Formal meets funny at annual pageant
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Formal met funny on the night
of Feb. 26 when eight young men
from Cinnaminson High School
competed for the honor of being
crowned Mr. Cinnaminson during
the 39th annual Mr. Cinnaminson
Pageant.
The pageant is a yearly tradi-
tion and fundraiser hosted by Cin-
naminson DECA, the schools
club for students interested in
marketing, management, finance
and entrepreneurship. The pro-
ceeds of the pageant, one of
schools biggest fundraisers, go to-
ward funding the groups trip to a
national DECA conference later
in the year.
Participants in the show are
nominated by their fellow stu-
dents, and after accepting the
honor, the elite eight spend the
weeks leading up to the show
writing funny skits, picking out
memorable casual wear, deciding
upon formal wear and practicing
their routines.
After competing in the nights
three main categories of casual
wear, talent and formal wear, the
list of eight gentlemen was nar-
rowed down to three by a panel of
judges consisting of school facul-
ty. Those three then moved on to
the question and answer segment
for one last chance to persuade

Schools biggest fundraiser. The formal wear was provided by Formal Expressions Tuxedos in Maple Shade, and all participants receive dis-
counts on their prom outfits from the store. The three winners of the pageant also received cash prizes, with one lucky gentleman, Harrison
Ball, receiving the title of Mr. Cinnaminson.

Voters pass fire district
budget with no increase
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
For the sixth consecutive year,
Cinnaminson residents will see
no increase in their taxes to Cin-
naminson Township Fire District
No. 1. Voters passed the budget
during the fire district election on
Feb. 15.
According to the results of the
election, voters passed the budget
105-40. The total budget for 2014 is
$3.33 million, of which $2.74 mil-
lion is raised by taxation.
The largest portion of the
budget, $1.18 million, goes toward
paying the salaries of firefighters
and emergency medical techni-
cians on call at the company 24
hours a day, every day of the year.
Other large potions of the budget
include heath benefits, vehicle
and equipment maintenance, hy-
drant rental and purchasing sup-
plies.
Outside of taxation, the dis-
trict raises any necessary re-
maining funds through grants,
inspection and registration fees,
sales of equipment and surplus
from previous years.
Fire Chief William Kramer
said the district has worked hard
over the years to find ways to
keep taxes stable without cutting
services.
Weve been very fortunate and
successful in obtaining over half
a million in grants and that has
assisted in keeping taxes steady,
Kramer said.
Kramer said many of the funds
for upgrades and purchases have
been from the Assistance to Fire
Fighters Grant awarded annually
by the Federal Emergency Man-
agement Agency.
The goal of the grant is to meet
the firefighting and response
needs of fire departments by
helping firefighters obtain equip-
ment, protective gear, emergency
vehicles, training and other re-
sources needed to protect the pub-
lic.
Kramer said because the
grants are administered by a fed-
eral agency, every application the
department submits has a lot of
competition.
Theyre competitive grants
that we have to work for and com-
pete with other fire departments
throughout the county for,
Kramer said. Sometimes were
successful and sometimes were
not. Weve been incredibly lucky
in justifying our requests.
Within the next few months,
the district will also receive two
new trucks, a pumper and rescue
pumper. Kramer said the trucks
being replaced were nearly two
decades old, and the district was
able to purchase the new trucks
without any tax increase because
of retiring older debt and saving

Harrison Ball named as winner
the judges on who truly deserved
to be crowned Mr. Cinnaminson.
Keeping with the idea of rais-
ing money, a fourth student was
also allowed to move on to the
question and answer segment de-
pending on whom the audience
donated the most money to during
intermission.
Late in the evening when all the
clothes had been worn, all the
skits performed and all the ques-
tions answered, the scores were
totaled and all the votes were
counted.
The packed auditorium was
then introduced to this years Mr.
Cinnaminson, senior Harrison
Ball.
Ball said he loves performing,
and the pageant is one of the
great times he can get to go up on
stage and show everyone what he
can do.
I think its great for the
school, Ball said. You get to see
a lot of these kids you might not
even recognize or know and you
get to see them come and just do
these awesome things and these
hilarious skits and you get to real-
ly see who they really are. I think
its a great idea for the pageant
and a great idea for fundraising.
Ball also had high praise for his
fellow participants, recognizing
that he was up against tough com-
petition.
This year in particular all
their skits were hilarious and well
organized, and theyre all great
guys, Ball said. It must have
been incredibly tough to pick a
winner.
The casual wear potion of the
show saw the young men dress up
as everything from rap stars to
golfers to lederhosen-wearing dog
walkers. The talent showcase fea-
tured comedy skits involving
singing, pianos, dancing, mono-
logues, rollerblading, a news seg-
ment, an extreme cooking show
and even a surprise appearance
by film star Napoleon Dynamite.

