Theobjectivesandactivitiesofthisprojectare: Objective1:HelppreventthespreadofnewinfectionsofHIV/AIDSandhepatitisC. Activities: Holdaregionalworkshopaboutthehealthrisksofselfpiercingandself tatooing. DeveloppublicserviceannouncementstohelppreventHIV/AIDSand hepatitisC. Objective2:UnderstandwhatlifeislikeforpeopleinfectedwithHIV/AIDSand hepatitisC. Activities: Developanddistributealearningresource. Writeandperformacommunityplay. Theexpectedresultsofthisprojectare: Moreyouthwillknowmoreabouthowtohelppreventthespreadofnew infectionsofHIVandhepatitisC Youthwillbetterunderstandwhatlifeislikeforpeopleinfectedwith HIV/AIDSandhepatitis
Thetoolsthatwillbeusedtomeasuretheresultsoftheprojectincludeworkshop attendanceandevaluations,feedbackfromyouth,teachers,contractorandpartners, andprojectrecordsandfinancialreports. Theprojectwillproduce: AresourceaboutHIV/AIDsandhepatitisC. Aworkshopforyouthaboutsafepracticesforselftattooingandbody piercing. AcommunityplayaboutHIV/AIDSandhepatitisCwrittenandperformed byyouth. PSAannouncementswrittenbyyouthaboutHIV/AIDSandhepatitisC. Theprojectresultswillbedisseminatedthroughawrittenevaluation.Itwillbe giventoallstakeholdersintheproject. Project description Theoverallgoalofthisprojectwillhelpyouthmakegooddecisionsabouttheir health.YouthinourregionareatriskofcontractingHIVandhepatitisCthrough riskyselftattooingandbodypiercing.Youthdonothaveanunderstandingofhow HIVandhepatitisCcanaffecttheirlives.Thisprojectisneededinourregionas moreandmoreyoutharebeingdiagnosedwithHIVandhepatitisCinour communities. Ourtargetaudienceisyouthbetweentheagesof13and15.Ouractivitiesforthis projectare: Holdaregionalworkshopaboutthehealthrisksofselfpiercingandself tattooingandtoteachsafepractices.Wewillbringinahealthworkertodeliver thisworkshopalongwithapersonwhospecializesintattooingandbody piercing.Theworkshopwillbeoneandahalfdayslongandwillbeopento25 participantsfromourcommunityandtheregion.Wewillbringin3youthfrom eachcommunityandwewillhave10youthfromthehostcommunity.Travel andaccommodationwillbeprovidedthroughthisprojecttoyouth.
DeveloppublicserviceannouncementstohelppreventthespreadofHIV/AIDS andhepatitisC.ThePSAswillbewrittenbyyouthinthecommunityandregion whoparticipatedintheworkshop.Thepublicserviceannouncementswillonthe localradiostation.Theywillairthreetimesaweekfor10weeks. CreateacommunityplayaboutHIV/AIDSandhepatitisCandtherisksofself tattooingandbodypiercing.Wehopetoworkwiththelocalcommunitytheatre grouptodevelopanddeliverthisplay.Youthwillbeinvolvedinwritingthe play,actingintheplayandstagemanaging.Thisisagreatwaytoengageyouth developingsomethingpositiveforthecommunity. Developalearningresourceforyouthandteachers,toexplorestoriesandpeople infectedwithHIV/AIDSandHepC.Theresourcewillbegiventoparticipantsin theworkshopandtoteachersintheregion.Theresourcewillhaveinformation, storiesandhandoutsforstudents.Itwillprovideteacherswitharesourcethat canbeusedimmediatelyintheclassroom.
Theschoolwillhosttheworkshopandhelprecruitparticipants,thehealthcentre willprovidesupportandworkshopassistance.Boththesepartnersseehowthis projectbenefitstheirorganizationandthecommunity. Theevaluationoftheprojectwillprovideinformationonthenumberofyouththat attendedtheworkshop,thenumberoftimesthePSAsplayonthelocalradiostation andthenumberofyouthwhohelpedtowritethePSAs.Theevaluationwillalso includetheworkshopevaluationsandtheresourceevaluationsfrombothyouthand teachers.Wewillprovideinformationonthenumberofyouththatparticipateinthe communityplayandhowmuchtimetheyspenddevelopingandproducingthe play.Wehopethattheplayswillbewellattendedandwillreportonthenumberof peoplewhoattend.
Need for the project: Inthepastfewyearsyouthhavestartedtopiercetheirownbodypartsandtattoo themselves.Wehavenoprofessionalsinourcommunitytoprovidetheseservices. Youthneedgoodinformationappropriatetoourcultureandgeographyaboutthe risksinvolvedwiththeseactivitiesandhowtodothemsafely.Youthalsoneedto betterunderstandtheconsequencesofriskybehaviour. Potential partners:CommunityschoolandHealthCentre. Theschoolwillhosttheworkshopandhelprecruitparticipants,thehealthcentre willprovidesupportandworkshopassistance.Boththesepartnersseehowthis projectbenefitstheirorganizationandthecommunity.
