ARTICLE REVIEW GUIDELINES The main aim of this article review and presentation is so that students will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the topic of choice, thereby broadening their overall understanding of the course. Therefore, in order for students to fully benefit from this exercise, students are expected to be thoughtful in selecting an appropriate article to review as well as in the process of writing and presentation. Plagiarism will not be tolerated as it contradicts with the aims of this exercise. Selection of article: 1. Article must be selected from journals only (either printed or on-line). 2. The topic should be closely related to curriculum and instruction in primary schools. 3. It is important to select an article that you are actually interested in and can understand well enough to write and present about. If you are not clear about what you are reviewing, then it will show in your final work and this will no doubt affect your marks. Writing the review: 1. The review should be between 5 10 pages. 2. A copy of the article should be included with the written review and important points in the article should be highlighted with a highlighter or underlined. 3. Times New Roman or Arial size 12, typed, double-spaced on plain A4 paper. 4. The format should be as follows: Introduction - Introduce the article (mention the author, title and journal details). - Mention briefly what we can expect from this article. Summary - Summarize the findings of the article according to your own understanding and in your own words. - Be as brief as possible but do include the important points. Reflection

2 - Attempt to answer these questions: i. What did you understand from the content of the article? ii. How is the content discussed in the article significant/relevant to you? iii. Can you relate it to past experience? iv. Is it applicable to the Malaysian scenario? v. How you can implement what has been discussed in your classroom? 5. Remember to be critical by giving your own original opinions. 6. Students will be penalized for handing in plagiarised work. Rubrics as follows:
Opinions are justified well and is closely related to the selected topic Good development of ideas Excellent summary of the article (in own words/paraphrased well) Written in a clear, well-organized and easily understandable manner Minimal grammatical errors Neat general appearance and organization of report (according to format & highlights important points) Opinions could be better elaborated/justified and is somewhat related to the selected topic Some ideas are underdeveloped but generally good Good summary of the article Style of writing is acceptable but can be unclear in some parts Considerable grammatical errors General appearance and organization of report is acceptable Opinions lack justification and may stray from the main ideas of the selected topic Many ideas are underdeveloped Mediocre summary of the article (does not paraphrase much/at all) Style of writing is acceptable but can be unclear in some parts Many grammatical errors General appearance and organization of report is acceptable
