finding it hard to find decent employment. The key word is decent employment, sure there are a number of manufacturing jobs at minimum wage that maybe available. Readers these are our true Americans and they are living on the street or living at below poverty level. If you dont believe it, you have been living a sheltered life or believing the sometimes fabricated numbers of Americans out of work. Heres another statistic there are 30 million registered small businesses in the United Sates, couple that with big corporations, Government agencies and Municipalities and you have a variety of sectors that can

Page 12

Find us on Facebook Wheels of Thunder

July 2012

offer decent wage employment. The math is there, if these businesses could hire one unemployed individual, give them a decent wage we could knock the snot out of the unemployment numbers. That word numbers is an actual real person, people that would love to have a paycheck, people that would welcome spending the money on groceries, clothing, restaurants, movies, and yes maybe get to the point where they can finally afford the small luxuries that they once looked at as an adult toy. Thats how we get America back. It sounds pretty simple to me; I think we used to call it the multiplier effect. It is a simple math problem. I take it our elected officials havent figured that out yet including some that sit in the throne. Com on man!!! Get with the program. Why drag your feet when you could be a hero? Heres an example of how that multiplier effect works. One unemployed individual gets a job, they spend money at the local restaurant, the restaurant employee spends the tip money at the motorcycle shop for bike repairs, the motorcycle shop orders more supplys from a local vendor, the local vendor hires another person to produce more products, and the cycle is repeated again and again. Over the last ten years I built a decent relationship with many of the sports related dealerships, bikes, watercraft, off road, etc. I can tell these are business owners that took the leap of faith, some of them long term family owned businesses. They are taking it in the shorts and it all boils down to the state of economy. How much longer some these businesses can hang on. Some of you may know of a business, dealership, maintenance, paint shop, accessories, or attire that couldnt hang on. The banks turned their back, the credit rating went upside down, and businesses shut the doors. Thats not the American way. The economy has burst the great American dream. A dream of owning a successful business, a dream of passing that business down to the next generation, a dream that you could hold your head high and not worry about the financial impact. Think about those business owners that are no longer with us? Where did they go? What happened to their customers? What happened to the communities that they called home? Take a look at what happened to our home town airlines in Minnesota, Northwest Airlines. Where did those airline jobs go? What happened to the communities where
July 2012

these people lived? What happened to the businesses within those communities? My friends that is whats called the domino effect. One giveth and one taketh away. I know this may sound like venting, but thats what the Boiling Point is all about. If you are confused or disconnected about the current economic situation we are in bad shape. Trust me! My message to the workers that a weekly paycheck coming in. As they say dont quit your day job, because

you just maybe standing in the same line I and many other Americans are standing in. If you are employer take a good look at your staffing, look at the quality of candidates available, Veterans, Baby boomers (without college degrees, but with 30 plus years experience), and skilled personnel. You want to get your company back on top? Hire from this group, thats how we get the USA back on top again. Thats a fact.

Crowds enjoy the Nitro Alley midway

At center stage is four days of groundpounding, lightning-fast, blow-your-mind drag racing. Every household name in drag racing competes at the NHRA Nationals on BIRs world-renown track - the fastest drag strip in the country. Names like John Force, Tony Schumacher, Larry Dixon, Ron Capps, Antron Brown, Brandon Bernstein, Cruz and Tony Pedregon, and Minnesotans Greg Anderson and Jason Line push themselves and their cars to the limits as they compete for a world championship in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. This kind of racing isnt for the faint of heart. The Top Fuel Dragsters get down the quarter-mile track in less than 4 seconds at speeds over 300 mph. They crank out about 8,000 horsepower along the way. Blink at the wrong time and theyre long gone. Theres just as much to see off the track. Every ticket comes with a pit pass, so fans can watch teams tear down their race cars and rebuild them between races. You can stand within feet of the crews as they crank up the car, sending the smell and burn of nitro fuel into the crowd. You can't get that anywhere else. Bring a pen and paper because drivers are readily available for autographs. On the Nitro Alley midway, manufacturers and sponsors create a carnival atmosphere, with interactive displays, simulated competitions, merchandise, food and freebies. But what makes BIR unique among other tracks on the NHRA circuit is its on-site camping, specifically, The Zoo campground, which has a reputation among drivers, teams and fans alike for being THE place to be at the end of race day. With live bands Thursday through Saturday, a specPage 15

tacular fireworks display, 24-hour food, a constant parade of Partywagons, bonfires and rickshaw races, The Zoo is the only place to stay to really experience NHRA Nationals at BIR. Its all good clean fun. For those with small children or who want quieter evenings, the reserved and family camping areas have early noise and traffic rules that are strictly enforced to give families a break from the all-night celebrations. A major change to the event this year will make fans very happy. BIR is moving the ticket gate inside the track to eliminate the long lines at the front gate and to get fans into the track quicker. For day parking, fans will drive into the track and park before buying their ticket or getting their ticket scanned. Campers and those with premium parking will drive inside to the new ticketing site. Advance tickets are on sale until July 18. Get your tickets today and get set for the time of your life! STREET CAR SHOWDOWN The 4th Annual Street Car Showdown moved to a premium weekend this season and took on a new look NASCAR. The Showdown moved to Memorial Day weekend this season and featured the kickoff to the Muscle Car Series drag racing, the

