WELCOME

As a drum line, we pride ourselves on creating an educational atmosphere in which
members are required to perform various styles ranging from ethnic rhythms to Big 10
to drum corps.

We are looking for individuals who are mature, musically intuitive, and technically
proficient. You must be teachable, humble, and dedicated enough to take the time and
energy needed to constantly pursue excellence as an ensemble. Being a Marching
Monarch is a significant commitment, but is extremely rewarding and life-changing as
well. THERE ARE OPENINGS FOR ALL SECTIONS THIS YEAR!!!

What to Bring:

Sti cks
Bring your own snare sticks or tenor mallets.
Only bass drum mallets will be provided for the audition.

Musi c
Be organized. Have all your music neatly in a binder.

ALL INSTRUMENTS ARE PROVIDED FOR AUDITION!!!!!!
Please No cell phones, pagers, blue tooth, iPods or the like in the audition.

What to expect:

The audition will last approximately 10-15 minutes.
It will cover:
1) Rudiments (PASIC 40)
2) Warm Up Exercises
3) ODU Fight Song
4) Victory for ODU
5) Sight Reading

Results will not be given immediately. You will be contacted after all audition dates have

Other important information as you consider participating:
1) Realize being part of a collegiate drum line is a huge commitment and requires
constant practice outside of scheduled rehearsals. The Marching Monarchs schedule is
more limited compared to a high school or drum corps. Individual practice away from
rehearsals is imperative.


2) Because of these requirements, dedication is key to a successful year. You are expected
to be at every camp, rehearsal, sectional, and performance

3) The variety of performances and amount of repertoire requires drum line members to
be competent sight-readers. This is an important part of the audition.

4) Each players overall attitude and work ethic needs to be positive and focused. We will
be evaluating these qualities throughout the audition day as well as your playing abilities.

This is the exercise we use to warm-up the line. Think of it as a mini-performance before rehearsals or shows. There are
several parts to it: legato strokes, accent-tap strokes, double beat-triple beat, stick control, and triplet and sixteenth rolls. We play
all the way through each section without stopping to get physically and mentally strong. It may not look like much, but
you will find that concentrating over such a long period of time is extremely difficult.
Note: The numbers underneath the noteheads indicate each players parts (1-4). We have switched to writing divisi to indicate group A or group B
for splits in 2009. This split for Gumbo was written for the 2008 ODU drumline and uses the older method.
