Jason Charles Bourne is a fictional character and the protagonist of a series of novels by Robert Ludlum and subsequent film adaptations. He first appeared in the novel The Bourne Identity, which was adapted for television in 1988. The novel was very loosely adapted in 2002 into a feature film under the same name and starred Matt Damon in the lead role. The character has appeared in nine sequel novels (the last seven were written by Eric Van Lustbader) with the latest published in 2012. Along with the first feature film, The Bourne Identity (2002), Jason Bourne also appears in three sequel movies The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, both with Damon again in the lead role. Jeremy Renner stars in the fourth film of the franchise, The Bourne Legacy, released in August 2012. Damon stated in interviews that he would not do another Bourne film without Paul Greengrass, who had directed the second and third installments.Jason Bourne was a part of a project called Treadstone, where agents were turned into ultimate assassins. He was shot while on a mission and lost his memory, which sets up the background to the first movie. Jason Bourne's memory loss is a form of amnesia, where he forgets his name and much of his past, but retains his kinetic reflexes, which lets him keep using his fighting and other skills that he acquired during his previous life. His difficulties regaining memory are magnified by the fact that prior to the incident when he was shot, his training program and his job had seriously altered his mental state and essentially made him a different person. Memory loss theme persists through each movie with Jason trying, and having difficulty, to remember certain mysterious episodes of his life as an assassin. With Jason being out in the open, many loose ends of things he worked on are left unprotected, and that touches some of the highest circles of power including secret government agencies and criminal organizations who perceive Jason to be a threat to them. Jason, therefore, himself becomes a target of attempted assassinations. The first movie, "Bourne Identity" is based on his memory loss and the agency attempting to bring him in. Not knowing that he had lost his memory, the agency treats him as a rogue agent and attempt to shut him down. The second movie "Bourne Supremacy" sees Jason with his wife Marie, in hiding in India. Unfortunately, he is framed for a murder, and Marie is shot and killed. The second movie then sees Jason track down her killer, while picking up the memory of his first ever kill - which he discovered wasn't sanctioned by the agency. The third movie "Bourne Ultimatum" starts where the second finishes, escaping from Europe and revealing further memories from his past. The movie tracks his chase of the man he believed signed him up to the program that ruined his life, and confronting him at the end.

Robert Langdon is a protagonist and a fictional Harvard University professor of religious iconology and symbology (a fictional field related to the study of historic symbols, which is not methodologically connected to the actual discipline of Semiotics). Robert Langdon was named after John Langdon, a professor of typography at Drexel University who is known for his creation of ambigrams, typographical designs that can be read in multiple ways; for example, and both right sides up and upside down. An example of Langdons ambigrams appeared on the cover of the first edition of Browns novel Angels & Demons. On the acknowledgments page, Brown calls Langdon one of the most ingenious and gifted artists alive who rose brilliantly to my impossible challenge and created the ambigrams for this novel. The character was created by author Dan Brown for the novels and later movies, Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol. Brown has also stated that Langdon will be featured in his 2013 novel Inferno. Tom Hanks portrayed Robert Langdon in the 2006 film adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, reprised the role in the 2009 film adaptation of Angels & Demons, and will play the role again in the film adaptation of The Lost Symbol.
