World coffee production for 2012/13 is forecast at a record 148 million bags, up 10 million
from the previous year. Half the gain is attributed to Brazils Arabica crop entering the onyear of the biennial production cycle, while record Robusta harvests in Brazil and Vietnam
are also expected to contribute to the growth. As a result, world exports are forecast 7
million bags higher to 115 million, largely on the strength of these two countries. World
consumption is forecast to rise 3 million bags to 142 million on steady expansion in most
countries. Although ending stocks are forecast 3 million bags higher to 27 million,
supplies remain tight.

due primarily to the Arabica

the biennial production cycle.
Whereas previous cycles
grew steadily, this year it is
40
forecast slightly below the
last cycle due to frost damage
30
and dry conditions in Minas
Gerais, its main growing
region. The Robusta harvest

majority is grown. Over half
Arabica

of the additional supply is
expected to augment exports, with the rest going to modest gains in consumption and stocks.

Colombias production is
Colombias Production to Remain Weak
forecast at 7.5 million bags,

equal to the previous year
and 5.0 million bags lower
than the 2007/08 pre-crisis

level. Growing conditions
are expected to remain poor
10
as problems persist related
to the coffee cherry borer

and rust. Also, the ongoing
tree renovation program has
6
the near-term effect of
lowering output until these
trees reach maturity.

Vietnams production is forecast at a record 22.4 million bags, up 1.4 million based on a combination of
favorable growing conditions and an increase in fruit-bearing area. In the last five years, coffee area has
increased nearly 15 percent and many of these trees are now bearing fruit. As a precursor to future
production potential, recent high prices have encouraged farmers to continue expanding area. Bean
exports are forecast 1.0 million bags higher to 20.0 million, with ending stocks marginally rebuilt.
Consumption is forecast to continue rising as the coffee culture spreads.

Indonesias Production and Exports to Rebound

12
10
Million 60 Kilogram Bags

Indonesias production is
forecast at 9.7 million bags, a
rebound of 1.4 million with
favorable growing conditions,
whereas the previous two
harvests suffered from
excessive rainfall. The forecast
falls short of the record
2009/10 harvest because coffee
area has declined over 5
percent as higher prices for
cocoa, rubber, and palm oil
encouraged substitution. Bean
exports are forecast at 6.1
million bags.

Indias production is forecast
Production
Bean Exports
to slip 200,000 bags to 5.1
million on expectations that
conditions return to normal, following last years ideal weather, which lead to a record harvest. Whereas
production ten years ago was nearly evenly split, Robusta now accounts for almost 70 percent. Robusta is
less labor intensive and offers better disease resistance, so growers are gradually replacing older Arabica
trees. Bean exports are forecast steady at 4.0 million bags for the third consecutive year. High prices
encouraged exports, lowering
consumption and stocks.
Honduras Expands Central American Production

Million 60 Kilogram Bags

Central Americas production is

forecast at 14.0 million bags, up
nearly 1.0 million primarily on
expectations of another record
crop in Honduras, though El
Salvadors modest recovery from
storm damage will also
contribute. Honduras is the only
country in the region that has
expanded in the last five years, as
favorable policies by the
National Coffee Institute
encourage farmers to increase
inputs and plantings. The
regions bean exports are forecast
at 12.8 million, up 1.0 million.

Sub-Saharan Africas production is forecast to rise nearly 1 million bags to 17.2 million, with half the
gains attributed to Cote d'Ivoire and Ethiopia. Cote d'Ivoires market and policies are expected to return
to normal following last years political upheaval that resulted in a coffee export ban for several months
and disrupted the harvest. Ethiopia is forecast slightly higher on favorable rains and a good bloom.
Ethiopias coffee sector was briefly interrupted in December when the government announced a policy
requiring coffee to be exported in containers instead of traditional 60 kilogram bags, but the measure was
quickly overturned. The regions bean exports are forecast almost 1 million bags higher to 12.8 million as
production gains are exported.
