Giving Thanks
here did the year go? It feels like just yesterday that we were welcoming 2012, then, seemingly in an instant, sweltering through a brutal summer. Now it is November, and as we welcome the beginning of the holiday season, one cant help but look back at what was, and be so very thankful. For all of us at Joe Machens Dealerships, that grateful sentiment will always lie foremost with you, our loyal customers. Aside from the splendors of anksgiving, this month brings the end of daylight saving time on Nov. 4, an important election on Nov. 6, and a much-deserved day to salute our veterans on Nov. 11. at Veterans Day Sunday is also the day of the Tunnel To Towers Run, presented by the Columbia Professional Fire ghters to honor the heroes of 9/11. Funds raised will help build a Smart Home for local soldier Tyler Hu man, who was seriously injured in Afghanistan. And make plans to attend Go Further With Ford Night, Nov. 15, at Joe Machens Ford Lincoln and Joe Machens Capital City Ford Lincoln. Stop by and record a quick tryout as an American Idol judge. You could win a trip to American Idol in Los Angeles, or an all-new 2013 Ford Fusion. Plus, well give money to a local charity with every
entry. Register online today at www.GoFurtherwithFordNight.com. November marks a momentous occasion for the Joe Machens family as well: the long-anticipated opening of our new Volkswagen store. We are so very pleased to bring this proud franchise back to mid-Missouri. And a nal, friendly reminder: With sleet, snow and slush soon upon us, please take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is safe for winter travel. Our service departments are ready to make you good to go. Have a happy, healthy anksgiving with friends and family. And as always, I hope you enjoy this months issue of Machens Advantage. How long have you worked for the Joe Machens Dealerships? I have been employed with Joe Machens for eight years. What brought you to Columbia? My wife works for State Farm Insurance and we moved to Columbia for her job. What do you like to do for fun? For fun and recreation, I enjoy bowling, pool and motorcycle riding. Accomplishment you are most proud of: is past June, I sold 36 cars. at was an all-time monthly record for Joe Machens Toyota. I am quite proud of that. Youd never guess that I have a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Why Im proud to be a liated with the Joe Machens Dealerships: I am familiar with the other car dealers around town and they do not care about their salespeople like Joe Machens Dealerships does. e Machens reputation is what led me here and has kept me here. Your rst car: My rst vehicle was a 1965 Chevy pickup truck.
What do you like to do for fun? Boating at the Lake of the Ozarks is the main thing I like to do for fun. Accomplishment you are most proud of: When I was in my 20s, I was invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic team in kayaking. Unfortunately, later that year, the Olympic committee decided to drop that sport. Youd never guess that I am thankful each and every day for God being in my life! Why Im proud to be a liated with the Joe Machens Dealerships: I enjoy being part of an organization that puts customers as its top priority and makes sure that they are well taken care of before, during and after the sale. Your rst car: My rst car was a 1970 MGB. It was British racing green, with black interior and spoke wheels!

The BMW X1
ACCEPT NO COMPROMISES
ouve probably heard this from a well-meaning elder: Life is about compromises. at may be true when it comes to deciding who does the dishes, but it is no longer true when it comes to the family vehicle. It turns out you dont have to choose between cutting-edge features and family-friendly functionality, fuel economy and performance, or safety and jaw-dropping good looks. You can have it all in with the 2013 BMW X1. e X1 is the smallest member of BMWs Sport-Activity line, and although it has been a popular o ering in Europe for several years, it is brand-new to the U.S. market. e X1 is available in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive con gurations, with either a 240 horsepower, 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine, or in the case of the test model a powerful 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline six. Even with all-wheel drive and the larger engine, the test model still scored a more-than-respectable EPA mileage rating of
18 city/27 highway/21 combined. at economy doesnt come at the cost of performance, though. e X1 muscled its way e ortlessly through acceleration tests. e superior handling of the X1 is matched only by the superior comfort of the interior. e driver and passenger seats seem as if they were custom made for their occupants. Rear-seat passengers enjoy plenty of room, and theres ample cargo space to make the X1 work for a busy family. e test model sported a brand-new color in the BMW line the juicy Valencia Orange. It was also equipped with a Harmon Kardon Surround Sound system, navigation assist, rearview camera and heated seats. Perhaps the nicest feature of all is the tasteful elegance inherent in the BMW line. Both interior and exterior styling is rst class. eres no compromise here and no mistaking the BMW brand, whether youre admiring this beauty as it rolls down the road or soaking in the comforts from the cabin of your very own X1.
STICKER STATS: STARTING MSRP: $30,650 FOR sDRIVE 28i MODEL (TEST MODEL: $49,220) FUEL ECONOMY: 34 MPG HIGHWAY (sDRIVE 28i); 27 MPG HIGHWAY (xDRIVE 35i)

Car Care
at the earliest safe opportunity, shut o the engine and call for assistance. Be careful when opening the hood in the presence of steam, and never remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Charging System Light e charging system light is usually a battery symbol or the word ALT or GEN. It comes on when the vehicles electrical system is no longer receiving power from the alternator. If this light comes on, shut down all unnecessary electrical loads such as the radio, heater or air conditioning, then drive the vehicle to a repair facility immediately for further inspection. Check Engine Light e check engine light comes on when there is a problem a ecting the vehicles exhaust emissions. If the light comes on and stays on, make an appointment with an auto repair shop to have the problem checked in the near future. If the check engine light begins ashing repeatedly, the catalytic converter is overheating. Should this occur, drive the vehicle to a repair shop immediately for further diagnosis. Disregarding a ashing check engine light could start a re, destroy the catalytic converter and result in necessary repairs.

Its true. Named after his boyhood hero, our 16th president, the Lincoln Motor Co. was established in 1917 by Henry Leland, an automotive parts manufacturer, with the initial purpose of building aircraft engines. After World War I, he retooled his factories to make luxury automobiles, but soon ran into dire straits. In 1922, Ford Motor Co. purchased Lincoln.
