Definitions
Cardiac index: The volume of blood pumped by the heart in a unit oftilne divided by
body surface area. It is usually expressed in liter per minute per square lneter.
Cardiac output: Heart Rate tilne stroke volulne of heart.
Decompensation: Failure of the heart to Inail1tain adequate blood circulation, lnarked by
labored breathing, engorged blood vessels, and edelna.
Electrical current: The flow of electrical charge (Q) through a cross-section in a second.
Measured in an1peres (A).
Heart failure: It is a complex clinical syndrolne where the ventricle has impaired ability
to fill witll or eject blood. A condition lnarked by weakness, edema, and shortness of
breath.
Hypertrophy: A nontumerous enlargement of an organ as a reslLlt of increase in the size
rather than the nUlnber of constituent cells.
Olm: A unit of electrical resistance or impedance.
Renlodeling: Left ventricular relnodeling is the process by which the ventricular size,
shape, and ftInction is alter by mecllanical, netIrohormonal, or possible genetic factors.
Systemic vascular resistance: An index of arteriolar constriction throughout the body.
Thoracic fluid content: The total fluid content of the thorax (intravascular, intra-
alveolar and interstitial).
Voltage: The electrical force that causes CtIrrent to in a circuit.
