And the Beat Goes on Membership The LiIeblood oI DKG "Initiate, reinstate, maintain, and energize our membership!" These are the words of our state president and Beta Zeta member Joanne Davis in the FaII Lone Star News. It's a chaIIenge given to each chapter to reach out to prospective new members and invite former members to come back to DKG. Membership in DKG is a gift that keeps on giving in terms of friendships, per- sonaI growth, and opportuni- ties to serve. New members give our organization new energy, vitaIity, and ideas and insure that the organiza- tion wiII remain strong in the future. We are thriIIed to initiate new members in De- cember this year in a cere- mony at the Christmas sociaI on December 5th. It's not too earIy to Iook for more new members to recommend for the coming year. Who can you ask? Let's start with your teaching partner or someone who teaches down the haII, a teacher who is new to your schooI or town, a retired teacher you met through another organization, or someone who is just starting her career and needs us as mentors. Then Iet's think outside the box-what about a nurse educator Iike EIiza- beth Bispo, who has so en- riched our chapter with her knowIedge and voIunteering By Jerrie DooIey spirit? Or a coIIege teacher, a teaching assistant, a schooI administrator, or Iet's not forget the educators who work at one of Fredericks- burg's many private schooIs. Let's take up the chaIIenge and expIore the possibiIities. Bring one or more prospective members to a monthIy meeting begin- ning this month Give the gift of membership in DeIta Kappa Gamma to someone you know.
Nancy Stevens grew up |n the Wh|te kock Lake area of Last Da||as, and p|ay|ng schoo| was one of her favor|te past|mes. As she |m|tated her k|nder- garten teacher mom and |ater her favor|te Lng||sh teachers, she cons|dered ||terature and grammar the "cat's meow." She |oved the honesty and frankness of students and the var|ety |n each day's work. "I a|ways knew that support|ng k|ds and he|p|ng them grow was an extreme|y worthwh||e [ob." Among her favor|te act|v|t|es was gu|d|ng the peer med|ator team who he|ped c|assmates re- so|ve conf||ct s|tuat|ons and fac|||tat|ng an after- schoo| program, "G|r| 1a|k," wh|ch taught g|r|s to be se|f-advocates |n s|tuat|ons they were fac|ng. (Note: 2a|a |s an aunt to Amy C'Ne||---another teacher |n the fam||y and 8eta 2eta's current correspond|ng secretary.) As an educator, 2a|a says her greatest reward was "to |nsp|re or |nst||| a |ove of |earn|ng |nto a ch||d's ||fe or make a ch||d fee| va|ued." She encourages young peop|e to become teachers because "even the most d|ff|cu|t day w||| prov|de a teacher w|th a pos|t|ve exper|ence." She says he|p|ng ch||dren rea||ze the|r dreams |s the u|t|- mate reward for a teacher. 8ecky We|nkauf spent her ch||dhood |n the co|d country of M|nnesota on a |ake |n M|nneapo||s.
