In this issue were looking at what is sometimes called Original Sin. The main idea of this doctrine is that when Adam sinned in the Garden, we all became guilty through him. In Psalm 51:5 David recognizes and affirms this fact when he writes, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. This definitely sounds unfair, but we have to realize that while we share in Adams guilt even before were not personally guilty, we also share in Christs righteousness even though were not personally innocent! Even more than that, Christ is the one who suffered for our sins even though He didnt share our guilt! One Scripture that addresses this is Romans

During Waldos life in the 12th century the Catholic Church governed the state, and they often murdered people they considered heretics. During this time the Scriptures were only available in Latin, which very few could read, but Peter Waldo was one of the few who could. One evening he was sitting with some friends when one of them suddenly fell over dead! This led him to think of his own death, and his only comfort was in the Holy Scripturesthe way of escape from the wrath which is to come. He wanted so badly to communicate this happiness to others that he quit his job so he could translate the Four Gospels into French. As he became more acquainted with the Scriptures, he began to discover that many doctrines taught by the Catholic Church had no foundation in the word of God and were even condemned by it. Inflamed with zeal, he loudly condemned the arrogance of the pope and the vices of the clergy. He worked hard to show the great difference between the Christianity of the Bible and that of the church of Rome. The archbishop of Lyons heard of it and threatened excommunication and condemnation as an heretic. But Waldo would not be silent, and he had to go into hiding with the help of his friends. When the pope heard of it, he expelled Waldo and his friends from the church and commanded the archbishop to find them. They all had to flee from place to place, but wherever they went they took the gospel with them! During this time more than 130 people were burned alive as punishment for speaking against the Catholic Church. The scenes of martyrdom from the 2nd century were renewed, and multitudes died praising God in the confident hope of a blessed resurrection. 5:19: As by one mans disobedience many were made sinners, so by the

obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Another Scripture is First Corinthians 15:21-22: For since by man came

death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

The doctrine of Original Sin is actually one of great hope for believers. Adam is a type: his one act of disobedience took us far from God. But Christ is the substance of the type: His one act of obedience has brought us near!

Original Sin in the London Baptist Confessions of Faith

LBCF (1689)
1. Although God created man upright and perfect, and gave him a righteous law, which had been unto life had he kept it, and threatened death upon the breach thereof, yet he did not long abide in this honour; Satan using the subtlety of the serpent to subdue Eve, then by her seducing Adam, who, without any compulsion, did willfully transgress the law of their creation, and the command given unto them, in eating the forbidden fruit, which God was pleased, according to his wise and holy counsel to permit, having purposed to order it to his own glory. 2. Our first parents, by this sin, fell from their original righteousness and communion with God, and we in them whereby death came upon all: all becoming dead in sin, and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body. 3. They being the root, and by God's appointment, standing in the room and stead of all mankind, the guilt of the sin was imputed, and corrupted nature conveyed, to all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation, being now conceived in sin, and by nature children of wrath, the servants of sin, the subjects of death, and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal, and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus set them free. 4. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions. 5. The corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are regenerated; and although it be through Christ pardoned and mortified, yet both itself, and the first motions thereof, are truly and properly sin.

Ephesians 2:3 tells us that before Christ gave us life, we were by nature the children of wrath. The Greek word is physis and it means the nature of things and birth or origin. Because of Adams sin each of us is born guiltyby nature children of wrath!

On March 9, 2010, a criminal court in Uzbekistan sentenced 27-year-old Tohar Haydarov

LBCF (1646)
In the beginning God made all things very good; created man after His own image, filled with all meet perfection of nature, and free from all sin; but long he abode not in this honor; Satan using the subtlety of the serpent to seduce first Eve, then by her seducing Adam; who without any compulsion, in eating the forbidden fruit, transgressed the command of God, and fell, whereby death came upon all his posterity; who now are conceived in sin, and by nature the children of wrath, the servants of sin, the subject of death, and other miseries in this world, and for ever, unless the Lord Jesus Christ set them free.

to 10 years in prison for the illegal sale of narcotic or psychotropic substances in large quantities. Members of the Baptist church in Uzbekistan insist that the charges are fabricated and that Haydarovs sentence was punishment for his religious activity. [] They insist that police planted drugs on Haydarov, and church members insist that he is a man with a pure conscience and an honest Christian. Haydarov's appeal was denied. [] Prison authorities recently showed Tohar some of the many letters sent to him, but he is not allowed to read them, because "there are too many citations from the Bible in them." www.prisoneralert.com

As a consequence of the Fall of man, every person born into

the world is morally corrupt, enslaved to sin and is, apart from the grace of God, utterly unable to choose to follow God or choose to turn to Christ in faith for salvation. www.theopedia.com