The following report comes
from Lt. Tim Young at the Cin-
naminson Police Department:
On Feb. 27 at 7:35 p.m., Cin-
naminson Police received a re-
port of an armed robbery that
had just occurred at the Shell gas
station located at Route 130 North
and Willow Drive.
The attendant was approached
by two males between 5 feet 10
inches tall and 6 feet 2 inches tall,
one wearing a black coat, the
other wearing a black and white
striped coat. Both males were
armed with knives and wearing
ski masks. The suspects demand-
ed that the attendant turn over
his money; the attendant com-
plied. The actors then assaulted
the attendant and brought him
into the office. The suspects con-
tinued to assault the attendant
and ransacked the office looking
for more money.
The suspects then tied up the
attendant and fled with an unde-
termined amount of cash. Re-
sponding officers had to break
through the front door to aide the
attendant. The attendant was
being strangled by the restraints
that the suspects tied tightly
around his throat.
The attendant was transported
to the hospital to be treated for his
injuries. The nature of his in-
juries were not disclosed but they
were not considered life threaten-
ing.
Anyone with information
about his crime are asked to call
the Cinnaminson Police at 829-
6667 x 2041 or to report informa-
tion anonymously to the We Tip
Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
Burlington County Prosecutor
Robert D. Bernardi and Florence
Police Chief Alvin Scully an-
nounced that two Cinnaminson
residents already charged with
several armed robberies have
been charged with holding up the
Town Liquor store last month on
Route 130 South in Florence.
A female, age 28, and a male,
age 28, both of Kelso Lane in Cin-
naminson, were charged on Feb.
18 with armed robbery and con-
spiracy for the Jan. 27 holdup.
The male was also charged with
possession of a weapon for an un-
lawful purpose and another
weapons offense that prohibits
convicted felons from having
firearms.
The investigation revealed that
the male entered the store at ap-
proximately 6:45 p.m., went be-
hind the counter, pointed a hand-
gun at the owner and an employ-
ee and demanded money. The
storeowner and employee moved
away from the cash register and
the male removed the money and
fled in a vehicle that was driven
by the female.
The case will be referred to a
grand jury for indictment. The
duo is already in custody from the
prior armed robbery arrests. Bail
for the male has been set at
$450,000, while the females is
$325,000.
On Feb 7, the male of Kelso
Lane and another male, age 26, of
Georgetown Road in Cinnamin-
son, were arrested for conspiring
to rob the same liquor store. On
that date, after a motor vehicle
stop in the area of Wallace Av-
enue and Seventh Street in Flo-
rence, the males were found to be
in possession of a handgun,
masks, gloves and a small amount
of heroin.
The male of Georgetown Road
is in custody on $325,000 bail. Ad-
ditional charges are anticipated
against the trio from other juris-
dictions. To date, they have been
charged with the following armed
robberies in Burlington County:
Jan. 14, Sunoco, Route 73
South, Maple Shade
Jan. 16, 7-Eleven, Route 73,
Mount Laurel
Jan. 19, Country Farms, Marne
Highway, Hainesport
Jan. 21, Country Farms, Route
73 South, Maple Shade
Jan. 26, Food Mart, Route 130
North, Delran
Jan. 27, Town Liquors, Route
130 South, Florence (Male
Georgetown Road not charged)
Feb. 6, Good Spirits Liquor
Store, Main Street, Maple Shade
(Male Georgetown Road not
charged)
Additionally, in Camden
County, the male and female
from Kelso Lane have been
charged with four armed rob-
beries, while the male of George-
town Road was charged with
three.
The investigation revealed that
the defendants frequently used
the proceeds from the robberies
to buy heroin in Camden.
Agencies working together to
investigate the recent string of
armed robberies include the

