Sing Along with the Firelands Singers

Thursday August 9 at 4:00
PM
Join us to sing with the residents of the Chalet at the Vineyard on Catawba. You can be a Firelands Singer if you like to sing the old hymns and songs you grew up with. (The quality of your voice doesnt matter nearly as much as the quality of your enthusiasm.) Weve been singing at the Chalet every other Thursday for the last few weeksour August 9 sing-along will feature Fred Hany on trombone and Charlie Garrett on Saxophone.

Reverend Jeanne Gay, Pastor Dr. Jay Mann, Music Director Margaret Mann, Organist William Umlauf, Treasurer Dave Moore, Clerk of Session Karen Crownover, Preschool Director Janine Dress, Administrative Assistant Mark Owen, Custodian

Vespers & Victuals

Mark your calendars now and plan to attend a Sunday evening Vespers & Victuals in the pavilionAugust 19 and September 16. We gather for scriptures, songs, and prayers ... as well as sweet and savory finger foods. (And if youre thinking you really dont want to cook, note the great variety of store boughten foods from the last Vespers & Victuals!) All are welcome!

Saying Goodbye to Jay and Margaret

We dont want them to move away, right? But moving to Colorado Springs is the right move for Jay and Margaret Mann, and we love Jay and Margaret ... so we will wish them Godspeed and pray that they find happiness in Colorado Springs and joy in a new church family there. We also want to say goodbye to them! So ... Sunday, August 26 we will be celebrating Jay and Margarets time with us here at Firelands with a potluck after worship. Therell be speeches and probably singing ... and an ice cream sundae bar. Please sign up on the opportunity table to bring a main dish, vegetable or salad to the potluck (or anything else other than dessert), and if youre willing to help in the kitchen that day, please sign up for that as well. And come prepared to celebrate, to say goodbye, and to hug them one more time.

Pre Order Hymnals: Another Mann Honor?

Weve been pre-ordering the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God, all summer, with 44 currently ordered and paid for. Wouldnt it be great if we could honor our wonderful musicians before they leave by increasing that number to at least 80 of the 100 or more we will need. To order one or more hymnals in honor or memory of someone, please fill out one of the bright pink forms available on the opportunity table or contact Janine in the church office. The price is $20 for one hymnal or $15 each if ordering two or more.

Our Church Family News

Emma Madison (daughter of Lori and John) was married to Joe Higgins on Saturday, July 21, at the Port Clinton Yacht Club. Pastor Jeanne Gay officiated. After a honeymoon trip to Belize, Emma and Joe will return to their home in Bowling Green. New Friends of Firelands Marcia Renaux and Harry Putzbach are to be married at the church on Sunday, August 5. Please congratulate them when you see them. Many thanks to Grace Williams, visiting from Florida, for volunteering to be our acolyte on July 29 and August 5! Congratulations to Lily Stouffer, whose dance group took a second place overall at national competition in Myrtle Beach, and to Nic Stouffer, whose baseball team was undefeated until the championship game. Nic will be marching in his high school band on bass drum this fall. Irene Wilson was in town on July 10. She has moved from her sons home in California to live with her daughter in the Cincinnati area. Katie Heilakka is pleased to announce that she will be starting a new job as Assistant to the Principal at the Toledo School for the Arts at the beginning of August. She is moving to Toledo this week.

Tuskegee Airmen Plane and Exhibit at Airport

Monday, August 9 Thursday, Aug. 12, the Erie Ottawa Regional Airport will host a rare P-51C Mustang, the plane flown by the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II, and the RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit. Our own Harold Brown will be on site each afternoon between 1:00 and 3:00 to talk with visitors and sign autographs. Theres no charge to see the red-tailed Mustang, experience the Traveling Exhibit ... or even to talk with Harold!

Ben Richmond Prints

The Finance Committee is in the process of verifying the list of all the Ben Richmond prints that have been donated to the church over the years. When the complete list is available, with print number, artist proof and suggested prices, we will make the list available to all members. At this point, you should also know that Bill Sharp has a small test sample of Ben Richmond prints posted on eBay, so we will be able to explore selling the prints in this venue as well. The Church Growth Committee Wonders: Whats So Special About Firelands?