SCCA Harvey West Classic and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, which is the first time BIR has hosted that series. It was the first time that BIR hosted a NASCAR race since 2004, when the NASCAR Elite Division competed on BIRs original 3.1-mile Donnybrooke Road Course. Soggy weather caused the cancelation of qualifying for NASCAR Saturday afternoon but the rain stayed away long enough for the 22-car field to complete the 50-lap, 125-mile race. Teammates Dylan Kwasniewski and Greg Pursley exchanged the lead for the first 40 laps and appeared to be on their way to finish No. 1 and 2, but a third teammate, 21-year-old Michael Self, picked off Pursley with 10 laps to go and then passed Kwasniewski on Turn 9 of the 48th lap, winning by 4.859 seconds. It was Selfs first career win. Despite the weather, decent crowds were on hand to watch the inaugural K&N race. They were also treated to some excellent drag racing during the first of three Muscle Car Series races. Luke Volk overcame a frustrating season last year in the Pro Outlaw Class and won the class this weekend with the top speed: 210.87 mph. He beat Craig Braun with a finals time of 6.854 seconds and 204.48 mph. Dean Bauerly, who won the Pro Outlaw series championship last year, lost to Volk (his teammate) in the semifinals. Bauerlys dad, Mike, continued to dominate the Outlaw Class after winning the series championship last year. He polished off Eric Wourms in the finals with a run of 7.033 seconds and 197.13 mph. Back on the Competition Road Course, when NASCAR wasnt on the track, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) entertained fans with the Harvey West Classic, two days of racing that combined national

and regional drivers competing in a variety of classes. SNOWMOBILE WATERCROSS MAKES A SPLASH AT BIR In another first this year, BIR hosted an IWA Snowmobile Watercross race on Lake BIR. More than 50 drivers competed in drag racing (first one across the pond wins) and oval racing. Watercross is exactly what it sounds like snowmobiles racing on open water. Oval racing featured as many as six racers competing at one time, circling the floating buoys five times before landing back on shore. The sport has been gaining a lot of publicity lately. The week before the BIR race, the Wall Street Journal ran a front-page story about the sport. And then The Weather Channel sent a report and photographer to BIR to do a piece for its national morning show the following week. A second IWA watercross race is scheduled at BIR Sept. 15-16.

Snowmobile Racing has been a big part of my life, and after 40 plus years being involved, one would think you would know most dealers in your area. Thanks to a business who advertises with Wheels of Thunder, I was directed to the small town of Oxford, Iowa located 5 miles west of Iowa City, Iowa. Finding Fast City was a huge surprise, for I had no idea I was dealing with one of the premier Artic Cat Dealers serving eastern Iowa. Steve Seelman started his business working out of his garage. He later built a new building and became an authorized Artic Cat Dealer. Fast City now carries a large selection of new Artic Cat snowmobiles, ATVs, and Utility Vehicles, Triton Trailers, Bosski ATV Wagons, and Hustler Turf Equipment. With more than 21 years of service, Steve has established his business earning the 2009 Artic Cat Gold Dealer of

To me, this indicates these guys know what they are doing, and things will be fixed right at a reasonable price. Steve mentioned to me that if you require warranty or service work on your purchase, he will provide you a loaner to use while your vehicle is in the shop. Now, that is a rare offer from most dealerships. I had a chance to sit down and talk about Steves business, and what he feels is the key to his success. We talked about last winter with the lack of snow and how this affected himself along with other dealerships. The snowmobile sales were actually good at the beginning of the season, however when the weather failed to produce snow, things changed drastically Steve said.

After my visit and photo session, Steve invited me for a ride in the new Artic Cat Prowler XTZ 1000. This being my first time in this type of vehicle, I had no idea what to expect. I got in, strapped the seat belt as tight as I could, and grabbed the Jesus bar. There is a reason for my safety precautions for I already had a chance to see his new Supercharged 700 HP plus Camaro sitting in his garage. This raised a red flag for me, and I knew this guy like fast toys like me. What scared me the most now was I would be the passenger, not the driver. Immediately the foot throttle was peg to the floor and we were drifting in the driveway heading to the woods. I thought Holy Sit#% Batman, we are heading towards a deep ditch below a gravel road at Mach 3. I braced for the impact, but the shocks did their job and next thing I know we are in the air fly-

ing over the road into another ditch. This reminds me of a ride at an amusement park and why I dont get on them because this guy is grinning ear to ear. The raw power and traction are incredible, and now Im thinking I want one of these, only I will be the driver! Back at the shop, I gained my composure and think what a wonderful experience this has been to meet Steve and his staff. Our conversation leads into, of course racing, and after sharing our past we find out we actually know each other from racing snowmobiles. It truly is a small world, and finding this business tucked in the rolling hills of Iowa surrounded by cornfields will be a surprise for you also. This may be a small town, but this Artic Cat dealership defiantly has a big city selection! This is the bad boy Steve took me for a test ride in!

very enthusiast feels a special attraction to a certain make or model of an automobile. Import, domestic, car or truck, everyone takes a liking to a certain vehicle. For AJ Mehta it was the Chevrolet Corvette. After building and owning one of the Mid-West's finest C5 Corvettes, AJ decided it was time to move on and start over, this time with his own C6Z.

