Approximately 600 area ath-
letes traveled to Camp Ockanick-
on to test their physical and men-
tal strength on Saturday, Oct. 27,
in the third ABF Mud Run.
Owner of Above and Beyond
Fitness, and personal trainer and
nutritionist, Chad Mason, created
the mud race to challenge dedi-
cated mudders all while donat-
ing to charity.
I used to do a lot of charity
work for multiple organizations. I
wanted to find a local organiza-
tion that we could help, said
Mason. Back in 2006, Camp Ock-
anickon had shut down from all
the floods. We raised enough
money to help open the trails
camp back up.
Fifty percent of the proceeds
collected from the mud run were
donated directly to the camp to
benefit the YMCA programs, as
well as before- and after-school
programs. Additionally, the pro-
ceeds help to send kids to camp
who may not have an opportunity.
According to Mason, 15 kids were
able to attend camp last year
using funds from the run.
Mason runs a cross-fit busi-
ness, which participates in vari-
ous types of mud runs and ex-
treme events in the area.

Course had six water obstacles
every event we do, and make it
our own, said Mason. Most peo-
ple say this event was the hardest,
most physically challenging event
theyve ever done.
The 6.4-mile course contains
six water obstacles, a challenge to
climb up and down large hills
with 50-pound bags of sand,
water logs to walk across and
other hurdles featured to chal-
lenge the athletes.
The best obstacle was the jar-
heads playground, said Sue
Dmochowski, volunteer coordina-
tor. There were nine obstacles in
the area, and it was only counted
as one [in total]. Ive done Tough
Mudders and Ive never seen any-
thing like this. Chad did a lot of
really good things creating this
course.
Other obstacles on the course
included tubes, a rope climb
across a lake, swimming over and
under logs, and the worst, accord-
ing to participants, a 30-foot ice
bath. The bath, was a lined dump-
ster that was full of ice water
complete with a bar to swim
under with barbed wire on top.
The obstacle was prepped with
multiple bags of ice, refilled once
or twice every few hours.
Athletes traveled from local
towns, in addition to neighboring
states. Two brothers, Stephen
Vassallo, from Maryland, and
Charles Vassallo, from Brooklyn,
traveled to compete in the event.
I wanted to do something be-
fore the end of racing season,
said Stephen. Weve done Spar-
tan [races] before, and Ive started
to gauge when the events arent
challenging. I did some research
and came across this mud run, it
had everything [we] wanted.
The two competitors wanted a
good cause to accompany the
challenge.
The people who run it are
great. Theyre nice, accommodat-
ing and its a good race, said
Charles.
Its not-for-profit, and has a

Burlington County Freeholder
Mary Ann OBrien thanked
Burlington County residents and
businesses for their overwhelm-
ing response to the countys re-
cent food and clothing drive to as-
sist Ocean County residents who
were relocated in temporary shel-
ters in Burlington County after
being displaced by Hurricane
Sandy.
She said that residents should
know that the countys collection
efforts have been brought to a
close, and no further donations of
clothing or personal hygiene
items are necessary.
I cant say enough about the
generosity of Burlington County
residents, said OBrien. We re-
ceived an incredible amount of
clothing and food in just a few
days.
While clothing is no longer
being sought, food can still be
taken directly to local food
pantries, whose shelves are tradi-
tionally in need of replenishing
this time of year.
Our residents really stepped
up and answered the call, said
OBrien. Shortly, those in the
shelters will be moved to more
stable locations, and they will
have more clothing to take with
them.
I know there are other organi-
zations still collecting items for
all the hurricane victims, and I
encourage everyone to support
those efforts.

