PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The proposal is a mixed-used building in Christchurchs urban context. The complex will include retail stores, office space, a learning centre and apartment units. The building is located on the north side of the central core of the city, 127 Armagh Street one of the most severely damaged areas after the 2011 earthquakes. Whilst CCDUs blueprint has designated the surrounding area of the site as a new performing art precinct, the purpose of this project is to accommodate the diverse nature of this part of the city and its further growth. Along with two other collaborative team members who each proposed an apartment building and a riverside market, we are aiming to bring a series of programme of work, play and live to this part of the city.

The concept behind the design is based on the research of Christchurch artesian aquifers. The distribution patterns and geological properties of the aquifers offer an immense amount of potential and connections to architectonics; it also puts up a wider scope on the mechanism of liquefaction and other seismic hazard of the Christchurch landscape. The subterranean condition of aquifers is fully formed by different layers connecting; creating a free flowing circulation without destroying the hierarchy of the space. The design literally incorporates the extrapolated geometry of the aquifers, wrapped in a building envelop created by projecting the trajectories of the surrounding buildings and Avon river. Glazings and openings are determined according to functions on various parts of the interior. Sectional patterns of the aquifers also suggested programme for the building. Enclosed volumes are interpreted as residential units, whereas long, open volumes are made into public space. The transition between these levels is integrated by ramps, stairs and level changes of the floor plate, creating a freeflowing circulation.

KAIAPOI RIVER TO KAIRAKI

The North-eastern Line has a rather shallow bore depths and a high amount of water content. his happened probably due to the intersection of Waimakariri River. The water circulation in this section is rather straight forward and more direction.

Performing Arts Precinct

A Performing Arts Precinct is proposed to offer facilities for music and theperforming arts, and to act as a catalystfor recovery. The precinct will embrace different sites and will support co-locationof organisations as far as is possible. The precinct designation will be sufficientto provide for a range of facilities in theevent that the Town Hall cannot berepaired. It will be in close proximity to theConvention Centre, Papa o tkaro/AvonRiver Precinct, hospitality providers and hotels. The Precinct could include a performing arts centre made up of two auditoria of 1,500 and 500 seats respectively, with an appropriately high-quality acoustic environment. It could also provide a permanent home for the Court Theatre, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Music Centre of Christchurch. The location of the Performing Arts Precinct recognises the restoration of the Isaac Theatre Royal in its existing location.

SITE SELECTION
The site choice was made based on the multiplicity of the location. The central city is located to the south, and the residential area on the north, along with the city green belt on the east. Also the site is located in the proposed performing arts precinct. All these create a fusion of programme and qualities to the area, and also opened up possibilities for the programme.

SITE AND THE URBAN TRAJECTORIES

The diagram shows extraction of lines from the surrounding environment of the site such as ourlines of other buildings and tangent of the river to project intersections on the site. By using this method of projecting the urban trajectories to find a suitable building envelope on the proposed site.

BUILDINg ENVELOPES AND AqUIFERS

This matrix shows a series of geometry derived from the urban trajectories. By extruding and distorting these geometry to create three dimensional options. The modifications are made to accomodate circulations between the streets such as the four iterations; and responding to the flow of the river with twist motions such as for the last ones. One important aspect is to apply the concept of aquifers into these building forms