With the motor and drive-train all set, AJ focused on the rest of the car. AJ is another enthusiast who has a reputation for building complete cars, so with a beefed up motor, he could not leave the rest of the car alone. The rolling stock was upgraded with a beautiful set of COR Cipher, 3-piece wheels. Sized 20x10 up front, and a steamrolling 20x13 out back they fill up the C6Z's arches quite well. The wheels are wrapped in Toyo T1R tires, 275/30/20 up front and 345/30/20 out back. The stock C6Z calipers provide plenty of stopping

The end result is one fun driver, and AJ makes sure that this toy gets plenty of use. AJ is a regular at local autocross events, and Brainerd track days where he puts his C6Z through its paces around the road-course and down the quarter-mile strip. It is really great to see a car like this built, and used for its intended purpose. Much like power from the factory so AJ left them well enough alone, but upgraded the pads, rotors, and brake lines for good measure. The interior and exterior remained largely unchanged. The stock C6Z body-lines are already gorgeous from the factory. AJ did add his own personal touch by tinting all of the windows and smoking the tail light lenses. On the inside, to match the factory how thoroughbred horse trainers train their next derby winner, AJ continually turns out top-notch Corvettes, and much like his old C5 this C6Z is for sale. Despite the all the work he's just recently put into it, AJ never holds onto a car too long. What's next is anyone's guess, but my money would be on what AJ knows best...another Corvette.

car starting with a brand new long-block from GM. With the new motor assembled it was time to pile on the go-fast goodies. A custom-grind Comp Cam along with stage 2 heads from WCCH were added along with Kooks 1 7/8 headers, 3 x-pipe, and a stock exhaust with Mild to Wild cutouts. On the intake side, a Fast 102 intake with a Nick Williams 102 throttle body were added along with an Airaid intake. With these goodies, and some tuning by Doug Rippie, the fresh LS7 belted out 568rwhp and 494rwtq.

ive weeks into the season, things at Buffalo River Race Park are looking good. Car count is up from last year, averaging about 100 each Sunday night. Spectator count hovers around 1200-1400 but has been as high as 1750. I said it before and I will say it again, If you build it, they will come.

Racing has been competitive and the track has been excellent, says speedway race director Duane Peterson. Drivers have been able to run on the top, middle or bottom which is really important. With the A/C cranked, 2 full bars, bathrooms and concessions, the new indoor facility continues to be a huge hit. All this is great news to the BRRP team who work hard to make sure each event runs smoothly and everyone leaves with a smile. Along with great weekly racing, BRRP has hosted several special events including a night of mini-sprints, a DMC Motocross event and a stop in the 14th Annual MDA Fun Run. Mini Sprints hit the track on May 7th, thrilling both fans and racers. These front engine, open wheel race cars turn the same

lap times at BRRP as the A-Mods. This traveling series could be racing at BRRP full time in the future. For now, BRRP is planning another five nights of the Mini-Sprints before this season ends.

On Saturday, June 9th, 200 bikes battled 30 mph winds on the motocross track at the DCM series event. Despite the less than optimal conditions, there was some great racing for riders and fans. Kelly and the crew from DMC posted on their website, It was really fun to try out a new track and facility and thanks to Kevin and crew at the Buffalo River Race Park for sharing your facility with all of us. Link to the events results @ www.dmcmotorsports.com. Later that day, 380 motorcycles rumbled down Hwy 10 and converged on the speedway. It was sight to behold as BRRP hosted the second to the last stop on the 2012 Old

west, including Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Its the first time for late models on the track at BBRP in 8 years, explains Peterson. Its a pretty big deal. The season culminates on September 8th and 9th with the Corn Cob Nationals, featuring A-Mods, B-Mods, Mod 4s, Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Hornets, Pure Stocks and Legends. Each night is its own show (heats and features both nights). Corn feeds will follow races both nights with free corn on the cob for everyone. Peterson says we can look for about 200 cars to converge on BRRP for this popular event.

and on, but the races were held, said staff members. With the cloudy, cool weather, the track was awesome. What was to be a triple-header weekend (Motocross, MDA run and Sunday night races) was cut short by our ever-unpredictable Minnesota weather as rain poured down and Sunday races were cancelled. But even the rain cant dampen the spirits of the staff at BRRP, as they look forward their biggest events of the season. On August 12th BRRP will host the Northern Late Model Racing Associations (NLRA) Late Model Specials. This touring series draws racers from all over the Mid-

Theres still a lot of race season left and Peterson and Rivers are not resting on their laurels after the success of the first 5 weeks. Director of sales and marketing, Brad Rivers, said BRRP was happy to help sponsor the event that raised $6,900 to send children with Muscular Dystrophy to camp. Being part of the MDA run also gave people a chance to see all the improvements at the race park. I personally spoke with several people who had not been at BBRP since back in the day when there was only outdoor grandstand seating, port-a-potties and a small concession stand. Everyone I talked to was impressed, to say the least. Following the DMC MX event, BRRP pulled of their own series MX race. Despite the iffy weather, 100 racers showed up to race on Sunday morning. raveling along Highway 3 about 30 miles northeast of Waterloo Iowa, I drove past a unique business which caught my attention. Here in the Heartland of rural Iowa was a modern building with boats inside and out which was appropriately named Heartland Marine. I just had to turn around and go back to find out how a Marine Business can survive with no water located in the immediate area.

