Pat Martino, A True Jazz Legend

Pat Martino, who was born in Philadelphia, is a true jazz legend. He began his professional career at age 15 after moving to New York City. He played with many great jazz musicians and made many recordings as a band member. An icon before his eighteenth birthday, Martino began touring as a leader in 1967 and signed for Prestige Records when he was twenty. In 1980, Martino underwent brain surgery for a nearly fatal aneurysm. After surgery he lost some memory of the guitar and his musical career. He recovered and learned to play the guitar again with the help of friends, computers, and his old recordings. He returned to his career in 1987. Among his awards Martino was named 2004 Guitar Player of the Year, Downbeat Magazine's 2004 Reader's Poll. His European tour this summer includes stops in Barcelona, Paris, London and other major European cities.

Fifteen Years of Jazz at the Point

The Somers Point Jazz Festival started in 1998 as a small Sunday event featuring jazz performances at three local restaurants. It was originally organized as a fund raising event for the Somers Point Foundation for Education, a nonprot support group for the local public schools. It was one of many such special events held during the year. In 2000 with the help of members of the local jazz community and corporate sponsorship from Cape Bank, Shore Medical Center, and others it transformed itself into a threeday event that featured both evening and afternoon performances. In 2004 the event became the signature event for the newly formed Somers Point Jazz Society. At that point it grew into a fourday event that featured some of the best-known jazz musicians both locally and nationally. Some of the artists that have appear at this event included: Mulgrew Miller, Earl May, Conrad Herwig, Richie Cole, Jimmy Bruno, Paul Bollenbeck, Jimmy Cobb, Eric Alexander, Vincent Herring, Howard Alden, The Caribbean Jazz Project, Marlon Simon, Jeannie Bryson, and many more. The Somers Point Jazz Society is proud to be an active partner in making our community a better place to live. We have donated nearly $30,000 to support the music and arts program in our local public schools. We have been active in presenting jazz education programs through out South Jersey, and we have supported local special events such as Bayfest, Good Old Days, the Shore Medical Center Building Campaign, Summer Concert on the Beach Series and others.

GEORGE MESTERHAZY BIOGRAPHY

Mesterhazy arrived in the United States in 1958 after his family ed communist rule in Hungary. After a sponsor in the United States agreed to take in the family, the Mesterhazys settled in a Hungarian community in Schenectady, N.Y. The parents were singers, and George showed musical ability at an early age. He took up accordion and violin for Hungarians, thats almost a requirement then trumpet, organ and guitar. By junior high school he and his older brother were leading rock bands. ! By high school, the family had moved to Atlantic City, N.J., and Mesterhazy quickly got a job playing piano in the house band at the Strand Hotel, which became the Golden Nugget and is now the Atlantic Club Casino. Young George learned all his instruments by teaching himself, or by osmosis, he says. It was hanging out with all these artists ... Wild Bill Davis, Richard Groove Holmes, Gene Ammons, Pat Martino. The amiable teenager befriended all of them. Nominated for a Grammy for his arranging work on 1997s Loving You, with Shirley Horn (on which he also played). After switching to piano and becoming a professional musician, he relocated to Los Angeles, but eventually became well known in the area of Cape May, N.J. He also played with Les Paul, Bernadette Peters and others. Mesterhazy also ran the jazz piano program at Rowan University, taught privately and managed Cape Mays Merion Inn. PAGE 3
