Ignite CHARLOTTE 5: Ready, Set, 5! | Event Info & Date Released Charlotte, NC - August 2, 2012 | Ever had an event that gave you different topics by awesome speakers while enlightening you and making it quick? The geeky infused 5 minute talks known as Ignite Charlotte comes back to the Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa on Tuesday, September 25th! Ready to ignite you even more for a 5th round! The event is partially inspired by PechaKucha Nights, the first Ignite series started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest, Technology Evangelist for OReilly Media, and Bre Pettis of Makerbot.com, formerly of MAKE Magazine. The Ignite series now has a major worldwide footprint, ranging from Seattle, to the UK, Germany, Asia, and now Ignite made another home in Charlotte. Bridget B. Sullivan, business owner and independent event producer, works with a team of volunteers to stage two events a year. Ignite Charlotte made its first appearance in August 2010, with a crowd in excess of 200 people. Each cycle of Ignite has allowed it to grow more and more- enlightening the community members of the Queen City. What is different about Ignite? The Talks. The Ignite talks are meant to spark creativity, passion, conversation, and action in cities across the world. And for the past four rounds, Ignite Charlotte has been doing just that with an array of topics and speakers. From geeks to politicos, Ignite Charlotte has talks to illuminate all in attendance. Sticking with the mantra, Enlighten us, but make it quick!, Ignite Charlotte 5 speakers will use 20 slides that autoadvance every 15 seconds giving them a talk time of just 5 minutes. The event will highlight speakers from the Charlotte community, an icebreaker contest will be held before the talks, and networking will go on before, at the break and after the last speaker. Related videos are found on its website. The submission date for speakers ended on July 25, with speakers being notified of selection July 28-August 4. We expect that the speakers will be nothing short of excellent, and will far exceed the foundation of what Ignite Charlotte has experienced in the past. Ignite Charlotte 5 will be back September 25, 2012 at the Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa! The event is open to all free of charge, ages 18 and up. FACT SHEET Enlighten us, but make it quick! What is Ignite? | History Ignite is a fast-paced geek event started by Brady Forrest, Technology Evangelist for O'Reilly Media, and Bre Pettis of Makerbot.com, formerly of MAKE Magazine. Speakers are given 20 slides, each shown for 15 seconds, giving each speaker 5 minutes of fame. The first Ignite took place in Seattle in 2006, and since then the event has become an international phenomenon, with gatherings in Helsinki, Finland; Paris, France; New York, New York; Charlotte, and many other locations. Ignite Charlotte was founded in August 2010 by co-founders: Bridget B. Sullivan and Sam Fagan with Bridget B. Sullivan taking full ownership and an executive producer role in 2011. Why Ignite? The idea is pretty simple: you put a dozen or so creative, technically savvy, artistically capable, gutsy and motivated people into one room and let them talk about any topic possible for 5 minutes. Each of them gives a little insight into their lives, their passion or their ideas during their time on stage. And in order to prevent the talks from getting too boring, some standards were put in place whereby every talk must consist of 20 slides; each slide displayed for 15 seconds changing automatically, yep slides change automatically. -Ignite Hamburg, Germany

Ignite Charlotte stages both an Icebreaker contest, where people make things, and a series of 5 minutes talks, where presenters get 20 slides and five minutes to make their point.
