FOURTH LESSON: Isaiah 11:1-3a, 4a, 6-9 The Peace of Christ is foreshown ANTHEM

Before the Marvel of This Night Before the marvel of this night, adoring, fold your wings and bow, Then tear the sky apart with light and with the news your world endow. Proclaim the birth of Christ and peace, that fear and death and sorrow cease: sing peace, sing gift of peace! Awake the sleeping world with song, this is the day the Lord has made. Assemble here, celestial throng, in royal splendor come arrayed. Give earth a glimpse of heavnly bliss, a teasing taste of what they miss: Sing bliss, sing endless bliss!

The love that we have always known, our constant joy and endless light, Now to the loveless world be shown, now break upon its deathly night. Into one song compress the love that rules the universe above: Sing love, sing God is love!

Lukes Birth Story

Ben Allaway Sing, Angels, Kings, and Folk What did the angels see when they looked down upon this ordinary town? What could a humble village have in store with heavenly legions winging oer? What did the star reveal in the night? A woman in her plight, a husband searching for an open door. What did the oxen see that bade them low? It wasnt time to plough or tow. Who were these strangers huddling from the cold, a mother young, the father old? What simple comfort could they hope to nd to ease her in her time, a mangers warmth, a sleeping lamb to hold. What glorious voices woke the shepherds then in joys cascading cross the heavn? What message brought them running to the town to join the welcome gathring round? Sing alleluia to this King newborn to save the meek and worn, both lamb and shepherd to the lost, the found. How all the angels still take up the song across the world wide and long. The star-anointed path is bright ahead for those who seek the manger bed. Sing, angels, kings, and folk, from town and hill your alleluias still, believe, believe, believe and let the Spirit song be fed. Alleluia, alleluia!
-Ben Allaway

SEVENTH LESSON: Luke 2:8-16 ANTHEM

The shepherds go to the manger

Tracey Ramsey Margo Cooke

Craig Courtney Where Shepherds Lately Knelt Where shepherds lately knelt, and kept the angels word, I come in half belief, a pilgrim strangely stirred; but there is room and welcome there for me. In that unlikely place I nd Him as they said: sweet newborn Babe, how frail! and in a manger bed: a still small Voice to cry one day for me. How should I not have known Isaiah would be there, his prophecies fullled? With pounding heart I stare: a Child, a Son, the Prince of Peace for me. Can I, will I forget how Love was born and burned its way into my heart unasked, unforced, unearned, to die, to live, and not alone for me?
-Jaroslav J. Vajda

ANTHEM

Glenn Rudolph The Dream Isaiah Saw Lions and oxen will sleep in the hay, leopards will join with the lambs as they play, wolves will be pastured with cows in the glade, blood will not darken the earth that God made. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: life redeemed from fang and claw. Peace will pervade more than forest and eld: God will transgure the Violence concealed deep in the heart and in systems of gain, ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: justice purifying law. Nature reordered to match Gods intent, nations obeying the call to repent, all of creation completely restored, lled with the knowledge and love of the Lord. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: knowledge, wisdom, worship, awe. -Tom Troeger