Walking in the door, my questions would soon be answered. Tricia Arends greeted me with a friendly smile and asked if she could help. I told her I was curious about their location being in the middle of rich Iowa farmland, and wanted to know more about their business.

Service and bay area for rigging and repair.

If first impressions mean anything, you would be impressed. The showroom is well stocked with fully rigged boats and accessories for just about anything you would need on the water. They sell G3 fishing & G3 Sun Catcher Pontoon boats in addition to Palm Beach Pontoon Boats powered by Honda and Yamaha outboard motors, Mercrusier stern drives and motors. You will also find a large selection of used boats and motors to choose from. So what is the key to surviving these days and maintaining a marine business located in Northeast Iowa surrounded by corn fields? Well, take into consideration both Harry and Tricia Arends have been in operation at their present location since

1998. Harry alone has over 40 years experience in the boating business which plays a major factor to the equation. In addition they have factory-trained technicians to perform service work on most makes of outboard and stern drive boats & motors. But most important they are dedicated to serving customers from Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Dubuque, Davenport, Iowa City, Oelwein, Waterloo, Waverly and the entire state of Iowa. Heartland Marine is located at Junction Hwy 3 and V62 just south of Sumner, Iowa and can be reached by phone at 319-6383040.

remember the day I met Breanna, her long red hair, big smile, and sweet personality. I thought she was at the track to cheer on another racer. All of a sudden I hear them call the trophy class to staging, and off she went in her Grand Am, the same car she had driven there. With a smile and nod I waved and continued prepping my car.
Find us on Facebook Wheels of Thunder July 2012

Over the intercom I listened as the drivers paired up and tried to run each other down. Then, I hear a female name announced, not something common at the track, so I stopped and walked to the fence to watch. She lined up against her competitor at the tree, the lights dropped, and off she went. She got the head start, and as she got closer to the end I hear myself say, "Brake, hit the brakes." Her competitor crept closer and ended up pushing her over the finish line faster than she had chosen as her dial-in, causing her to 'break out'; the win light went to the other racer. Now had that been me, I would have come back upset, but as I saw her return to her parking place she crawled out of her car still smiling. Later that day I was able to speak with her and asked how her lights were, just to open conversation. She politely said they could use some work, but had a great time that day, and would be back the next. At that moment I knew I had found someone who truly just loved the sport and even though you could tell she was a little disappointed in how her performance had been, it would push her to get the win the next time. It was something I couldn't quite explain. As weekends came and went we became closer and I saw this small town girl from North Dakota grow into a track champion! Breanna has been around cars her whole life, but it wasn't until she was 'gently forced' to attend a NHRA National event in Brainerd, MN when she was 14 that

changed her forever. I couldn't help but to laugh at the thought of her telling me she was practically 'forced' to go and wasn't happy...this is because if you see her there now, you will find her with red cheeks and tears rolling down her face from the 'nitro' burn on Nitro Alley. You watch her as she turns around with a smile and walks to the next Pro pit anxious for the next car to light up! She is the only female I know who goes to as many 'nitro burns' up and down Nitro Alley during the National events that she can possible get to throughout the weekend. For the next couple of years after her first time seeing the Pros she was mentally getting prepared to tackle the 1/4 mile track herself. Finally at age 16 she was able to take her first attempt as a racer. She remembers it well; May 2004 at Interstate Dragways (now Top End Drag ways) in her 18 second Grand Am, shaking during the entire pass! As the years have progressed so have her

skills. She has tried her hand behind the wheel of six different makes and models, starting with her '88 Grand Am, to a '72 Dodge Dart, an '03 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, the '78 Chevrolet Silverado, her pink '85 Chevrolet Camaro, and now her current; an '80 Chevrolet Monza Spyder. Her ET has also changed over the years from the 18 second stroll to her 11 second Monza. You wouldn't realize it meeting her, but because of her natural competitive nature, these progressions are all a part of her becoming the best she can. She has taken her time, learning the feel and attitude of each vehicle she puts on the line. It has all been worth it for Breanna. In just her second year of racing she received the 'Most Improved Driver Award', and since then has won the points championship the

your win light come on, which is the best feeling ever!" When I asked her who is her biggest supporter, it came as no surprise when she answered, her Dad, Brad. "He's my crew chief, my mentor, my support system and my biggest fan. I couldn't do any of this without him." I've met Brad, and I can say first hand this is without a doubt a man who is completely there because he enjoys it and enjoys seeing his daughter doing what she loves. When Breanna isn't going rounds, she is the first to admit she is pretty 'girly', loves going out with her friends, and shopping, but I warn you now...don't let her fool you. If you see that long, red hair, and a big bright smile...she's only reeling you in to put you on back on the trailer! last two years. She won the National Dragster Challenge the past two years, which gave her two Wally's for her collection of achievements. Being high in the points has allowed her to race at three Division 5 Finals and compete in the Race of Champions at last year's final. Even though this young lady left Fordville, ND, graduated from NDSU (North Dakota State University) with a degree in Elementary Education, and is currently working as a lead teacher, she has no plans to stop racing! She has a heart of gold and is adored by children because of her gentle nature, but when it comes to side by side racing...she's in it to win it! She says, "From the burnout to the brakes, it's all amazing, but the best it gets is when it's a really close race and you see