The folks who worship together at Firelands Presbyterian Church regularly have an unshakable bond with each other. We are the body of Christ trying to grow in our faith and serve God as best we know how. We are in the process of proving to ourselves and to others that we can worship and work with people that dont think the same way we do, dont look the same way we do, dont sound like we do andwell, you get the idea. Many new members and friends tell us that they felt welcomed into our family when they visited and stayed to join. I think its more than that. There is a palatable sense here of the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. When we become part of this family, we make a commitment to each other as individuals and to this church. This has been especially noticeable lately, as several folks in our congregation have had serious health adventures. Pastor Jeanne and our Pastoral Deacons have been on the road between Cleveland, Port Clinton and Toledo to visit people in hospitals and serve communion to the homebound. The Prayer Chain has been on alert and surrounding people with powerful prayer. Cards and meals have been delivered and people chauffeured to appointments and hospital visits. Sunday morning conversation revolves around catching everyone up to date with news about those on our lift to God list. The bond we have as members of this body of Christ supersedes any differences. We really do care about each other. We share joys and sorrows. Gods love lives here. Do you know people who are looking for Gods love, Christs grace, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit? Invite them to try us out, whether in worship or Bible Study or just to come help with a mission project. Gods love lives here. Its something to celebrate!

Prayer List Changes

Were changing the way we manage our prayer listthe list of people we have been asked to pray for. Previously, the entire list, including new concerns mixed in with ongoing concerns, was printed in the bulletin each week. From now on, we will print the ongoing list in the Trumpet (below) and limit the list in the bulletin to new concerns and those currently in crisis. Here are some details about how all this will work: Current Concerns. When someone goes onto the list in the bulletin, his or her name will remain there for four weeks and then be removed. Current to Ongoing. If you want someone whos been on the Current Concerns list to be included on the Ongoing list in the Trumpet, or if you simply want to put someone on the Ongoing list, you will need to notify Janine Dress in the church office. Current Concern names will not automatically be added to the ongoing list. Prayer Chain. If youve asked to have someone prayed for through the churchs emailed prayer chain, that person will also be added to the Current Concerns list in the bulletin. After four Sundays, his or her name will be removed. Ongoing List Maintenance. We work very hard to keep track of the names on our prayer list. If you have added someone to the list and now feel that he or she can be taken off, please notify Janine.

We have so much fun ! The little ones survived the heat wave with sprinklers, water bottles and popsicles. The covered shelter and the pavilion were a gift indeed!

STATED SESSION MEETING HIGHLIGHTS for July 10, 2012

Devotions: Alison Falls: what the Bible tells us about fear. Report of the Clerk (Dave Moore): Minutes of the July session meeting were reviewed and approved. Treasurers Report (Bill Umlauf): The Treasurers feeling, based on the Balance Sheet, the General Fund Income and Expense Report, and the Preschool Report is that we are currently operating at breakeven. Preschool (Kaye Elliott): The average Preschool attendance for June was between 7 and 15. Of our current 19 preschoolers, 8 will go to Kindergarten and become bus students in the fall. We have signed up three new children who are not starting until the end of August. During the last week of August there will be a Parent Mtg/Open House to explain our program, fees, discipline, and mission. Property/Landscape Management (John McIntosh): As a result of the recently completed Energy Audit, this years electric bill is projected to be $900.00 below the total 2011 bill. Our 2 yard dumpster pickup schedule has been decreased to once every other week and appears to be adequate. A roof leak during a heavy rainstorm has been repaired. The Landscaping group has arranged to have one volunteer the church grounds each week for watering and maintenance. Worship and Music (Connie Brand): So far there have been no takers for our advertised musician job. Deacons (Pastoral): The way the prayer list is generated for the bulletin will be changed soon. The ongoing concerns will be listed in the Trumpet; the bulletin will keep people listed for just four weeks. Report of the Pastor (Jeanne Gay): Jeanne gave a summary of her experience at General Assembly; this will be the basis of her Pastors Page in the Trumpet next month. New Business: Session approved John Madisons request to use the churchs floor buffer and donate the amount he would have paid a rental company to the church. Two building use requests were received, one by the Power Squadron for October 2, 4, 9 and 11, 2012, and the second by Margaret Black to use the Pavilion for a high school graduation party for Bobs and her son Sean for June 8, 2013. Both requests were approved by unanimous vote.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Church Growth (Karen Coffin): The website and Facebook page are receiving frequent updates. The congregational picnic was a big success. It was well attended and we heard many positive remarks about the event, the landscaping and the bird proofing. Many thanks go to the Deacons, John Pugh, Bob Wilson, & Mark Stevenson for working so hard on the preparations. Financial Stewardship (Alison Falls): The Committee unanimously agrees with the Treasurers opinion that we are currently operating at a breakeven and also points out that revenues from ongoing pledges and contributions to the General Fund are under Budget YTD by $3,923.51. In August, Bill Umlauf, Pastor Jeanne and Alison Falls will be preparing a preliminary 2013 Budget for review by the Finance Committee. Presentation to Session will occur in September and to the congregation at the Annual Meeting later in September. Mission (Joyce Jagucki): We continue to prepare and serve a meal to the community surrounding the Church of the Nazarene in Port Clinton on the first Wednesday of each month. The Second Sunday Sack Program has been very helpful in keeping our Food Pantry in needed supplies. We will continue this practice throughout the summer months. The next Mission / Deacons Meeting will take place in early August. At that time we will formulate plans for the coming year. We will also research ideas for fundraising and interest to plan for a team to be trained for the program Living Waters of the World through PC (USA). Nominating Committee (John Madison): Things are progressing pretty much as expected.

