Presence: Time with Those We Love by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

My brother John sent this to me last week. It's powerful and true. I hope he wasn't trying to tell me something. -------------------------------------------------------------------------SON: "Daddy, may I ask you a question?" DAD: "Yeah sure, what is it?" SON: "Daddy, how much do you make an hour?" DAD: "That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?" SON: "I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?" DAD: "If you must know, I make $100 an hour." SON: "Oh! (With his head down). SON: "Daddy, may I please borrow $50?" The father was furious. DAD: "If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed! Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day and I expect much more out of you than this childish behavior." The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $50 and he really didn't ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door. DAD: "Are you asleep, son?" SON: "No daddy, I'm awake." DAD: "I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier. It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $50 you asked for." The little boy sat straight up, smiling. SON: "Oh, thank you daddy!" Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father. DAD: "Why do you want more money if you already have some?"

SON: "Because I didn't have enough, but now I do. Daddy, I have $100 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you." The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness. It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $100 worth of your time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family and friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives. And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than to our family. -------------------------------------------------------------------------Life moves very quickly. Children grow up fast. We should do everything we can to spend time with and be present for those that we love the most!

2013 Focus Areas - Part II - Presence by Rev. Trey Flowers, Minister of Children & "The Bridge"
the people who spend time with our little ones that helps them to understand God. Yes, churches are made by the people who show up! Woodmont Christian Church is not made up of bricks and mortar. It is made up of the people who bring their presence in so many ways both on Sunday and every other day of the week. We are called not only to be present physically, but also to be present spiritually and emotionally for each other. In short, by offering our presence, we are really offering the best of ourselves to each other. This is what makes us Woodmont Christian Church.

Remember our three "focus areas" for 2013? Prayer Presence Peace I wonder if the average new person who walked into our worship services any given Sunday could figure out that these are the three things our church is most focused on this year. To be the heart of our congregation in 2013, we should not only memorize these three words but also live them out in our day-today lives. Continuing the series on each of these three areas, I would like to lift up the second virtue in particular: presence.

A leader once said that "history is made by the people who show up." This certainly proves to be true at the ballot box and During these forty holy days of Lent, here are a few of the many political rallies, but I think the sentiment runs deeper than that. ways we can practice presence: Perhaps homes are made by the mothers and fathers who show Commit to being present in worship every Sunday between up to love. Schools are made by the teachers and children who now and Easter show up to learn. Communities are made by the neighbors who Take time each morning before beginning your day to listen show up to help each other. for Gods presence in your life (in silence or by reading scripture) So too are churches made by the men, women, and children who show up. People are the lifeblood of any congregation. Be Gods presence to someone in our church by delivering a meal to someone in the hospital or with a new baby One of the things we hear most often from new visitors is how friendly our congregation is. There are no signs or structures Give a small present of gratitude to a local teacher who is that could make someone feel that way; they feel this way making a difference in our community because of the people who greet them with a smile and wrap Honor the presence of those around you by offering a them up in the loving arms of our community. No matter how compliment to a different person every day of Lent. many nails, hammers, or dollars are donated, the Habitat house cannot be built without people who show up. Even if we have the greatest VBS curriculum and decorations in the world, it is

The Older Brother by Carla Schooler, Minister of Jr. High Youth

When others ask me about coming to know Jesus as Savior, they are always looking for that moment of conversion. Sometimes they seek a story rooted in hard times, heartache, or a "hitting rock bottom" experience. Knowing that I was raised by a pastor father and devoted Christian mother they are simply seeking a Prodigal Son story. My story, however, is much more of an Older Brother journey. For me, Jesus is like an old friend. He's the kind of friend that you don't really remember meeting but you know has always been there. And life without that dear friend wouldn't really be a full life. However, this has led to some Older Brother moments for me. getting the attention I often desired. If you asked my mom today she would be glad to tell you how "easy" I was as a teen and how she never had to worry about me. I look back now on that time with a sense of accomplishment but that doesn't mean it was easy. Isn't that the Older Brother? When his younger brother returns after wasting his money and living on the streets his dad throws a party! Understandably the Older Brother is a little annoyed, after all, he was "easy." He was always there, working away, never causing trouble and ever obedient. Why should his irresponsible little brother get a party?

Just like I had as a teen, the Older Brother also had the love and approval of his father. The abundance that he enjoyed on a During my teen years there were times when a family daily basis was his constant party! May we all live our lives as a member or friend was getting a lot of attention because of poor constant party enjoying the love and approval of our loving God! choices made. Even though much of that attention was negative it was still attention. In my teen years attention and approval ~Carla were so important and that made it hard to watch others always

Laken "Red" Warnock - A Memory

After discussion among several of your Elders and some of the Ministerial staff, it was believed both fitting and appropriate that this information, limited and incomplete as it of necessity must be, should be shared. Red's life can be understood, at least somewhat, as represented by several major influences: Love of and pride in family - his wife, Nelta, his son, Tim, and his daughter, JoAnna Devotion to learning and scholarship - Portsmouth, Ohio High School, Milligan College (BS), Vanderbilt University (PhD) - and a professional lifetime of teaching biochemistry at Vanderbilt at both undergraduate and graduate levels Major health issues - typhoid fever - being quarantined for two years from school and playmates; multiple skin cancers and finally, renal failure A keen sensitivity for the arts - as an American Rose Society judge - as an accomplished leaded/stained glass artist, evidenced by the lovely stained glass window hanging in Woodmont's library, a memorial honoring his wife, Nelta, after her long and tedious battles with cancer His unselfish devotion to Woodmont's Troop #92, serving as Scoutmaster and troop leader, for which leadership he was awarded the prestigious "Long Rifle Award" A "natural" athletic ability with a multi-year All Conference college baseball career In 1976, Red was recognized by Woodmont Christian Church as a "Layman of the Year." We hope that these words serve to trigger your own memories of Red. Thank you, Gene Regen