he 2012 IWA season campaign began with a bang in 2012 with consecutive events in Moose Lake, MN on June 2nd and 3rd and Brainerd, MN on June 9th and 10th. Blessed with 2 weekends of beautiful summer weather, the IWA racing faithful took to the water for 2 spectacular shows.

The story of the season so far has been the domination of young sensation David Fischer. David took home top honors in 3 classes during both of the weekends including the Mod Drags, Stock 800 Drags, and Semi- Pro Stock Ovals as well as 7th and 4th place finishes in Semi-Pro Open Ovals. large Moose Lake crowd. In Brainerd, it was Nick Gustafson of Roseau, MN taking the top spot in Semi-Pro Open. Racing in just his second full year of competition, Nick has become a dominant force in the Semi-Pro Open class and looks to be the front runner in the season points race for the class. In the Pro-Stock Oval class in Moose Lake it was the Arctic Cat of Dale Lindbeck setting the pace all weekend long, going undefeated during the weekend en route to the big Pro-Stock win. Dale had the much coveted lane 1 for the final and used it to his advantage, closing the door to anyone who might try to turn underneath him in the first corner. Chad Maki made a move to try to take the spot away, but there simply wasnt enough room leaving spectators with the rare sight of young Mr. Maki bobbing in Moose Lake for the remainder of the final. Maki would get his redemption in Round 2 at Brainerd International Raceway though, taking his Danner Sales SkiDoo to victory with Dale Lindbeck hot on his tail all the way to the finish. In the premier Pro Open class, it has simply been The Chad Maki Show since the green flag has dropped this season. Chad has been a dominant force during the opening 2 events of the 2012 season. formance machine. Zurn passed Maki during the 3rd lap to take the lead in the race and was pulling away from Maki when he hit a huge wave that would eventually get his belt wet and mark the end of an impressive run. The machine that Zurn is piloting this year is an innovative design that he built with the motor reversed in the chassis. The design puts more of the weight of the machine to the right side (the direction we turn at IWA events). Zurn definitely has the fastest machine on the course and if he can figure out how to keep it dry, he is going to be my odds-on favorite at the upcoming World Championship Watercross in Grantsburg, WI, July 20-22.

ts been a long climb for drag racer Dean Dubbin from Top Dragster to the Top Alcohol Dragster ranks, but he's finally there. Now Dubbin, who made a career of qualifying No. 1 or close to it when he competed in Top Dragster, is in the deep end of the pool. "Top Alcohol Dragster has been a little harder than I thought it would be," he said. "We went to Indy last spring to upgrade my license, and I figured that would be it, but on the first run, the injector failed. The blower straps got sucked down inside of the blower and basically destroyed it and bent all the valves. When I got out at the end of the track, the blower-restraint buckles were hanging out of the headers, and it completely destroyed the rotors and gouged up the case."

Things got better in a hurry for Dubbin, who this year is running the most aggressive schedule of his career, including a stop at Tri-State Raceway in Earlville, Iowa, for the big Lucas Oil Series event there Sept.79. It's a week after the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the most prestigious event in drag racing, and is expected to draw top cars from around the U.S. and Canada. In his national event debut last year at his hometown race, the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, all Dubbin did was defeat No. 1 qualifier Bill Reichert in the first round and advance to the semifinals. Reichert, who had won five NHRA championships in a row, red-lighted, advancing Dubbin, whose unique drivetrain setup led directly to the champ's uncharacteristic foul start. With an automatic

enough time' and I did a short burnout and tried to hurry up there as fast as I could. As soon as Bill pre-staged, I rolled right into the stage beam. Then he staged, and when I put the engine on the two-step, he was gone." In a 14-car field, seven drivers win the first round, which means that someone is getting a bye in the quarterfinals. It's usually the No. 1 qualifier's reward for being faster than the other 13 drivers, but since Dubbin had taken out No. 1, he got the single. All of a sudden, he was in the semifinals of the first national event of his Top Alcohol Dragster career. "It was almost unreal," said Dubbin, who fell in the semi's to eventual runner-up Mark Taliaferro but not before drilling Taliaferro on the Tree with a near-perfect .004 reaction time. The .004 was one of nine .00s Dubbin racked up last year. "I don't know where they came from," said Dubbin, 49, of Royalton, Minn., who runs Dubbin Motorsports Products, a company that specializes in awnings. "I don't think I had nine .00 lights the whole time I raced in Top Dragster." One thing he did have a lot of was No. 1 qualifying spots. Those

