Español I: Quotes from student journals on The Circuit

1. “While so many other families are blessed, Panchito’s family

struggles and struggles.”

2. “I saw how they rely on their family for support and how close they
are to each other.”

3. “[Panchito] was so young, and when he should have been playing

and being a kid, he grew up fast and had to work.”

4. This book shows us that Panchito and his family have a very strong
base in their religion.

5. I think this is a good thing to read so we can all learn not to be so

selfish or take things for granted that other people don’t have and
who are less fortunate.

6. When they arrived at their new site, they pretty much had to clean
out the entire garage that they were staying in because it was a
complete mess…and just cleaned it and went to sleep.

7. Through everything that has been going on [Panchito] has kept a

positive attitude, and has showed few weaknesses.

8. The parrot may symbolize a migrant family just like the fish in the
puddles. They are caged and have a hard time getting out of their
cage which could be financial. Just like the fish some do not
succeed. Papá killed the bird just like how some migrant workers
fail.

Español I: Reflections on reading The Circuit

A thought from la Sra. Bagnall:

I have enjoyed reading The Circuit and I hope you have too. It
has taught me/reminded me of some things:
• Migrant workers are hardworking and dedicated to their work
& family
• Migrant workers are made in the image of God and should be
treated with dignity.
• We need to respect ALL people, including those outside of our
social status
• God has abundantly blessed us with material wealth and we
can be witnesses for Him by living gratefully, by not
complaining as much as we do, and by not taking for granted
that our daily needs (and many desires) are met
• The ease and convenience of eating a majority of our foods
everyday is due to the hard work ethic of thousands of
migrant workers!

It has been a joy to read your journal reflections . I have appreciated

the way many of you shared sincerely and thoughtfully what you
learned, observed and thought about while you read. As we conclude
our unit on The Circuit, I would like you to think about the book as a
whole and reflect on the following statements [they are actual quotes
from student journals]. Each statement focuses on a different
aspect/theme of Panchito’s family and their experiences as a migrant
family.

For each statement, write at least a 100 word response in support of

each statement based on what you read in The Circuit. Include at least
2 specific examples (include the page # in parenthesis) from the book
to support each statement.

You MUST do part A:

A. “While so many other families are blessed, Panchito’s family
struggles and struggles.”

This response should have 2 parts:

1) Reflect on how YOUR family is blessed. Be sincere and
include some specific examples
2) Give examples of the struggles facing Panchito’s family and
include at least 2 specific examples with page numbers.
For part B, choose ONE/TWO of the following four options. Be sure to
include 2 specific examples from the book with page #’s.

B.
#2  “I saw how they rely on their family for support and how close
they are to
each other”

#3  “Panchito was so young, and when he should have been playing

and
being a kid, he grew up fast and had to work.”

#4  “This book shows us that Panchito and his family have a very
strong base
in their religion.”

#5  “In Panchito’s family, the children have more respect for their
parents
than a lot of people in my culture.”