Mud run more of
an obstacle course
than traditional run
pretty good mission, said
Stephen.
Area residents drove the
short distance to Medford for
their shot to compete in the race,
as well.
The course was awesome. It
was set up great, and a hard chal-
lenge, said Marlton resident,
Bob Allen. This was my second
race, Ive never done one this
hard.
The course was back-to-back
obstacles, according to Mason,
with increasing intensity and
challenge as athletes made their
way through.
We had people out there push-
ing you, and making you account-
able for your actions, said
Mason. At the other mud runs,
theres nobody there [at the obsta-
cles]. There might be a kid point-
ing. I tried to demonstrate, and
have all my volunteers demon-
strate.
The mud run was more of an
obstacle course than a traditional
running event. Athletes ran a
total of one mile between obsta-
cles.
This was an extreme obstacle
event, not a running event, said
Mason.
Overall, though, according to
Mason, it isnt about being the
best, its about finishing the
course and how athletes chal-
lenged themselves.
This is why mud runs are dif-
ferent than marathons, half
marathons or triathlons. These
people arent running against the
clock, theyre just running to see
if they can finish it, said Mason.
You come in here as an individ-
ual or a team member, and come
out as a family.

BC News last month reported
that, since the Transportation
Security Administration was
formed 10 years ago, almost 400 em-
ployees have been fired for allegedly
stealing from passengers.
ABC also talked to a former TSA
worker who claims to have stolen
$800,000 worth of cash and merchan-
dise. He quoted TSA employees as say-
ing: I dont care. They aint paying me.
Theyre treating me wrong.
So, some, by no means all or even
close to a majority, of TSA workers
cant be trusted to keep their hands off
phones, tablets and cash.
We dont want to use too wide of a
brush to paint a picture that TSA em-
ployees are thieves and cant be trust-
ed. In the same ABC report, the TSA
said the number fired represented less
than one-half of 1 percent of those
who have been employed.
But the information leads to one
question: If even only a few TSA em-
ployees are stealing from passengers,
how difficult would it be for a terrorist
group to slip one or two of them a few
bucks to allow who knows what to get
through the security checkpoint?
The nations airport security system
should be changed. If were serious
about deterring terror in the sky, we
have to fix the system. It will cost
money, but it also will give us a much
better, and safer, flying experience.
One only needs to look at Israel to
get some ideas. Now, Israel is a much
smaller country with only a couple of
major airports, so perhaps not every
security tactic it uses can be adapted to
the United States.
But the U.S. can incorporate some
measures. There can be highly trained
personnel on hand to interview pas-
sengers, for example. Give a wrong or
puzzling answer? Get pulled out of line
for more questions.
Lets keep our shoes on, hire the
right people to do the job and finally
get serious about protecting airplanes
from terrorists.

DiEnna, DAndrea re-elected to council
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
Marlton Township Council Republican
candidates Bob DiEnna and Ken DAndrea
were re-elected for a four-year term.
DAndrea received 10,202 votes from Eve-
sham residents, and DiEnna received 9,516
votes.
I feel honored, humbled, and, yet, excit-
ed to be given the opportunity to serve the
residents of this great township, said
DAndrea. To be entrusted with the daily
operations and the future direction of Eve-
sham Township is a tremendous responsi-
bility that I feel fortunate to accept.
DAndrea is heavily involved with Eve-
sham Township. Hes involved with Eve-
sham Celebrations Foundation as a co-
founder and events like a Taste of Eve-
sham, Independence Day Celebration,
Mayors 5k Cup, Bike Evesham, Eveshams
Harvest Fest, Marlton Soccer Commission-
er, Trustee Marlton Recreation Council,
Evesham Township Council, Evesham
Township Planning Board, Evesham Re-
publican County Committee and Saint
Joan of Arc Church, Marlton Sons of Italy.
DiEnna is just as involved in Evesham
Township. He is part of multiple organiza-
tions including, Evesham Township Coun-
cil, Evesham Township Planning Board,
Evesham Republican County Committee,
Evesham Republican Club Volunteer of
the Year, a Marine Corps veteran and a
member of the Marine Corps League. Ad-
ditionally, DiEnna is a multi-state business
co-founder and owner, semi-retired union
carpenter and trustee, licensed realtor, li-
censed pilot and a member St. Joan of Arc
Parish.
Our town has grown from good, to bet-
ter, to great, DiEnna told The Sun in Octo-
ber. Now, we must sustain this beautiful
environment for the young singles, mar-
ried, families, retirees and seniors. My goal
is to preserve Evesham's proud heritage

