Students Task Sheet: Pictures: 3A: The Battle of Hastings (1066) where Duke William II of Normandy (later to be called William the Conqueror) defeated the army of the Anglo-Saxon King Harold II; the beginning of Norman rule in England and French influence on the language 3B: Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) English political and military leader who overthrew the English monarchy and temporarily turned England into a republican Commonwealth. Later he claimed the title Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland. 3C: Second World War (1939-45) Britain was fighting Germany alone, after the defeat of France, until 22 June 1941 when Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. Britain became part of the Allies alongside the USA and the Soviet Union. 3D: Elizabeth I (1533 1603) was queen regnant of England and Ireland from 1558 until her death. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Elizabeth's reign is known as the Elizabethan era.