Respectfully submitted, Dave Moore, Clerk of Session

Pastors Page: General Assembly: Awesome ... and Sometimes Awful Naked Spirituality Book Study Stepping into the River of Sacredness
June 29July 7 I spent in Pittsburgh, PA as one of 688 commissioners to our churchs 220th General Assembly. To be perfectly frank, though I continue to feel honored to have had the opportunity to go as a commissioner, Im not sure Id want to go again in that role. For its an awesome responsibility commissioners haveto sift through, debate and decide on hundreds of pieces of legislation, in a very short time. And when we got to the 15th hour of deliberations on Friday, almost all of us were feeling a bit on the awful side. The week began in committees, which are assigned randomly. My committee, Evangelical and Interfaith Relations, had no controversial matters to discuss. Rather we had the joy of celebrating anniversaries of other Presbyterian churches around the world (45 years in Cuba, 50 years in Guatemala, 100 years in Korea) and otherwise affirming our relationships with other denominations and religious bodies. The most striking report we heard was from the PC(USA)s mission partner relating to Presbyterian churches in Iraq. There are only five such churches left in the country, only one with ordained pastoral leadership. In one, an elder was kidnapped and killed last year. Another consists of a total of five women, who gather at the church when they canevery few months. Each committee (and some did grapple with difficult and controversial issues) submitted its report to the Assembly as a whole, which began meeting Wednesday afternoon to hear the reports and vote on the necessary issues. Im not going

I invite you this fall to join in a study of a new book, by Brian MacLaren, called Naked Spirituality: A Life with God in 12 Simple Words. MacLaren talks about spirituality in terms of different seasons. Its a beautiful, well-written bookweaving together pithy writing, evocative Scripture, powerful stories, intriguing quotes, enriching poetry, thoughtful song lyrics, and morea book designed for people who want to dive into a deeper, purer, more meaningful spirituality. Heres what the author says in the books preface: This book is about getting naked - not physically, but spiritually. It's about stripping away the symbols and status of public religion - the Sunday-dress version people often call organized religion. And it's about attending to the well-being of the soul clothed only in naked human skin. (ix) Naked Spirituality is focused around twelve meditative words that serve as spiritual practices: here (opening to God's abiding presence), thanks (expanding our sense of gratitude and enoughness), O (soaking up the joy of life and God), sorry (living honestly and transforming wrongs), help (empowering ourselves to ask for help from God and others), please (relying on the support of God and others to get through difficulties), when (aspire after a better life and world), no (allowing ourselves to acknowledge pain, lament about our troubles, and refuse a problematic life and world), why (allowing ourselves