INTERIMPUBLISHER
F
or the past few years, Gov.
Christie has been bold and
straightforward with his push
for reform, tax cuts and hope during
his annual state budget address.
Last week, he was anything but.
Instead of painting a rosy picture of
a bright future for New Jersey,
Christie stuck to reality and seemed
to cast a potential dark cloud. If we
dont do something about pensions
soon, well all be paying for it dearly
later, is what he said.
Christies proposed $34.4 billion
budget includes a full payment of $2.25
billion for state workers pensions. But
he said that changes he made to the
pension plan a few years ago arent
doing enough, and said that too much
of New Jerseys spending goes toward
what he called entitlements, a
phrase his opponents, and union lead-
ers, obviously took exception to.
With our long-term obligations
only set to increase in the coming
years, the problem will not go away by
itself, he said. We cannot wish it
away. We cannot make it go away by
magic. What we must do is what we
were sent here to do by the people to
lead and to act decisively again.
Democrats responded by saying that
the pension reforms are working just
fine, and time will prove that every-
thing is A-OK.
Were not so sure that the system
will simply fix itself, but we also dont
necessarily agree with Christie that
more major changes are needed right
now.
What we do agree with is that more
spending cuts need to be made some-
where. The state needs to get out of
debt or at least move closer back to
even and it needs to do so soon.
Local county governments, municipal-
ities and school districts need to share
more services to cut spending without
cutting quality of services and the
state needs to provide these entities
with the ability to do so.
So what to do? Who really knows?
While making more major changes
might be the answer, sitting back and
doing nothing isnt either.
Mixed messages from the Gov.

Mr. Cinnaminson pageant held for 39 years
in Maple Shade, provided the tuxedos the
students wore during the formal exhibi-
tion. Mosca said hes been involved with the
pageant and school for decades, lending out
formal wear for contestants to wear, donat-
ing discount coupons for his store, arrang-
ing fitting days at the school and delivering
prom outfits.
We donate to all the contests in the area
and we do a lot of fashion shows, Mosca
said. Cinnaminson is one of my favorites.
Theyre all my favorites, but Ive been com-
ing here since 1975.
Ziegfield Florist and Gifts of Maple
Shade also provided boutonnires to accent
the formal wear. The pageants coordinator
was DECA advisor and marketing and fi-
nance teacher Christina Jones. She said
this years pageant was the ninth event she
had put together, and after the show, she
was already receiving some high praise
from those in attendance.
I thought it was a great show, Jones
said. It seemed like it grabbed the audi-
ences attention. Ive actually heard that it
was the best show in the last couple of
years.
Jones said this year was the 39th year
the Mr. Cinnaminson pageant was held,
and in her opinion that marks the
pageant as one of the longest and most well
received traditions at Cinnaminson High
School.
As you can see from the audience, its
not just students, Jones said. Its commu-
nity members its people that dont even
have students here at the high school that
come out to see the show. Its a great way to
bring the community together.

MARCH 511, 2014 THE CINNAMINSON SUN 11
Voters re-elect
Smith to board
funds every year.
We space the purchase of ap-
paratuses out over a longer peri-
od, Kramer said Its a hard
thing to do but weve achieved it.
Kramer attributes the districts
ability to purchase new appara-
tuses without raising taxes to
good planning and good manage-
ment from the management team
and board of fire commissioners.
It takes a lot of work to make
something like that happen,
Kramer said. Im very proud of
our people.
Kramer said he expects deliv-
ery of the trucks within the next
month.
They are in the process of
being constructed right now,
Kramer said. We expect delivery
in late March or early April and
then it will be about another
month to outfit them and go
through training.
Kramer also thanks the public
for its support.
Weve had great continued
support from the public, and we
always appreciate that, he said.
Voters also re-elected Harry
Smith III to the Board of Fire
Commissioners with 119 votes.
Smith ran unopposed.
