Test Drive: 2013 BMW X1

The BMW X1

ACCEPT NO COMPROMISES

ouve probably heard this from a well-meaning elder: Life is about compromises. at may be true when it comes to deciding who does the dishes, but it is no longer true when it comes to the family vehicle. It turns out you dont have to choose between cutting-edge features and family-friendly functionality, fuel economy and performance, or safety and jaw-dropping good looks. You can have it all in with the 2013 BMW X1. e X1 is the smallest member of BMWs Sport-Activity line, and although it has been a popular o ering in Europe for several years, it is brand-new to the U.S. market. e X1 is available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive con gurations, with either a 240 horsepower, 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, or in the case of the test model a powerful 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six. Even with all-wheel drive and the larger engine, the test model still scored a more-than-respectable EPA mileage rating of

18 city/27 highway/21 combined. at economy doesnt come at the cost of performance, though. e X1 muscled its way e ortlessly through acceleration tests. e superior handling of the X1 is matched only by the superior comfort of the interior. e driver and passenger seats seem as if they were custom made for their occupants. Rear-seat passengers enjoy plenty of room, and theres ample cargo space to make the X1 work for a busy family. e test model sported a brand-new color in the BMW line the juicy Valencia Orange. It was also equipped with a Harmon Kardon Surround Sound system, navigation assist, rearview camera and heated seats. Perhaps the nicest feature of all is the tasteful elegance inherent in the BMW line. Both interior and exterior styling is rst class. eres no compromise here and no mistaking the BMW brand, whether youre admiring this beauty as it rolls down the road or soaking in the comforts from the cabin of your very own X1.

Warning Lights Send Messages You Cant Ignore

afety on the road is no accident. For example, when a warning light illuminates on a cars dashboard, it is alerting you to a situation that requires your attention. While not all warning lights are a sign that disaster is imminent, no warning indicator should ever be ignored. ats the word from the experts at AAA, who encourage motorists to read their owners manual and know what each of the warning lights in their vehicle means. To help, AAA o ers the following tips: Oil Pressure Light e oil pressure light is usually an oilcan symbol or the word OIL. It comes on when there is a drop in engine oil pressure. Of all the warning lights, the oil pressure light indicates the greatest potential for serious mechanical damage. If the oil pressure warning light comes on and stays on, pull o the road at the earliest safe opportunity, shut o the engine and call for assistance. Engine Temperature Light e engine temperature light is usually a thermometer symbol or the word TEMP. It comes on when the engine temperature is unsafe for your vehicle. Unless the engine temperature is quickly brought under control, major damage may occur. If there are any signs of a cooling system leak, pull o the road

at the earliest safe opportunity, shut o the engine and call for assistance. Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Charging System Light e charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word ALT or GEN. It comes on when the vehicles electrical system is no longer receiving power from the alternator. If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio, heater or air conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately for further inspection. Check Engine Light e check engine light comes on when there is a problem a ecting the vehicles exhaust emissions. If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. If the check engine light begins ashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is overheating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis. Disregarding a ashing check engine light could start a re, destroy the catalytic converter and result in necessary repairs.

Winter Driving Options

Q: A:

The Lincoln Story

Which vehicle option packages should I consider for winter driving?

Fortunately for those of us who have to confront Midwestern winters, todays advances in automotive technology have produced some amazing and convenient new cold-weather features: electronic stability systems, winter transmission modes, heated seats, steering wheels, wipers and side mirrors, headlight washers and remote starts, just to name a few. To learn more about the vehicles that deliver these options and more, and to make your winter driving a little more comfortable, visit a Joe Machens Dealership today.

Q: A:

Are Lincoln vehicles named in honor of Abraham Lincoln?

Its true. Named after his boyhood hero, our 16th president, the Lincoln Motor Co. was established in 1917 by Henry Leland, an automotive parts manufacturer, with the initial purpose of building aircraft engines. After World War I, he retooled his factories to make luxury automobiles, but soon ran into dire straits. In 1922, Ford Motor Co. purchased Lincoln.