and others to ask God the difficult questions that arise from pain and doubt), behold (mindfully noticing and appreciating the indescribable goodness of God and the world), yes (joining and engaging in the sacred mission of God) , and [...] (enjoying moments of silence and contemplation). We will meet at 7:00 on five Monday evenings, every other week, starting the end of September and ending before Thanksgiving: Sept. 24 (introduction), Oct. 8 and 22, Nov. 5 and 19. If you want to participate, youll need to get your own copy of the book. The hardcover and Kindle versions are available now; the paperback is set to be released Sept. 25. Lets join together this fall to step into what MacLaren calls the river of spirituality: There is a river that runs like a song through this world, a river of sacredness, a river of beauty, a river of reverence and justice and goodness. I know that some people have only rarely seen or barely sensed it. But I also know that you and I are learning to live like green trees along its shore, drawing its vitality into us, and passing it on for the healing of our world. Its waters are clear, refreshingly cool, and clean, and if you care, you can strip naked, dive in, and swim. (237) Whaddaya say? Lets go swimming this fall!

to go through all of the decisions that we madetheres a booklet on the counter outside the sanctuary, called Assembly in Brief 2012, that covers them very well. (If you wont have a chance to pick one up, its also available through this link: http://www.pcusa.org/resource/assemby-brief-220th-general-assembly-2012/.) What I would like to do is to encourage each of you to consider volunteering at the 221st General Assembly, to be held in Detroit in 2014, or at least to going up for a day to observe the proceedings. Its a wonderful chance to watch people from all corners of the churchpastors and elders, presbytery execs, youth, seminary students, missionaries, and morework to be the church together. Sometimes we grumbled and complained, but also we spoke from our hearts, we laughed and we cried, we listened to each other, we sang, we prayed, and we worshipped. Its quite an experience. Sometimes awful ... and all-over awesome.

Social Media?
Which group do you fall in? The call me or send me a letter group? The I can do email group? The Facebook is Fun group? Hows your texting and tweeting? Were learning that we need to be communicating in all sorts of ways, especially if we want to keep up with anyone under 45. So ... Keep checking our Facebook page (with thanks to Pastor Jeanne, Janine Dress and Mary Caracci) and our website (www.firelandschurch.org), which keeps getting better, thanks to Wayne Walter. Were working on Foursquare (ask your grandkids). Is Twitter next? And if youre in the I dont have a clue about any of that and dont care, either group, keep on checking out the bulletin boards around the church. Kay McIntosh does a great job of keeping them up to date, and colorful!

Volunteer Opportunity: Joyful Connections

Do you love children? Do you have a heart for families that have a hard time being families together? Do you have a few extra hours a month? Joyful Connections, a supervised visitation and exchange agency, is looking for dedicated, caring adults to volunteer at the agency. Volunteers supervise visits between non-custodial parents and their children and record their observations. Joyful Connections provides training to all volunteers. The right person for a volunteer position at Joyful Connections will enjoy being around children and their parents and have good writing skills. If you are willing to share your time with children who need a safe place to visit with their parents, please contact Joyful Connections at 567-262-3181, or visit the website at joyfulconnections.com for more information. Joyful Connections is located at 8200 W. St. Rt. 163, Oak Harbor, OH (just west of Riverview Health Care Campus).

What a Doll!
In the 1880s, the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Bucyrus, OH wanted to build a new building, and the Womens Church Society helped raise the money needed by making and selling dolls, dolls that came to be known as Presbyterian Dolls. In 1956 the project was revived, and for around 30 years the women of First Presbyterian in Bucyrus sewed and painted dolls. This summer, Friend of Firelands Gretchen Curtis has gifted the church with one of those dolls, thinking that a Presbyterian Doll ought to go to a Presbyterian Church. Shes a beauty! If youd like to see the doll or have an idea how best to display her, please talk to Pastor Jeanne!

Attention Scrapbookers, Detail Freaks, Photogs, and Historians

In preparing for the 30th anniversary, it became obvious that it would be very helpful for Firelands to have a church historian to compile lists, bulletins, photos, etc. of what we are doing. We dont carry out mission projects for the publicity, but having a record helps retain the past and shape our future. We also need to find a person or two willing to take pictures of special events. If youre interested, please notify Karen Coffin or Pastor Jeanne. (We now have a camera, thanks to Jack Combs. Its in the left-hand drawer under the counter in the church office.
