A. Summary of the Lesson Plan This is a lesson plan based on a literacy center dealing with first graders. In groups, the children must go to this center to write short stories that must have a list of spelling/vocabulary words incorporated in them with correct grammatical usage. This literacy center is going to be given around day three and day four when the students have been familiarized with the words for a couple days already. B. Student Population Grade level 1st Skill level below level, on level, above level Grouping small groups based on skill level C. E. Objectives Common Core State Standard L.1.1.a - Print all uppercase and lowercase letters. L.1.2a - Capitalize dates and names of people. L.1.2b - Use end punctuation for sentences. Learning Targets/Knowledge Targets Students must correctly identify and print uppercase and lowercase letters. Students must capitalize the first letter of months and days of the week in a date (e.g., Monday, April). Students must capitalize the first letter of names of people (e.g., Jane Smith). Students must use a period at the end of a declarative sentence. Students must use a period at the end of an imperative sentence. F. Procedure 1. Students will get into their groups based on their intellectual level dealing with the story Space Pup. (above average, average, average, below average) 2. Review basic rules of punctuation and capitalization before the students go to the center. Also ask students to summarize the story Space Pup (students will have read the story prior to completing the center but might need to be refreshed). 3. Once at the center, the students will need to use four to five of these vocabulary words in a short story making sure that the word is being used correctly. 4. For the above average, they will have some high frequency words thrown in the mix to give them more of a challenge. 5. For the average and below average students they will also have some guided help on the poster board just in case they get stuck with a word. (helpers attached) 6. The students will get 15 minutes to write their story. If the work is completed early, students can draw pictures to go along with the story. 7. Once the students are done they will turn it into another folder, that is empty, that says completed work that is attached to the right side of the poster board. G. Assessment Students will be assessed by the stories that they turn in making sure that they used capital letters and punctuation appropriately and that the story makes sense.
