DESIGN CONTEXT...

Kranti is a human rights N.G.O. that endeavours for the empowerment of girls brought up in red-light areas. It provides rehabilitation in a healing home located at Kandivali, where 9 revolutionaries reside with 4 staff members of Kranti. The revolutionaries are mostly teenagers, going to schools or colleges, spending most of the time away from the home. The two-bedroom flat with a large hall and a small library bustles with activities when everybody is home, late in the evening.

Saturday nights are meant for movies that are educative, inspirational.
On sundays, activities like meditation, photography, social justice workshops and outdoor visits keep the girls busy.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION FOR THE LIBRARY

The library for Kranti can be a sustainable entity when it responds to social, economic and spatial concerns, such as having organised spaces, flow of funds for managing it and a healthy interaction with society. If we have a look at the current activity pattern of the house, there is a presence of clashing situations, like study, recreation and interaction happening at the same time. Also, there is lack of provision in case of more number of books being available in the future, or when the use of current books gets over.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO DESIGN A FRIENDLY READING SPACE FOR REVOLUTIONARIES?

Primarily, a space that enhances the existing spatial configuration and gives a flexible, multifunctional and visually inspiring environment. The library as a system should function smoothly with a well- managed inflow of resources, and right channelising of used resources.

The possibility of exchange of benefits between the revolutionaries and the neighbourhood shall add to the sense of social wellbeing.

Paints with low VO.C content ,like idea paints can be used to paint one pane of wall where the girls can scribble their ideas and communicate.