Next meeting is Nov. 20
while continue to provide excel-
lent services.
The men have already set
goals, moving forward.
I continue to be very passion-
ate about Evesham Township.
The basic premise is to ensure
that Evesham Township remains
a great place to live, DAndrea
told The Sun in October. In sus-
taining that goal, we need to con-
tinue to offer quality municipal
services through cost-effective
means and maintain exceptional
customer service to our residents.
From disciplined spending to
partnerships with townships,
other taxing entities, and the pri-
vate sector to securing grants to a
proactive conviction, I will con-
tinue to bring a perspective of fis-
cal responsibility, a professional
business mindset, and a customer
service ethic in exceeding that
premise.
Both DiEnna and DAndrea
will continue to serve on council
through the calendar year, and on
to their next four-year term.
The next township council
meeting will be held Nov. 20 at
6:30 p.m. at the Evesham Munici-

Everhart, Fisicaro and Stone elected
to serve on Marlton Board of Education
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
The Board of Education con-
tested races for Marlton and
Lenape Regional High School dis-
trict ended with four representa-
tives, respectively.
Trish Everhart was elected,
with 8,434 votes, Joe Fisicaro Jr.,
with 7,186 votes and Kevin Stone,
with 7,186 votes, will represent on
the Marlton Board of education.
Im excited, I feel good. Im
anxious to continue to do what we
were doing for the board and the
district, said Everhart.
The ballots were set up differ-
ently this year, with the addition
of the school board elections
added to the November ballot.
Hopefully the voters saw
through the issues with the ballot
and thats why I won, said Stone.
Im excited and happy.
The candidates were stacked
three to one side, and three to an-
other, with the three listed in both
the Republican and Democratic
columns.
People were going down the
column. We had one person,
Elaine Barbgiovanni, who was no
longer running, win in a few dis-
tricts because of it, said Stone.
Barbgiovanni came out with
6,888 votes in total. She was not
actively running for a spot on the
board, and by the time she want-
ed to pull out of the race, she
could no longer remove her name
from the ballot.
Overall, the candidates are
ready to get to work beginning in
January.
Its going to be hard work, but
the benefit will pay off, said Joe
Fisicaro Jr. Were going to do
great things for the kids and great
things for the community.
We still have agenda items we
need to continue to work on with
this current board. This all hap-
pens and progresses as the board
moves along, said Everhart. Im

Sanferraro wants to promote public
education once the term begins
grateful to be moving into the
next three years, Im that much
more knowledgeable and experi-
enced. Im just really excited to
have this opportunity to continue
doing good for the kids.
Im looking forward to work-
ing with the school board and
helping to make the district bet-
ter, said Stone.
Lenape Regional
High School District
Lenape Regional High School
Districts Marlton candidate,
Joanne Sanferraro, received 7,984
votes to unseat current board
member Barry Fitzgerald.
I was very pleased with the
election results, said Sanferraro.
Last year, I tried running. I just
want to give my service to the dis-
trict.
Sanferraro is a 40-year veteran
of teaching, and has previously
worked within the Marlton
School District.
I wanted to continue working
with the district. I wanted to do it
by working on the school board,
said Sanferraro.
Sanferraro wants to promote
public education once her unex-
pired term begins.
I want to look into shared
services with the local districts
and municipalities. For example,
Cherokee and Marlton Middle
School are next to each other, any
opportunity to share grounds
keeping, snow removal or trash
collection with the Evesham K
through 8 district, or Evesham
municipal government, Sanfer-
raro told The Sun in October.
I have a great deal of pride in
the Lenape district. I want to be a
part of it, Sanferrero said.

