Never Forgotten Honor Flight Receives $5,000 AT&T Grant

Contribution Will Enable Organization to Send 10 World War II Veterans on Flight to Washington, D.C. to See Their War Memorial
WAUSAU, Friday, November 30, 2012 The Never Forgotten Honor Flight today received a $5,000 AT&T Innovation & Investment Award that will help the organization fly more World War II veterans out to Washington, D.C. to see their war memorial. Our goal is simple: to fly as many veterans as we can from the Wausau area to Washington, D.C. to see the war memorials erected in their honor, said Jim Campbell, a co-founder of the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and a retired Marine Lt. Colonel who served during Vietnam. We are grateful for contributions like AT&Ts that will enable us to fly even more veterans out to our nations capital. The Never Forgotten Honor Flight is a Wausau-based organization formed on Veterans Day in 2009. Its mission is to fly area veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War to Washington, D.C. (free of charge) to experience their war memorials. Since 2009, the organization has flown 828 area veterans to our nations capital. Nearly 400 veterans are currently on the Never Forgotten Honor Flights waiting list, including more than 30 WWII veterans. Our veterans have sacrificed so much to defend our country and our freedoms and we are forever grateful for their service, said State Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford), a supporter of the Honor Flights and a former member of Wisconsins 115th Fighter Wing who served three tours in the Middle East. These Honor Flights are a great way to recognize our veterans and enable them to see their war memorials before its too late. About 100 veterans are flown on each of the four flights the organization operates each year. Flights for 2013 are currently scheduled for April 22, May 13, September 9 and October 28. For nearly 100 years, AT&T has remained dedicated to supporting veterans, active military personnel and their families. Every year, the AT&T Wisconsin Pioneers help send off and welcome home WWII veterans who have taken the Wisconsin Honor Flights to Washington, D.C. This year alone, the Pioneers have volunteered over 500 hours for the flights, not only helping to organize and register veterans, but also going on the fights as Guardians for the veterans.

In addition to supporting Honor Flights, AT&T also aggressively recruits and hires hundreds of military veterans every year, and supports organizations like Helping Heroes Homes which provides emergency funds for returning veterans. To qualify for the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, veterans must have served in the military in any capacity during the following time periods: World War II: 12/7/1941 to 12/31/1946 Korean War: 6/25/1950 to 1/31/1955 Vietnam War: 2/28/1961 to 5/7/1975 All veterans must fill out an application to be selected for a flight. Applications can be downloaded off the Never Forgotten Honor Flight website and should be mailed to P.O. Box 5056, Wausau, WI 54402-5056. Veterans can also call 715-573-9496 to request an application mailed to them. All veterans on a flight are accompanied by trained volunteer Guardians who assist veterans throughout the day. Our nations veterans have made tremendous sacrifices for our country, and as a company, we see it as an honor to support them, said Kent Disch, Director of External Affairs for AT&T Wisconsin. While we can never thank them enough, supporting our Honor Flights is the least we can do to recognize their service. The AT&T Wisconsin Innovation & Investment Award program provides grant funding to organizations and programs that improve the community by: advancing education, enhancing the environment, promoting economic development, or delivering other community services. This is the seventh grant this year in a new program aimed at supporting local organizations that enhance and give back to their communities.