might be a little harder to come by now that he's competing in Top Alcohol Dragster, the third-fastest class in drag racing behind only the fire-breathing Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars of the NHRA Full Throttle tour. "This car is a lot faster than the Top Dragster was," said Dubbin, who thanked AOK Engines of Motley, Minn., Paul Lair of Engineered Seals Components in Spencer, Iowa, and Goodson Tools & Supplies of Winona, Minn. "Downtrack is where you notice it the most. From half-track on, a Top Dragster is almost like a Super Comp car it doesn't pick up that much speed. They say that after you get used to it, a Top Alcohol car doesn't seem to pull that hard after half-track either, but it still feels fast to me. I used to go 230-235 mph with the Top Dragster and that was when he had it really tuned up. This thing is going almost 260, and you really notice the difference." Dubbin is still learning every time out, and with an automatic transmission instead of the traditional clutch setup employed by an overwhelming majority of his more experienced opponents, he definitely hasn't taken the easy route. "When you're running an automatic-transmission car like this, there's so much torque, and you have to get rid of it early in the run," he said. "You can't just take weight off the clutch like everybody else does; you have to do it with timing, and it takes a while to figure it all out. I've wanted to run this class for probably eight years now, and a medical issue a few years ago convinced me that now is the time. After all those years of being the No. 1 qualifier in Top Dragster I'm an underdog now, but I'm in the game."

transmission, the driver slams the throttle to the floor as soon as both drivers are staged, and Reichert, unaccustomed to hearing his opponent's engine rev so high, took off before the Christmas Tree was activated. Dubbin considered himself lucky just to make it to the line in time to race. "The blower basically hydraulicked when we tried to start the car, and I thought we were done right there," he said. "Mike Strasburg realized what happened, ran over to get a breaker bar, and backed down the engine in time for us to restart. I really have to give him kudos and Reichert, too, for being such a good sport and giving us extra time. The whole time they were trying to get the car started, I was telling myself, 'We've got enough time, we've got

The Lakeland Communications team of Todd Roehm, Sheri Thorsbakken, and Kris Opitz have worked openly with St. Croix Valley Raceway and are commenting on early excitement among customers and businesses in the area who are beginning to form and promote weekly viewing parties of the rebroadcast. The May 25 Davey Tabor Memorial for the winged UMSS sprints provided some exciting action. You can follow all the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series action at www.umsprints.com. This first of its kind event featuring two divisions of open wheel sprint cars and modifieds will be featured in detail next issue. Changing the Fork Oil on your Harley

One often overlooked maintenance item with bikes, especially heavy cruisers, is the fork oil. Just like any other type of oil, it breaks down over time and requires a change. While I dont think it needs to be done as much as your engine oil, its something that I prefer to do at least once a season to ensure that the bike has easy, predictable handling. Most newer Harleys have drain and fill plugs that make this task very easy to do. Open the drain plug and be prepared to collect the draining fluid then open the fill plug to aid in venting. I always push the forks through their entire stroke to make sure all the old oil is pushed out before putting new oil in. If you reference your owners manual or visit your Harley dealer, you can find the exact OEM replacement oil for your bike. There are also many varieties of aftermarket fork oil that work well. I prefer to use Amsoils Shock Therapy #10 (medium) weight oil. On most older models, the process is a little more difficult as it requires you to disassemble the fork sliders. If you have access to the proper tools and a good service manual, you can still handle the task on your own. If this is out of your comfort zone, there are many qualified service shops and dealerships that can help you with this. Ive seen and heard of people using all kinds of different oils in forks from hydraulic pump oil to Automatic Transmission Fluid. I cant stress enough how important it is to use oil that is designed for suspensions and not substitute other products. Yes, it might cost a little bit more but when it comes to having your bike respond correctly and consistently to the input of the rider, its never a good idea to cut corners. Hopefully youve been able to enjoy some of the nice early summer weather we are having here in the Midwest! Have fun on that bike and stay safe out there!

the ATV and yourself, bring an extra spark plug and some tools and always remember to bring a tow strap. You never know when something can break or go wrong, or you may meet up with someone in need. If you like to play, some trails do have great mud holes. Remember to have a change of clothes back in your vehicle in case you do find a mud hole to play in. It is also good to bring something with for a flat tire. On the Flambeau Trail System you will find sixty miles of trails, you will come across two different camp grounds. The first campground is south of Hwy 70 and the area the parking lot is located. The campground is Sailor Lake Campground and is State Owned and is open to tents, campers and RVs. The ATV trail goes right into the Campground where when riding is a good place to stop and relax, sit by the lake, have a cold drink, or even go for a swim at their beach. This is also an excellent place to camp for the