of Oct. 22, one of the suspects, age
21, of Philadelphia, Pa. was iden-

On Nov. 7, at 3:21 p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department respond-
ed to a residence in the unit block
of N. Locust Ave for a reported
theft.
The investigation determined
that a male, in his early twenties,
knocked on the victims front
door and identified himself an
employee with the utility compa-
ny. The male advised the home-
owner, an 82-year-old female, that
her water was contaminated. The
female allowed the male to enter
her residence.
Once inside the home, the male
entered the master bedroom and
bathroom. The homeowner grew
suspicious when she heard the
male walking around her bed-
room while the bathroom water
was still running. She then ad-
vised the male to leave the resi-
dence because she didnt feel com-
fortable. The male advised the fe-
male to leave the water running
and he will return later to check
on it.
Once the suspect left the house,
the female discovered that cash
and jewelry were missing from
her bedroom. The suspect fled the
area in a full size white pick-up
truck, the make or registration
could not be determined.
The Evesham Township Mu-
nicipal Utilities Authority was
contacted and it was confirmed
that the suspect did not work for
the Township. All M.U.A trucks
contain visible markings and all
employees wear clothing with
Evesham M.U.A insignias.
On Nov. 8, at 1:30p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department,
through an on-going investiga-
tion into the sale of narcotics exe-
cuted a search warrant at a home
in the 100 block of Main Street,
Marlton. During this search war-
rant execution, marijuana pack-
age for sale and paraphernalia
used in the distribution of nar-
cotics were seized.
The first suspect, age 43, of
Marlton, was charged with
fourth-degree distribution of
marijuana and fourth-degree dis-
tribution of marijuana in a
school zone.
The second suspect, age 41, of
Marlton, was charged with
fourth-degree distribution of
marijuana and fourth-degree dis-
tribution of marijuana in a

Crossroads Programs Tee Off
for Kids golf outing and auction
was held Sept. 13 at Valleybrook
Country Club, and by all ac-
counts, both the day of golf at
Valleybrook and the afternoon ac-
tivities of cocktail hour, dinner,
auction, and awards were enjoyed
by all and deemed a grand suc-
cess.
Great golf scores in the sunny,
80-degree weather were followed
with a thoughtful dinner blessing
from former Philadelphia Eagle
Irving Fryar, who then intro-
duced a touching presentation by
Miracle, a former Crossroads
youth and recent college gradu-
ate.
The event, in its second year,
had 105 golfers a significant in-
crease over last year's 82.
Nearly $30,000 was raised
through sponsorships, over
$10,000 in golfer and dinner regis-
trations, and $17,000 from onsite
contests, auctions, and consign-
ments.
Major sponsors for the event
included CP Rankin Roof Man-
agement and Contracting, Shane
Patrick Associates, DSA CAT
Emergency Restoration, and In-
tegrity Title Agency. Katz/Pierz,
Radwell International, Lima
Company, ABM, Allied Barton,
Reliance Contracting and Reno-
vations, and the Kiwanis Interna-
tional were all key contributors
that added to the financial suc-
cess, along with South Jersey
Magazine as the media sponsor.
The profit from the event was
more than $33,000, a 17 percent in-
crease over last year, so we are
very pleased with the results, and
are grateful for the participation
and support of our corporate
partners, commented Julie Car-
leton, director of Development at
Crossroads.
Crossroads Programs, whose
mission is to empower homeless,
abandoned, abused, and at-risk

Rabid raccoon
Burlington County Health Offi-
cer Holly Cucuzzella advised resi-
dents that a raccoon found in the
vicinity of Kanabe Drive in West-
ampton Township has tested posi-
tive for rabies.
Residents should keep a safe
distance from stray or wild ani-
mals and call their municipality
for Animal Control if a stray or
wild animal is discovered. Resi-
dents should not feed or try to
capture any wildlife or stray ani-
mals.
Cucuzzella warns homeowners
who allow their pets to roam out-
side unattended, to check the sta-
tus of their pets last rabies shot.
A booster shot should be given if
it has been longer than three
years since the last shot, or as
soon as possible if no previous ra-
bies shots were administered. If
your animal has been in a fight
with a wild animal or an animal
of unknown immunization sta-
tus, check with your veterinari-
an.
County Epidemiologist Kristin
Healy said, "Rabies is transmitted
from infected mammals to hu-
mans usually through a bite, but
scratches and saliva contact with
broken skin or mucous mem-
branes are also possible routes to
infection.
Any person who had direct
contact with the raccoon, or other
wild or stray animals in the area
may have been exposed to rabies
and should contact their doctor as
soon as possible.
Rabies is a viral disease that at-
tacks the nervous system and is
fatal in humans without prompt
treatment. The disease is spread
when a rabid animal's saliva con-
tacts another animal or human
through wounds in the skin, typi-
cally a bite.
If bitten, treatment should
begin as soon as possible. Current
