1 Corinthians 6:12-20 (Epistle)

12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13 Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 And God both raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For the two, He says, shall become one flesh. 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are Gods.

Luke 15:11-32 (Gospel)

11 Then He said: A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 But when he came to himself, he said, How many of my fathers hired servants have bread enough and to

spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. And they began to be merry. Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf. But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. So he answered and said to his father, Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him. And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.

ON-GOING PARISH PROJECTS

.

120TH ANNIVERSARY SST. PETER & PAUL ORTHODOX CHURCH - 2014

Our parish is quickly approaching the 120th Anniversary - 120 years of hard work and heroic accomplishments by our predecessors and founders. Please contact the Fr. Vlad if you are interested in supporting this project.

YALE RUSSIAN CHORUS Hosts are needed who can provide accommodations for members of the Chorus during their stay in Buffalo. If you have a spare room and can help with transportation for a member of the chorus during the concert on the evening of Tuesday, March 12, 2013, please contact Fr. Vlad to make arrangements. Also, any donations of baked goods for the refreshment hour after the concert would be greatly appreciated..

SATURDAY SOUP KITCHEN MISSION The Soup Kitchen continues to serve neighbors in the community in need. We serve approximately 25-30 guests each week with a hot meal, community and friendship. We are so grateful to Matushka Jeanne for her support of this project. She tirelessly spends each Friday buying the food for the meal and preparing it, and each Saturday making and serving the lunch. Also, special thanks to Ed Fenn, from St. Georges who volunteers each week at the Kitchen. Without them, this project would not succeed. However, although the need continues, our resources are spreading thin. We have not been able to secure a grant to underwrite the cost of the food. The Council also believes that the kitchen may be needed for other Church-related projects on Saturdays. Therefore, the Council has determined that the Saturday Hot Meal will be offered to the community on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month so that the Hall can be used for church-related events on the alternate weeks. Please consider supporting the Hot Lunch program during these weeks volunteers would be appreciated both on Friday night preparation and on Saturday morning meals.

This Weeks Reflection: from ORTHODOX CHURCH OF AMERICA PREPARATION FOR GREAT LENT The Sunday of the Last Judgment or Meatfare Sunday is the third Sunday using the Lenten Triodion, the liturgical book used in the services of Great Lent. It is the Sunday after the Sunday of the Prodigal Son and Sunday before Forgiveness Sunday. This is the third week of the pre-Lenten start of the Easter cycle of worship in the Orthodox Church. Next Sunday is called Meatfare Sunday since it is traditionally the last day before Easter for eating meat. Orthodox Christians observe a fast from meat all week, but still eat dairy products and eggs till the start of Great Lent. The Orthodox rules for lenten fasting are the monastic rules. No meat is allowed after Meatfare Sunday, and no eggs or dairy products after Cheesefare Sunday. These rules exist not as a Pharisaic burden too hard to bear (Lk 11:46), but as an ideal to be striven for; not as an end in themselves, but as a means to spiritual perfection crowned in love. The lenten services themselves continually remind us of this. Generally speaking, fasting is an essential element of the Christian Life. Christ fasted and taught men to fast. Blessed fasting is done in secret, without ostentation or accusation of others (Mt 6:16; Rom 14). It has as its goal the purification of our lives, the liberation of our souls and bodies from sin, the strengthening of our human powers of love for God and man, the enlightening of our entire being for communion with the Blessed Trinity.
