American History

Task (5 mins.) In Part Three you are going to speak on your own about American history using pictures 3A3F. Look at the pictures, identify at least three of the historical events / personalities / eras and talk about them at length. Pictures 3A: Sitting Bull (1831-1890) also nicknamed Slow was a Lakota Sioux holy man who led his people as a tribal chief during years of resistance to United States government policies. He led numerous war parties against American forces and refused a peaceful settlement. 3B: The American Civil War (1861-1865) was a civil war fought between 25 northern federal states (the Union) and 11 southern slave states (the Confederacy). President Abraham Lincoln campaigned against slavery, which led to forming the Confederacy. The Union won and slavery was abolished. 3C: President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) leader of the Progressive Movement (reform dealing with modernisation, environmentalism and social justice). In 1918 he issued his Fourteen Points, his view of a post-war world that could avoid another conflict. He helped to create the League of Nations and shaped the Treaty of Versailles 3D: The hippie subculture developed as a youth movement that began in the United States during the early 1960s. Their ideas of harmony with nature, communal living, artistic experimentation and use of drugs spread around the world. 3E: September 11 attacks (September 11, 2001) a series of four coordinated suicide attacks upon the USA in New York City and Washington D.C. 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passengers jets and intentionally crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and into the Pentagon. 3F: War in Iraq began on March 20, 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by the USA (Bush) and the UK (Tony Blair). The invasion eventually led to the capture of President Saddam Hussein who was later executed. On October 21, 2011, President Obama announced that all U.S. troops and trainers would leave Iraq by the end of the year, bringing the U.S. mission in Iraq to an end.