I have written about my travels on snowmobile and motorcycle I figured I would now write about ATV trails in Wisconsin. I know that Minnesota does have some great trails however, I have not had the opportunity to travel on these yet. For now thats all I am able to write about are my Wisconsin adventures. Wisconsin does have many trails through out the state but I usually keep my riding to the Northwoods. I was raised in the Phillips area which is Price County. Price County does have a lot of trails and does connect with the surrounding counties. One location my dad and I have traveled on a lot is off of Hwy 70 in Fifield. A few miles East of Fifield is a parking area to unload the ATVs for the day or several days. This happens to be Chequameon National Forest. The Forest Services does require a small fee for you to leave your vehicle, and there is a drop box with envelopes located near the entrance. Also, remember that your ATVs do need to be registered and some trails do require trail passes. Trail maps are sometimes available at the check in area of this park. Some important things to remember when you are preparing for a trip with your ATV and this is all from experience. Bring extra fuel for

week or weekend and start your riding from your camp site to the trail. Forest road 139, just off of Hwy 70 will take you directly to Sailer Lake by vehicle. We start off on trail 102 heading south to trail 121, which will lead into Sailer Lake. Follow trail 121 back north toward Hwy 70 and once you cross Hwy 70 you will intersect with trail 101. Trail 101 will take you back to the original parking area if you head west. Otherwise you can go east and follow trail 101 which leads into several other intersecting trails. Eventually you will have completed the circle and end up at the parking area. Keep in mind that some trails do not connect, after a few miles they end and you have to return on the same trail. The second campground is north of Hwy 70 and is named Smith Rapids Campground; this campground is a very short hike off the

trail. The campground is road accessible, Forest Road 148 and is mainly used by canoers and riding horses. When your in this

area of the trail you do have to watch out for horses crossing the ATV Trail. Here you will also find the Smith Rapids Covered Bridge, which was built in 1991 and is the only covered bridge in Wisconsin that has been built with glue laminated town lattice. This campground is also located on the South Fork of the Flambeau River, so if you do go there bring a fishing pole. The Smith Rapids Campground is located on trail 112, which is off trail 101 and just west of trails 101 and 121 as mentioned previously. This trail does offer some great riding and if its raining hard or in the spring there are some flooded areas. They are usually easy to get through, just take your time, put your feet up and enjoy. And once you go through it, Im going to guess you will go back through it again and probably a little faster. One year when we were on the trail it was flooded for a distance of about one quarter mile. I went through several times and I even talked my dad into going through several times. As we move over to Sawyer County and park our vehicles off of County Road W one mile east of Connors Lake. The trail head is on Tower Hill Road at the intersections of County Roads W and M. From here we can adventure north on the ATV Trails into the Flambeau River State Forest and travel forty miles of trail. We will be headed toward Hwy 70 near Oxbo and the North Fork of the Flambeau River. This trail is a lot more ATV worthy with hills, large rocks in the path, and even some washouts to cross over. While on this trail pay attention and you most likely will see a bear or at least fresh sign that a bear was on the trail. It is
July 2012

not uncommon to see several deer and other wildlife. This trail will give you and your ATV a workout but I guarantee it will be worth it. Once you get in the area of Hwy 70 you will come across the Tuscobia Trail. A short ride over to Oxbo and the North Fork of the Flambeau River you will find a tavern with fuel, food and beverages. This is a great place to stop and relax. You will also find great camping spots at Connors Lake. A little west of Connors Lake is the Big Bear Lodge, here you will have to try their famous roasted duck and wild rice dressings as you overlook the beautiful sights of the Flambeau River. My next place that I love to ride is from Birchwood, WI. and this is also where I like to get on the Tuscobia Trail. I like to head east out of Birchwood and enjoy the scenery. It is here that you will find plenty of deer and other wildlife. I love going on this trail during partridge season. With our shotguns in our attached ATV scabbards we look for the perfect hunting area. We usually come across partridge on the trail and then start our hunt. But if youre not looking for that then the trail is just as fun to ride on. This is generally a well cared for trail and has a lot of hard packed area. But occasionally you will come across areas to play in. We will generally take this trail to Loretta/ Draper, which is in the Chequemegon National Forest. In the Loretta/ Draper area you will be able to find gas, food and drinks. This trail is sixty two miles in length and goes from Birchwood to Park Falls. Both ends do have lodging and great places to eat. Which ever state you choose to go to and whatever trails you want to ride, one rule is always the same. Stay on the designated trail. It is illegal to venture off the trail and make your own little ride, as tempting as that may be; you are only destroying our beautiful forests, and doing damages to the undergrowth. I guarantee you will find play areas right on the trail. The trails are available for all to enjoy so lets keep it that way.

The small and quiet Northeastern city of Volga, Iowa will be filled with smoke and the smell of burning rubber this August when the town welcomes trucks throughout the Midwest. The rules are quite simple; if it has a tailgate, bring it. Tom Lott, who has a passion for trucks, has worked relentlessly to promote this event for the past 3 years. With attendance of over 400 trucks last year, the word is out and Tom is anticipating that number to double for 2012. Working with local and surrounding business owners for sponsorship, Toms goal is to make sure everyone has a safe and fun weekend. A huge truck cruise is planned before the competition starts with Show and Shine display of trucks going on throughout the day. A huge fireworks show will follow in the evening sponsored by Todds Specialized Rigging. The event will take place August 25th and 26th with gates open and open to the public. This year will feature many new events to be announced. Wheels of Thunder Magazine to be on site for full coverage and photo shoot to be published in a later edition. Expect to see some very high horsepower and torque trucks with radical modifications and custom paint designs face off against each other. The Big Boys will Run what they brung.. Just hope they brung enough to win! If you have a truck you are proud of, dont miss out on this opportunity to show it off at The Volga City Truck Cruise!

