MARCH 2013

Victorian Climate Bootcamp

From the 15th to the 17th of February, 30 passionate young people came together...
After arriving at Clifford Scout Activity Center on a ttingly scorching day, and partaking in plenty of wonderful getting-toknow-you activities through which we learnt vital information about one another (which limb would you rather lose; a leg or an arm?), about 30 volunteers, both new and old, commenced a fun-lled weekend of trainings and activities. We were taught basic climate science and introduced to the values and theory of change of AYCC, and later - after a leisurely swim in the Yarra - we were given skills with which to communicate the climate change and the campaign to other willing (and potentially not-so-willing) listeners. The unveiling of the years campaign - Climate Game Change - left everyone excited, motivated and enthusiastic to roll out the campaign in O-Weeks across the state, wrapping up an inspiring weekend of training in climate action!

CLIMATE GAME CHANGE

2013

In 2013 our decision makers are planing to approve a massive expansion of the coal industry and if we let that happen, it's game over for the climate. We need the key players in politics and business to play by a new set of rules - rules that invest in renewables and protect the future. It's time to change the game - whether we do is up to us.

AYCC AT O-WEEKS
AYCC had stalls at over seven university campuses throughout OWeek, reaching hundreds of students and getting thousands of hours of their time pledged for a super exciting and worthy cause. Vic vollie Kayla Wilson was one of the dedicated team helping out on stalls at various universities: O-Week with AYCC was an absolute joy to be a part of. I first volunteered at ACU, where to start I was shy and a little apprehensive about talking to students about climate change and becoming game changers. I soon found that many of the people I spoke to shared in the concern, hopefulness and generosity that I felt about making changes for a better future, and so I grew confident and ended up having some really great conversations. At La Trobe and Deakin my team and I had blue cupcakes, a Dr. Seuss photo-stand and bubbles at our stall, which I believe made us stand out as fun and friendly (which we totally are). At each uni we exceeded our goal amount of pledges and had plenty of people sign up to be AYCC members. The highlights of O-Week for me include Saskwatch pledging hours to the campaign, all of the complements for the Dr. Seuss fish, making plans to collaborate with the Greens at Deakin and being filmed by Microsoft blowing bubbles in my AYCC shirt.

also got to meet some friendly chaps from LEAF (La Trobe Environmental Action Forum). The whole day was a very exciting launch into the possibilties for AYCC in this election year. I look forward to being a part of an AYCC group at both La Trobe University and the Castlemaine and Bendigo areas.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Climate Game Change Forums:

On the 26th and 27th of March, AYCC will be holding two forums at Monash Uni and Melbourne Uni (respectively). It will involve an in-depth explanation about this years exciting new campaign by the people who know most about it, as well as more information about the coal expansion in Queensland and along the Great Barrier Reef. Plus, it will be a fantastic opportunity to learn how you can get more involved with AYCC Victoria this year! Melbourne Uni will be hosting keynote speaker Prof. Robyn Eckersley, an acclaimed environmental politics lecturer at the university, while Peter Christoff will be speaking at Monash. Details:

Chris Allan
Chris has been involved with AYCC since Powershift 2009. This year he went on Vic Training Camp and helped out at a heap of O-Week stalls, including both Melbourne Uni and Monash! He will also be taking part in AYCCs Climb it for Climate, where hell trek to Mount Everest base camp in September to raise money and awareness for AYCC and and work on a local climate change project with a Nepali Community. Last week he hosted a James Bond Movie Night as a fundraiser; a big success with delicious Casino-Royale-themed cupcakes and martinis. ...and Bonnie Wills tells of her experience at Latrobe University, in Bendigo: Setting up the stall and working with the other members of AYCC at the O'week of La Trobe in Bendigo was my first opportunity to turn my concern for Australia's environment into positive action. I got to meet some great folk on the day. There were new students, current students and I even got to have a chat with the local Labour Candidate, Lisa Chesters. I