Tiki Bar
No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem!
n the South Shore of Clear Lake, Iowa there is great little bar and restaurant. The casual dining takes a step back in time and reminds me of childhood memories with my parents staying at a resort in Minnesota. You have your choice of inside seating, with a beautifully decorated dining area, wooden booths overlooking the lake, or request a table outside by the beach.

You will find The Tiki Bar open at 7am every day from mid-May to Labor Day where you can get a hearty meal in before your day starts. A Breakfast Buffet is available on Sunday from7am-1pm. Several kinds of menus are offered from simple sandwiches to Steak and Seafood, with a wide range of prices to suit anyone's budget. A great vacation usually involves happy kids and this place will help you in any way possible...really! I found a kids menu, but better than that, if it's available they will make it. No Problem! Carry out is an option, and when you are on vacation,

there is no need to worry about cooking after a hard day of playing on the lake. You can also request them to deliver dockside to your boat! Imagine that? Wedding Receptions and private parties are unique and your menu should be as special as your day. May, June, July, August or September, Big, small or something in between. Afternoon, evening or an entire weekend, you can choose from several customized wedding packages and party services. Let them custom make a menu for you and your guests. The bar was built in 2007, and I can tell you first hand this one is different! There are two hydraulic cylinders which, with the push of a button opens up the entire side of the bar exposing a "Jimmy Buffet" setting. Is there anything better than a luau on a sandy beach, drinking pina coladas, or a salty lime margarita? You can find great entertainment between May 12th to the end of September. Come have a great time, enjoy a spectacular view, tasty cocktail and live music, on the lawn, in the bar, next to the lake... no problem! This is truly a fun place to meet new friends.

Whether youre a Hot Rod, a Wild Hog, a Chopper or a Spare Tire, head over to Sickies Garage and get your fill of food and fun!
with a few appetizers and sides. The idea is to keep it simple, fresh and fast. The kitchen features new technology cooking equipment that works like a pressalmost like a giant George Foreman grill. It cooks a burger (or chicken breast) in a minute fifteen from fresh, explains Fernholz. So literally you walk in and by the time youre getting your beer, your burger is coming right behind it. Guests can choose hamburger, chicken or steak for any sandwich. So the Sickies Burger (bacon, fried egg, pulled pork, BBQ sauce, American cheese, topped with onion tanglers and a splash of Franks Hot Sauce) may actually be a Sickies Chicken Sandwich or Sickies Steak Sandwich. There is a kids menu with choices of miniburgers (Lil Lug Nutz), boneless wings or grilled cheese. Dont forget to order the old fashioned malt I mentioned earlier! If youre looking for a mechanic, Sickies Garage is not the place to go. However, if youre looking for a handmade burger and cold beer (or old fashioned malt for the under 21 gang) then Sickies the newest place to get your fix in Fargo. I sat down with managing partner Kerry Fernholz to get the scoop on Sickies and see for myself what it was all about. We talked about the June 8th grand opening which had people lined up around the buildPage 78

ing for a meet and greet with Charlie Hunnam who plays Jax Teller on the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy. As an added bonus, everyone who came through the restaurant that day received a free ticket to a performance by Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats later that evening at the Venue at the Hub. The response was, and is, very positive, says Fernholz. People really like the space, the food and the big beer selection. The menu is simple, burgers and sandwiches

Sickies is the first place in Fargo to offer tableside taps. Yes, its just what it sounds like; beer taps right at your booth. Fernholz explained that the concept has been around for a couple of years but not a lot of places have it. This is not an all you can drink beer buffet (sorry to burst your bubble). The taps electronically track how many ounces customers drink and servers charge accordingly. With 50 brews to choose from, guests can get a basic Budweiser or choose from several

craft beers on tap. For those who like a stout, Fernholz suggests you try Sickies own Oil Slick Stout (brewed by Boulevard). Whatever your preference, there is something on tap to suite it. With all the talk about the tableside taps and the extensive beer selection, it can be easy to forget this is not a bar. Fernholz wants to make sure that people know this is a family friendly place. First and foremost this is a restaurant. Kids are welcome until 9 pm. We want to see families coming in and enjoying the food and special events. Currently, Sickies is hosting car/bike shows the fourth Thursday of each month (until winter rears its ugly head). Like the restaurant, the shows are family friendly. Kids can hang out with their parents, check out the machines and vote for their favorites to win prizes. Before winding up our interview, I had to ask Fernholz about the name Sickies. I had read on their Facebook page about the name being a nod to Sick Boy Motorcycles (an apparel and accessory brand of merchandise). He explained that the two are separate companies but do have a licensing agreement that allows them to offer some pretty cool swag, both in the store and online. Its a unique line of merchandise and fun stuff with different sayings, all kind of tongue in cheek. Sickies is located at 25th Street and 9th Ave SW in Fargo (adjacent to the Hub entertainment venue) or stop by the speedway at Buffalo River Race Park on Sunday night and visit Sickies trackside bar. Coming this summer: Sickies Garage, Sturgis. Just in time for the 2012 bike rally Sickies will open in the location of what is currently the Broken Spoke, next to the Sturgis Saloon Company.
